Need a last minute place for dessert downtown

I appreciate your suggestions, I think that Financier Patisserie closes before 9:00pm. But Bouley Bakery is a great option if she is not too tired to make the 'trip" to TriBeca

Need a last minute place for dessert downtown

My mother happens to be in the city this evening and staying all the way downtown. I'm looking for a few suggestions on a nice place to grab dessert. She has a dinner meeting, so it will be for sometime after 9 pm. This place needs to be conducive to meeting my girlfriend and to have a drink or two over dessert. Since she is staying at the Ritz in Battery Park, I was trying to avoid there. But realize my options are a bit limited down there. I would normally ask her to come up to the Village but she has an early day tomorrow, so I'm trying to keep it close to her. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. BFF

Help - West Village dinner tonight, near PATH station??

Also right across the street from the path station on the corner of Christopher and Greenwich St there is an Italian place Gaetana's which has a great atmopshere for catching-up with a old buddy. Great pizzas and pasta at affordable prices. Have fun BFF

where to find hand made mozzarella sticks?

Not sure about places that serve them up at meals, but Faicco's pork shop on Bleecker street makes their own. Hope this helps. BFF

Help my 25 yr old niece!

IMO, Times square is the worst possible place to send anyone!! Blue Fin is not terrible but the location is dreadful. Especially when dealing with some one from LA. Kansas maybe, but LA no way.Sorry to anyone from Kansas, who I might have just offended. But the vibe of NY is not people sketching you or writing your name in butterflies. And it is certainly not the Olive Garden of TGI'Fridays. The vibe of NY is best captured in areas like the West Village or the LES, where you can walk from bar to bar or stroll down the street after a great meal without running into people who are amazed by the steaming cup of noodles. In the WV, I would suggest Employees Only or perhaps Smith to start. Depending on her interests I ight also suggest Little Branch for cocktails. In the LES, I agree with Stanton Social. Cool spot, great food. Just my thoughts. BFF

The old Grange Hall the new 'Commerce'

You are indeed looking at $25-30 entrees and the go higher. The drinks are the now West Village "average" of $12. And based on my experience there last night I would recommend giving it a while to work out all the kinks before going. Dinner for three two apps and three entrees with drinks was $270. And IMO based on the service not worth even a 1/3 of that. Hopefully the service and timing of dishes will work better in the future, I will give it another shot. But as I mentioned above, it will be quite some time before that happens.

JG vs. Nougatine vs. JoJo

Caitlin,

I am a big fan of JG and would highly recommend dining there. If you want the option though, sit at the bar in the nougatine dining room and you can order from either the JG or nougatine menus. Either way you should have a great time. Hope you have fun and congrats on the promotion.

Dessert or Bakeries in E. Village

I suggest Black Hound on Second Ave. It is not sit down but the desserts are great!

Chicken Cordon Bleu

Hey fellow Hounds, I am looking for some recommendations for a place to get a great version of this dish. Willing to travel but would prefer to stay close to home (West Village). Thanks in advance. BFF

Favorite Baklava?

Poseidon Bakery on 9th Ave has great Greek pastries.

Pancakes and french toast

I am a big fan of Bubby's pancakes. They are amazingly fluffy and super filling. Only drawback is you usually have to deal with the sounds of plenty of children in the place. I say drawback not because I hate kids, but because after a night out there is usually one or more members of my brunch party that requires a quieter location to refuel.

We're in NYC tomorrow for the weekend - help!

You can say what you like about the kosher part and based on your user name I am guessing that factor doesn't matter to you. As I cannot argue that is not kosher, but neither is Katz's. But I will say this, one can't find Russian dressing like that anywhere else. As for the bread choice, the club roll holds up to the wait of the pastrami, unlike the rye, which crumbles in your hands. So, IMHO a Katz's pastrami on a club roll with their Russian dressing is a NY treat not to be missed. Also, a word of advice if you do hit up Katz's, make sure you tip your counter guy prior to him slicing the meat. It will make all the difference in the amount of meat you get. Like I said before have a great time on your trip here.

