Blue Bell ice cream now in Raleigh/Cary

I'm with you on the HFCS. It would be easier to cut gas prices in half than to get that stuff out of our food unfortunately. Just have to pick your battles (there is even corn by-product in our gas - Ethanol)

Blue Bell ice cream now in Raleigh/Cary

Jesco,

Blue Bell makes several Vanilla flavors - French, Homemade & Natural (my favorite). http://bluebell.com/IceCreamFlavor?fid=25

It can be hard to find certain flavors of theirs in my area, you have to hit the store right after delivery or they get wiped out.

Raleigh area Pancakes

Pam used to work for Ed Watkins a long time ago (at the original Farmers Market Restaurant I think). Ed's son, Jackie opened and ran the Restaurant at the new Farmers Market when it opened until about 10 years ago when Gypsy Gilliam (Gypsy's Shiny Diner) took it over.

Holden Beach, NC - and surrounding area - Restaurants to add to the agenda....?

They are staying at Holden Beach - Ocean Isle is actually closer than Calabash.

Sugar Shack is semi - authentic, yes the owner is Jamaican but everything has been Americanized (spice level turned way down). Almost everything is a bit too sweet for my taste. They do offer some of the right dishes though, just not what someone who is familiar with "Real" Jamaican flavors will be looking for (and I do like spicy, should admit).

I spent time over there after Hurricane Gilbert doing relief work, living and working in villages with no phone or power at times. I ate whatever the people I was helping had prepared, which all came from what that beautiful island still had to offer.

They also do a very good job with Ribs and Steak but you will pay for it. But hey, you are on vacation and by the time you figure gas money to drive to Myrtle Beach it is probably a wash -

Amy,

I'm local and you have gotten pretty good info so far. There just is not a whole lot to choose from unfortunately.

Have not been to Capt. Pete's since new owners so can't comment there. Patronies has excellent Pizza and good people who own / run the place. Provision Co. is good for a casual lunch or dinner.

If you want Mexican, San Felipe or San Jose in Shallotte are a notch above average (San Jose has better Beer $). Stay away from Purple Onion unless you like Heartburn, everything from the griddle automatically comes with a side of grease. They also call themselves a Bakery but everything is from a box mix.

There is not a good Breakfast place until N. Myrtle Beach. For a surprise treat pick up a box or 2 @ Boiling Spring Lakes Doughnut Shoppe (CLOSED on Monday), they are as good as anywhere.

For a really good Burger or Sandwich try Duffer's in Shallotte. And yes Calabash for fried Seafood - I like Seafood Hut (you have to sit @ table outside) or Ella's. For grilled options and a bigger menu - Twin Lakes has never let me down, also a full Bar and decent desserts if you want to treat yourselves without driving all the way into N. Myrtle Beach.

Curse Blue Bell, they are responsible for 10lbs. added to me since they came to my area!
Dessert Trio, Pecan Praline & Banana Pudding are favorites, also their Vanilla Bean stands up to any competition. If you join their Newsletter they tell you about new flavors and you can print coupons for $1 off.

They make it too easy -

Looking for name or review of new Mexican restaurant in Raleigh -

off of Durant Rd. It is next to a Bojangles and took over a Seafood place. A couple of friends have told me it was good and want to make it a choice to meet while I'm in town this week. Said it was definitely above average.

No luck trying to find it on Google Map, still shows the Seafood place. Thanks for any help -

Raleigh Recommendations?

Take a look @ Margaux's menu. It is a "locally" owned & operated treasure that has been great since it opened almost 20 years ago. It is only about 10 minutes from North Hills area, well worth the short drive.

Never had anyone not thank me for sending them there.

N. Myrtle: Sports bar with great food?

Scooter -

I'm afraid such a place does not exist. There is a BIG Sports bar with lots of big TV's and decent food and drink specials called Overtime Sports Cafe in NMB. Other than that it's the Wing Places - BWW @ Gator Hole has the best beer selection and service.

If you want to go upscale a notch you can hit Gordon & Biersch and try to grab a table or booth that has a view to one of there several big screens.

Is there good food in Myrtle Beach?

All good info above. If you don't want seafood one night, Rioz is a very good Brazilian Steakhouse.

Sticky Fingers BBQ............

This chain sucks. The Olive Garden of BBQ restaurants.

Brazilian Steakhouses in Myrtle Beach

I have tried Rioz several times and enjoyed it, wanted to know how the two newer ones Gauchao and Fogo do Brazil compare. Can't find any reviews on either one, just articles from the local paper saying they were open and brief descriptions.

Thanks for any input, I've got a protein craving and need a fix.

