What restaurant will I love?

I'm looking to try a new place for dinner Saturday night. Like all our standby options, but I just want to try something I haven't tried before - so many good options, and we tend to go to our favorites over and over again instead of trying new. What do you recommend for a date night?

Some of the restaurants we like a lot, food and ambience-wise:
- Bolsa
- Lucia, but impossible to get a reservation
- the new Marquee - we would go there again, but I can't get a reservation at the time I want
- the Grape
- Samar, but too crazy on a weekend
- we used to love Lola, the Tasting Room, and miss it a lot

Like, but not blown away:
- Abacus
- Stephen Pyles

Anything in that vein? Good food is important!

20 cent martinis! I would be that sloshed person on the airplane that you end up reading in the paper about! (But in a good, definitely unscary way.)

Monday lunch that isn't too heavy or rich??

I forgot Question #4, which is - how on earth do you ever choose??? I have completely revamped my food itinerary 3 times already. I just keep finding more "can't pass up" places and swapping other things out to make room. Originally I had Dragos or Acme for as many chargrilled oysters as we could eat, but then I got worried that oysters are difficult/expensive now with the oil spill. :( I hope I'm wrong about that, but just in case - there are so many other options, too.

Looking at the menus for all of your suggestions now -- thank you guys so much!

Monday lunch that isn't too heavy or rich??

I'm planning a long weekend in August and am starting to worry about my capacity for all this glorious food! I've got one more meal slot to fill and would love to get opinions.

So far, our plan is:
-- Friday -- lunch of po boys at Mahony's, then a late dinner at August
--Saturday -- lunch at Galatoires, dinner of the BBQ shrimp at Mr B's
-- Sunday -- the jazz brunch at Commanders Palace, then a late dinner at Stella!
-- Monday – ???

(1) I'm trying to balance things out so that I don't eat two massive meals only a few hours apart. It's impossible! But that's why early po boys and then late dinner at August, for example. Have I accomplished this, or am I setting myself up for failure?

(2) I want to try to find a lunch place on Monday that is an excellent goodbye to the city, but that is not too heavy or rich of food. I think there's a good chance I'll be butter-overloaded by that point. Also, I don't have a ton of time because I have to leave for the airport at around 2pm and have to swing back by my hotel in the French Quarter. So many places are closed for Monday lunch. Emerils is open, but I wonder if it's just too much by that point? What do you suggest?

(3) Also, I am hoping to be able to get seated downstairs at Galatoires on a Saturday. Not too late because I don't want to bump up against dinner. Am I asking for the impossible -- will it be crazy crowded and I should book upstairs instead?

I have never eaten at any of these places! I would love any tips you have to give about seating, must-order dishes, etc.

Sevilla Tapas Question

As a VERY general question, may I ask you about how many items we should order per person to make a good full meal of tapas?

Olive Oil Tours?

I wonder if anyone has ever taken an olive oil tour out of Granada? I'm specifically looking at the one put out by OliveOilTours.com, but would be glad of other suggestions if anyone has personal recommendations. Is the lunch fairly good, and is the experience worth the time/effort?

Thanks!

Snow cones in Texas - Best ones???

Wonderful sno cone stand in Far North Dallas, on Arapaho near Hillcrest. I think it's called Rick's, and it's in front of the grocery store there.

best thai in dallas?

We just had our first meal at Jasmine Thai this weekend, and it was excellent! It was so good that we looked at each other afterward and agreed that we're actually mad we hadn't found this place earlier. It's so convenient to us, and we'd heard good reviews for a long time but just hadn't gotten around to it.

We had the herbal chicken appetizer, which I agree with previous posters is quite exceptional and unexpected. It was the right amount of seasoning and crispiness, without even a hint of grease. I especially liked the crisped basil leaves scattered throughout.

Another standout was the garlic prawns, which came with a lime fish-sauce cucumber garlic dipping sauce. The prawns are enormous, whole, and fried perfectly. Both these dishes, by the way, were recommendations by our waiter.

