Late night dinner date on Westside?

Agree A-Frame could be a great choice. Where did you end up going?

cachaça in the westside?!?!

Just confirmed Star Liquor on Main St. has it too. They had Lebon, Cachariga(sp?), and one other I think. Didn't see 51 or Ypioca.

Best Burger in LA?

After 2 more years of tasting, my updated favorites....

Gourmet Burger - Father's Office. Thought the burger at Fig was very good too. Comme Ca I have yet to try.

Fast Food - In N Out, when the bun is grilled properly this beats 90% of the burgers on this thread

Sit Down Chain - I'm really enjoying The Habit recently. Has anyone else had good luck here? Seem's like the new Fatburger.

Diner/Dive Burger - Hinano in Venice

Fun weird restaurants in LA?

A friend went there last weekend and loved it. They must be re-opened.

Fried Chicken on the west side

I think this thread covers the best that I'm aware of. I found Honey's Kettle to be the best, better than Pan's or Aunt Kizzy's.

Has anyone tried the FC at Le Grand Orange? Based on my previous meals there, I have no expectations, but I'll give anything a try in the quest for the ultimate fried bird.

*Bazaar* - Impressive? Would I go back?

Given all the hype and the expansive menu, was ready to be disappointed. But I'm sold. Bazaar is the real deal and the playful menu works for a few small plates with drinks or full a full meal. Jose's take on Philly Cheesteak in sinful. Crab and ceviche avocado roll with corn flake crust really nice. Modern take on Caprese is not to be missed. Tempura avocado a waste of your time.

Would take at least 3 more trips to really put a dent in the menu.

Best Fish And Chips on the West Side

I finally tried Kings Head. I would classify them as very good, not great. The breading is nice and the fish is fresh. My issue was the fillets are HUGE so the ratio of crispy-to-fish was off. They were almost steak-sized. They offer a 1-piece or 2-piece order. 1 piece is effectively a full order anywhere else. 2-piece (which I ordered) is aggressive. I took care of business but have been tasting oil all day:)

If I'm looking for fried fish on the West Side, Malibu Seafood is still my choice. Cock N' Bull had trash fish n' chips imo...mush city.

CHOOSE OUR NEXT MEAL - JOSIE OR HATFIELD'S!

Looking for a lively dining experience with great food.

Likes: Diverse menus with a good mix of meat & seafood entrees. Strong appetizers, often in place of entrees if they are good enough. Good wines by the glass & bottle.

Good experiences at: Luques, Animal, Tasca, Wilson, Jiraffe, Hungry Cat

Did not enjoy: Fraiche, AOC, Providence, Melisse, Beacon

Thanks for the tips.

Animal has an incredible Oxtail ragout over fries with vermont cheddar (their take on Poutine) that would make a Vegetarian need counseling.

Best Pizza in Los Angeles (& surrounding)????!!

I finally tried Joe Peep's the other day. Can we please formally have it removed from good pizza conversation? The crust was a joke and the sausage worse than most frozen pizzas. It's certainly not authentic NY style and I'd argue its barely pizza.

Sorry for the harsh words but I allow plenty of flexibility for what is 'pizza' (flatbreads, Mozza, NY style, cracker crust bistro, California) but its got to taste good.

Chicago style pizza in West LA? (or even 8 mile radius?)

I don't disagree but don't you find that to be a disappointing standard? After all, I can find Italian food as good as any in Italy here, NY Style Pizza (Joe's) as good as almost any in NY, world class Korean BBQ, and amazing sushi . I think we can have higher standards. If San Francisco/Oakland can have amazing Chicago style pizza, why can't LA?

Kevin --I'd honestly recommend you mail order from Giordano's or Lou Malnati's if you want the real experience. BJ's is decent pan pizza not Chicago style (despite their name) and the chain/franchise Numero Uno are terrible now and nothing like the original.

Chicago style pizza in West LA? (or even 8 mile radius?)

Just to provide an update I had a friend (also from Chicago) try out Masa's and said its a waste of time...you'll be disappointed. He is a VERY trusted source (he does approved of Zachary's in SF). So I have no doubt that if you really like Chicago style pizza and know a good one, do not bother with Masa's.

I guess I'll try Tony's in Placentia next.

MY TOP 10+ LA BBQ JOINTS - LONG - W/ PICS

For a Regional Variation BBQ Newb like myself, help me figure out what I like. I really enjoy heavy vinegar sauces and lots of pulled pork, so I think it may be Carolina style based on what I read below:

http://bbq.wetpaint.com/page/Styles+o...

Had Mo's in Pismo Beach over the weekend and loved their Filthy Phil's BBQ sauce.

Has anyone tried Outlaw's in Playa Vista yet? Especially their baby back. I found their ribs to be better than Baby Blues, Porky's, or Cecil's.

