In need of recos within walking distance of San Jose Arena

Stroll around San Pedro Square and inside the new San Pedro Square Marketplace and you will find lots of casual and good choices. Also, Paesanos and Henry's Hi-Life.

Wine Corks

Whole Foods in our area (San Jose, CA) recycles them. You could also post an offering on your local freecycle.org or craiglist - I guarantee a local artist or school teacher will want them.

Best Example from San Jose/South Bay not availble in SF

Vung Tau, downtown San Jose, for Vietnamese.
Outstanding Ethiopian: Cafe Rehoboth near downtown (in Japantown), or Zeni further south but still in San Jose.

Corporate dining in San Jose that's not on Santana Row?

Agreed! (Original Joe's is definitely not special, in my opinion.) I vote for Arcadia for this situation.

Need recommendation - Italian in the South Bay

Paesanos, on W. Julian in San Jose. Excellent pastas, very experienced Sicilian owner-chef.

Is there such a thing as "beef bacon"?

I assume in this case it means Greater Toronto Area.

Recommendations: San Jose?

Vung Tau, highly regarded, Vietnamese. Downtown, on E. Santa Clara St.

Cafe Rehoboth, mom and pop Ethiopian in Japantown

Nazca, Peruvian, downtown on San Fernando St.

These are NOT "high end" places, but the food is top-notch and interesting!

Please review SFO dining list for NYC Foodie (Researched)!!

Re the Peruvian recommendations: Nazca is pricier and more upscale, Isabella very modest and like home cooking...Anyway, Nazca doesn't serve lunch, but Isabella's does.

Good Peruvian in San Jose: Nazca, and Isabella's

Good baked goods AND good coffee, Southbay-- impossible?

Oh my, yes, the morning buns. Does the coffee satisfy?

Good baked goods AND good coffee, Southbay-- impossible?

Have you tried Flower Flour in Willow Glen? Tiny place, serious about pastry and as I recall the coffee was good.

Brazilian Restaurant in Bay Area?

I haven't been there, but in downtown San Jose:
Maceio Brazilian Steakhouse, 72 South 1st St.

Romantic restaurant in San Jose?

So sorry....71 Saint Peter is the one that was so disappointing, outright lousy food. Such a shame because the space and location are excellent.

Romantic restaurant in San Jose?

We had a terrible meal there about two months ago. Cheesy music in the background, tasteless and overpriced food. Really really has gone downhill in my opinion. I used to like this place....

Romantic restaurant in San Jose?

Paolos would be good. It's high end and walking distance (several blocks) from the Fairmont.
Papillon is not downtown, not close to their hotel.
I love the new Italian place, Paesano. It's in a remodeled Victorian and would be about a 15-minute walk from the hotel.

ISO Good Eats in the Downtown San Jose Area

-Picassos Tapas on E. Santa Clara St.
-New (and great!) Italian: Paesanos (W. Julian)
-Vung Tau on E. Santa Clara (Vietnamese)
-Naglee Park Garage: Food has been good and more consistent lately, but not a great wine list and can often be crazy-crowded
-Paolos has a good wine list/cocktail situation

Cosentinos Market, San Jose- Closing!

Based on what employees told me today at Cosentino's:
A deal was closed with Lunardi's. The store will stay open as Cosentino's through Feb 26 (they are re-stocking shelves), and will re-open as Lundardi's March 1. The deal included the provision that any employee who wants to stay, stays. This means that kitchen and bakery staff may stay the same, let alone meat and produce depts. Also, Lundardi's knows it is inheriting a fiercely loyal customer base, and will likely listen to customers' requests for items they are counting on.
Staff seemed really happy about this outcome.

Recommendations for Dinner in San Jose- 8 people

Paolos in downtown SJ is upscale Italian - classy.

Moroccos, also in downtown, might be suitable since you say it's an adventurous group. It's a modest setting but serious Moroccan food and they really aim to please.
They often have live music, too.

And there's Michael Mina's Arcadia (upscale steak etc) in the downtown Marriott.

Cosentinos Market, San Jose- Closing!

I completely understand, Claudette. I am devastated. Thanks for the response, and thank you for the link, wolfe.

Bayonne, SJ, closed

It is completely empty. This is a real disappointment (especially finding it out the same day as I learned of Cosentino's closing). Does anyone know more about what happened with Bayonne?

Cosentinos Market, San Jose- Closing!

This is such a loss. I have become completely dependent on Cosentino's for my produce and meat.
Is there any place else in the area (other than the Farmers Markets) where I can get comparable produce?

Absentee Chefs

Well-said. Furthermore, one of the signs of a great chef is that he trains his staff superbly. So the better the chef, the less important his presence.

Thanks for all the Victoria recommendations.

We are drawing to the close of another great trip to Victoria, highlighted by some fabulous meals thanks to Victoria Hounds.

The Superior remains our special place. Delicious, creative small plates and live music.

We finally made it to Zambri and were as impressed as we'd hoped to be.

Stage was great. The fact that we benefited from the Sunday evening discounts was a bonus.

We expected to enjoy Fol Epi, but were surprised by the wonderful coffee at Cafe Fantastico next door. My husband feels it is a destination cafe!

Again, thanks so much to all who have contributed to our appreciation of this wonderful city.

Client Dinner in San Jose - Suggestions?

Your info may be more current than mine. Thanks. So OP, take that 71 Saint Peter recommendation under advisement. But recent reports of Paolo's suggest it could be great for an upscale business dinner...