Spicy beef was lovely though a little sweeter than I had expected. Lemongrass catfish was quite nice and again - unexpected, because it came with minced chicken on top.

We liked Jasmine Thai very much and will be back next weekend.

Pho in Dallas?

My father says to never, never eat pho after 2pm. You eat pho for breakfast and into mid-day, preferably on days when it's grey and clouded over outside. But after 2pm, you're always going to get the dregs.

Seoul Garden Dallas Review

Absolutely the same experience here. We tried Seoul Garden based on favorable reviews on Chowhound, and it was possibly the worst Korean barbecue I've ever had. We were very disappointed. None of the meats had a sharp, strong enough flavor, and all seemed "flabby" as opposed to lean and sliced thinly.

We normally go to Korea House and found everything, item for item, to be superior at Korea House.

Pho in Dallas?

Also Vietnamese - also categorically reject the pho at Pho Que Huong. We always go to Pho Bac in Richardson, partly out of inertia because that's where we've always gone, that's where my parents and relatives go, and it's always been excellent so we've never had reason to change.

Akbar-Plano

I used to go there, too, in the early 90s, and it was fantastic. Great buffet, lots of variety, everything well done. I went there for old times sake a couple of years ago and was dismayed to discover that it had really declined terribly.

Jasper's In Plano

I find that it's not even worth the drive from Far North Dallas - and that's only a 5 minute drive. I've tried to like Jaspers, but I find the food there just as you say - soggy, oversalted, and "trying too hard." Example: the mac and cheese, which is elaborate but loses its panache after 3 bites. The Maytag potato chips I got were also lukewarm and soggy by the time they arrived at my table.

Anniversary party for @25 guests Plano area, where?

Call Zanders and see if they can work with you. They don't have a private DR, per se, but have half of the restaurant pretty much unused except when they book parties. It's marvelous Vietnamese food, very innovative and well executed. They can put together a menu for you in that price range if you so designate.

I also quite like Jin Beh, which is a busy hibachi place on the very outskirts of the mall there.

Fun restaurant in Frisco? Help!

We just stumbled into Caribbean Cafe this afternoon, and it was a terrific find! I had the vaca frita (beef well marinated in citrus juices) and my husband had the ropa vieja (beef in tomato sauce). We also had the appetizer sampler and were pleased with pretty much everything we tasted, especially the salty fried plantains.

Sushi in Plano

Sushi Awaji is our favorite in the Dallas area, too -- highly underrated/under-discovered, which we don't mind a bit since we can usually get a table. Try the grilled miso seabass as an appetizer. It is extraordinary. We also always get the mamasan rolls as well.

Does anybody know if I can get D'Artagnan black truffle butter at either Central Market or Whole Foods?

Aurora or Lola?

I did indeed go to Lola this past weekend, and it was extraordinary. It was really an amazing menu. There were 12 courses (with the optional foie gras/beets and orange sauce, and followup truffle), and along with the full wine flights, we WERE feeling ready to explode. The meal was also very well paced. It felt continuous but not rushed. It was a leisurely 2.5+ hour dinner, and the wine pairings were quite perfect with the food selections.

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations!

Aurora or Lola?

I have to choose between Aurora and Lola for a special birthday dinner. Which would you choose, if a memorable food experience is the main consideration? (If Lola, we would probably do the Tasting Room, unless you tell me the Dining Room is the way to go.)

Thanks very much.

Where to buy cake for large group (20-40 people)?

I just bought a great children's birthday party cake from Aston's Bakery. They did a fantastic job with the decoration, and I will definitely be ordering from them again in the future.

[DFW] Zander's House, Plano

Another rave review for Zanders. We just discovered it two weekends ago, and even though we've only had the "basic" lunch menu there (two Saturdays in a row), we're already planning on becoming regulars. The dinner menu sounds fantastic, and the beef carpaccio which has been mentioned several times before is available all day long. I am Vietnamese and was glad to find a place that serves the meals my mother makes, as good as (and better - but don't tell her I said so...) than she makes them.