Any specific Carolina style BBQ places in LA?

Gjelina - Dressed to impress, but what's underneath?

Gjelina is unique and fills a good niche of covering the pseudo wine-bar, small plate, go with friends or on a date thing.

Uber-cool dark wood/industrial space with a great outdoor patio w/beautiful, uplit brick wall.

This place certainly is hipster....a little too hipster if you ask me. Sure, I'd like to think I have some light hipster overtones, but it looks like these people went to a costume store on Halloween to find hipster outfits, purchased one, then on the way out, ran back in because they needed just a little more hipster.

The food was decent. The gourmet pizza's have great cracker crusts but are really flatbreads with toppings more than pizza. I'd recommend the bacon & fontina one. The duck confit was decent, authentic with crispy skin, but pricey for the portions. The 'grilled' artichokes were okay, tasted more like grilled, canned artichokes.

What bugged me more was the wine. Was 0-for-2 with glasses of wine and they were both TERRIBLE (Italian red blend and Marsanne white). Virtually no glass on the menu is less than $10-12 so that is disappointing.

So overall, dressed to impress, but a little too pricey for what you get.

Top Wine Stores in West LA?

How is it? It's not a very inviting storefront and never appears to have anyone in it.

I do like the 'Staff Pick's and In N' Out burger-like prozaked employees at Wally's....much more personal than Wine House. Just today I told Jeremiah I would be back for his head if his recommended Brunello doesn't work out:)

I guess we should all feel fortunate to have 2 of the biggest wine distributors in the US within a few miles.

MY TOP 10+ LA BBQ JOINTS - LONG - W/ PICS

They used to have a huge outdoor smoker but the LA Fire Department wouldn't let them do it open air (yes, we no longer live in a democratic country), but they still make them and they are excellent. The place is usually empty which is why there's probably not much on it.

Buddha's Belly - WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

As a 3 year Angeleno, I try to defend our fine city and its restaurant patrons from the LA bashing that generalizes our town is all about style over substance....clique over community. And then I find a place which may prove them all right...that encapsulates all that can be improved in our fine ciudad....Buddha's Belly.

Miserable. And this is even after giving credit where credit is due....a nice ambience in a category dominated by dollar store decor and 'B' health ratings. Food that comes off as healthy, rather than oil soaked. However, at the end of the day, the food is horrific, I mean insulting. The 'Green Curry' is a sloppy soup of blandness, as equally disappointing as the 2 other dishes I've had there and forgotten or gone into denial. And yet both locations stay hopping by some mystery of voodoo, celebrity marketing, or Daily Candy bribery.

I don't mean to react so violently, but I feel like it's my responsibility to protect you from this, like a trusty watch dog loyally presiding over his homestead, or George Bush Sr. from having Wubya take his own SAT exams.

Chowhounders....We are Los Angeles' last hope! To speak the the truth where the morons on Citysearch and the naive on Yelp fail miserably. It's not just our passion, its our duty!

Friends of Chowhound....Please join me in blackballing Buddha's Belly!!

Best Pizza in Los Angeles (& surrounding)????!!

If Mulberry St. is the 4th best pizza place in LA, I'm moving immediately as that's just too depressing of a thought.

I give Vito's and Joe's the nod as the two great NY style pizza places in the city of Los Angeles. People can argue which is better, but they both deliver.

Where is Terroni? Gas is expensive these days so El Jeffe is even more West-side inclined than usual:)

MY TOP 10 FAVE L.A. PIZZAS

Great list. Of the ones I've had, I'd have to take Abbot's (poor crust) and Antica (weak attempt at cracker crust), and add Joe's.

It saddened me that by far the best cracker crust pizza I've had in the last 3+ years of living in LA was at Enoteca in Cartagena, Colombia last week. I think they tells you something about the state of affairs here:)

Thank god for new entrants like Joe's & Mozza.

L.A.'s Best Appetizers

Everyone is different so rather than tell you what to eat, here are my favorite 'appetizer' friendly places that you should explore for yourself:

Tasca
Musha (Izakaya is pretty much all appetizers)
Lucques
Hungry Cat usally has great special apps. The blue crab and escolar carpaccio have been some of my favorites in LA.
I've been told Craft has amazing appetizers

Finally: Tu Lan [SF]

For the Bun Cha eaters out there, Tu Lan is one of my favorite in all of California. There Imperial Rolls are without a doubt the best I've ever had. I live in LA now and can't seem to find any Vietnamese places with imperial rolls anywhere near as good....they typically end up being boring egg rolls, which I hate.

Any LA transplants know where I can find IR's that good down here?

Best Grocery Rotisserie Chicken

I live in LA (Santa Monica) and want to see who people think has the best. Albertson's has consistently beat out Von's, Ralph's, and even California Chicken Cafe when I've put them head-to-head. And a great price as well...