Best Chocolates

Top two favorites are La Maison du Chocolat, their Truffles in particular and from Leonidas any of their Belgian pralines are amazing. You can not go wrong with either. As for chocolate dishes in a restaurant, I would say the chocolate tasting at Jean Georges gets my vote.

We're in NYC tomorrow for the weekend - help!

I second the Doughnut Plant. Would also throw in the mix a Katz's pastrami sandwich on a club roll with Russian dressing for a true NY treat. They are located on Houston Street. For some great cookies visit Milk and Cookies on Commerce Street in the West Village. Let the Board know what you try. Have fun.

late night dining/drinks

I would also suggest checking out Little Branch on Seventh Ave. Great drinks in a very unique atmosphere. Well worth the trip.

Peanut Butter Cake

Those sound great! I was just suggesting that cookies may not be what they were shooting for as a birthday treat.

Peanut Butter Cake

Not sure your price range but the peanut cake from Jean Georges is to die for. If not For the record, the cup cakes at Hill Country are 6 bucks a piece. Also the peanut butter cookies at Magnolia are good too. Perhaps not suitable for a birthday but great none the less..

Did "Tuck Shop" go out-of-business?

No the Tuck Shop is alive and well on First St. Lincoln and Niel are still cracking out those wonderful Aussie pies. Not sure why you got an error message, but they are up and running and open until midnight tonight.

Fried fish in NYC metro anyone?

A Salt and Battery matches up to latter of the two types of places you mentioned above. It is an English Fish and Chips place. Great product in my opinion. There are two locations, one in the east village and one in the west. Hope this helps.

West Village Best to Make Boyfriend Want to Move to NYC

I agree. I think August is underwhelming. I would add Perry Street to the mix.

The Ultimate Jerky List - NYC

Two places that have great jerky are the buffalo butcher stand at the Union Square green market and the homemade jerky at the Waterfront Ale House. Both are excellent with the green market version being a bit more juicy.

Eternal Fried Chicken Quest

I love fried chicken and have to say Charles is the best in the city but a bit of trip for a chicken fix. I recently had the fried chicken special at At Home on Cornelia Street which was amazing. The breading was crisp and not overly oily. Great product, I highly recommend trying it if it on the menu.

jazz brunch in nyc please

Jules on St Mark's btw 1 and 2, does a jazz brunch.

One NYC cupcake

Billy's on 9th ave

Best Restaurant Bars to Dine Alone

JG has a bar and the best part about sitting at it is that you can order off both the JG menu as well as the Nougatine menus. And for the record, all the staff at JG will treat you in such a way that you will feel special.

Best cocktails in the city?

Death and Co. Are a bunch of high on themselves flunkies. When I inquired about vodka, as their drink menu did not have a single drink with vodka on it, I was told that vodka does not add anything to the flavor profile. They do have vodka, but they balked when I tried to order it. Instead the convinced me to have their version of a pimms cup, which was soapy and contained little to no pimms but plenty of strawberries (if you are asking why the strawberries, I asked too). Snippy response about that is how they make it. All this attitude plus weak 12 dollar drinks in one of the darkest rooms in the city. You can have a much better time elsewhere.

Is BBQ in NYC hopeless? How is BLUE SMOKE?

As to your first question, BBQ in NYC is a spotty at best game.
Second question: Blue Smoke is way over-rated. Being from Memphis, I am aware of what they are shooting for. Too bad they miss on most things. The food is over priced Danny M. fare. That said they do a alright pulled pork and mac and cheese. Ribs are lackluster.

If what you are looking for is true or at least truer BBQ, your best bet is Daisy May's BBQ on 11th ave. By far the best the city has to offer, in this department. I must also give a nod to Hill Country, but they only serve the the Texas version of BBQ AKA brisket with the only pork product on the menu being ribs all come with an underwhelming sauce. Good luck with your quest for the Q.

Best Cuban in the City?

I would also recommend Little Havana on Cornelia St.

Best cocktails in the city?

Employees Only has great drinks and food as well.