North Carolina seafood restaurants - which ones source locally?

Twin Creeks which is right at the bridge before you cross over to Sunset Beach. The owners also own a Seafood Market. I know a few people who work there, everything comes from local sources.

You can tell the diffenece when you eat there, one of the only places I'll go myself or take company.

Ocean Isle and North Myrtle Beach

Twin Lakes is good for Seafood. They offer everything from grilled with a Carribean flair to fried and it is fresh - owners also own fish market. They are located right before you cross the Sunset Beach Bridge. Boundry House is also decent in Calabash and has a varied menu, something for everybody. If you just want "Calabash fried", the Seafood Hut as mentioned before is as good as it gets, local favorite but no frills. If you want to sit down (table service), try Ella's, it's across the street.

For your sweet tooth, the Calabash Creamery is worth a visit. Everything made in house using premium ingredients. It's not cheap , but how often do you really treat yourself to that kind of homemade fresh product?

My dear Raleigh friends, please save me from Golden Corral!

Maybe Red, Hot & Blue - Memphis style BBQ? It's pretty good, reasonable and will reserve sections / rooms for a large group.

Any suggestions for downtown Wilmington, NC?

For a Pint or Cocktail and snack or great sandwich/ burger try one of my favorite watering holes the "Copper Penny". The food is very good, well above the quality of most Pubs.

Holden Beach, NC Recs

I live down here and I'll vouch for Provision Co. (very casual) and Captain Pete's ( for a nice dinner, can get pricey) being consistently good.

Best Indian in the Triangle, NC?

I have tried some but not all of the above and my favorite is Royal India on Capital Blvd. It's not vegetarian and they don't tone down the heat like a lot of others for their lunch buffet which is very good and many items change daily

Anniversary in Raleigh

My .02 - I'll 2nd Fearrington House for a Anniversary dinner, my wife and I did our 10th there like rockycat and enjoyed it very much. It was very good, although a bit formal for me to do more than a special occasion. Pooles' Diner is excellent for a nice evening out, but not the kind of atmosphere you want for a 25th.

Birmingham

Dreamland was great. Excellent Ribs and the best Brunswick Stew and Smoked Sausage I've ever had.

On Tap was good as well (even full of Rutgers fans). I have to take back half of what I've ever said about NJ. They were honestly a pretty decent bunch of guys, I knew Joe Pesci was in their somewhere I just couldn't find him.

Birmingham

Thanks for all the input guys. My crew and I will not go hungry, looking forward to your cities hospitality.

Birmingham

Coming in a couple of weeks with some of the WolfPack nation for the Bowl game. Show a southern brother some love and tell me where I can raise my cholesterol a few points.

Saw you had an Original Pancake House, been to others and enjoyed. Is that location up to par?
Dreamland BBQ or others worth a visit?
Any good Draft Houses or Microbreweries?

Any and all recs appreciated -

Thanks,

Rod

New to Downtown Wilmington, NC

Maybe you meant particular or picky?

My wife loves Indochine for Thai-Vietnamese cuisine. I've only had leftovers, I'll vouch for those being quite good. The one Indian restaurant on College is average, but I crave Indian food so I hit their lunch buffet on occasion.

Not ethnic but Copper Penny is a landmark watering hole downtown that also has excellent food, if you like Trivia go on Wednesday night.

Dixie Grill, Jimbo's and Chris's for breakfast.

good places to eat in myrtle beach

2nd the Liberty reference, one of my favorites mostly because I'm a beer snob. Abuelo's is a good upscale Mexican restaurant @ Coastal Mall. Rioz decent Brazilian Steakhouse.

Anniversary Dinner in Raleigh

Thanks,

I have wanted to try J. Betski's out since they opened. Also going to check out the menus of some of these others.

Anniversary Dinner in Raleigh

Going to be there for a few nights during our Anniversary before an appointment, trying to keep the wife happy. We used to live there 4+ years ago and enjoyed Margaux's on occasion but know a lot has changed since then. We live on the coast now so no seafood recs please.

Thanks -

Sedona Restaurant in Raleigh

Update - Food was all good to very good (we tried a little bit of everything between 4 of us), Margarita's were a bit pricey but excellent. I think their prices are a bit high for the atmosphere, they are going to have to feature some specials and emphasize the Tex/Mex portion of the Menu to make it I think. I wish them the best because service was friendly, prompt and the food was better than average for that type of cuisine.

Sedona Restaurant in Raleigh

I used to live in Raleigh and I beleive it's in Pleasant Valley in the spot that was an Oyster Bar most recently. That location (close to Glenwood Ave.) has been several restaurants through the years, maybe this one will stick.
