Help! Need a place to go for my graduation dinner this Sat in Backbay/Downtown/SE

Hi all!

I am graduating from grad school this sat (yey!!) and my small family and I are going out for an early dinner afterwards. We will be in backbay for the ceremony, however if the place is perfect, willing to cab it anywhere. My sister suggested Mistral (which I LOVE) but I don't want her to spend that much money if possible, though I may change my mind lol. Are there any suggestions that you may have for nice places for 3 people with entrees not over $25 ish (wiggle room there, but I prefer not, as I am not buying). Willing to do all kinds of food, just not so much with chains.

Sorry for how broad this is, I have just been a poor student for so long I don't even know what restaurants are out there anymore! Thank you for your help : ) I really appreciate it!

Why did Croma Close? Does anyone know anything about Pazzo that is replacing it?

I just walked by croma, located across from tapeo on Newbury btw Fairfield and Gloucester, and noticed that it closed. Does anyone know why?

It will be replaced by Pazzo- sounds italian....does anyone know about it? I love the patio and hope that the service and food will be better than Cromas!!

Piattini on newbury- Any Recs?

Also, how small exactly are the plates... I am going for lunch with a friend but don't want to order too much food.... Thank you!

Can anyone reccomend a GREAT place for soup dumplings and dim sum?

Thank you- I was confused until I read Pan's rec. I guess that it stands to reason that they would be in different restaurants as they are from different places : )

Healthy and delicious restaurants near the prudential?? Help!

Hi!

My office (located in the prudential) orders lunch 2-5 times a week and we are getting REALLY sick of the places that we go to all of the time:

Paradise Bakery
Qdoba
Cheescake Factory
Papa Razzi
Scoozi

and we need a new place, non asian, that is relatively healthy and not too too expensive that someone can walk to and pick up orders from. Any help is very appreciated. Thank you!!!!

Can anyone reccomend a GREAT place for soup dumplings and dim sum?

I am really craving an excellent soup dumpling, or really good dumplings in general and dim sum? preferably near the financial district, although willing to go wherever for great dim sum!! Thank you!

MOVING TO DOWNTOWN/FIN. DISTRICT, NEED AFFORDABLE RESTAURANT RECs

Thank you for all of the great recs! I can't wait to try them all plus that grocery deal sounds amazing.

MOVING TO DOWNTOWN/FIN. DISTRICT, NEED AFFORDABLE RESTAURANT RECs

Hi all!

I am moving downtown (near Stone Street) this week and am looking for some recommendations for all restaurants, especially affordable ones as well as grocery stores.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Equally, you don't have to spend your money there. The recommendations that you gave above all came with some kind of disclaimer. Furthermore, "decent", "pretty good" "respectable" and "actually..." are not words that I want associated with a restaurant I would pay money to eat at.

The OP didn't ask where he could go and "not starve".

He asked where he could get a nice meal. SO really MC Slim, you have proven my point. There are plenty of restaurants in downtown Boston where he can get a nice meal without sacrificing ambiance, flavour or price, why else would he come to Chowhound? We are, after all, meant to be foodies, not recommenders of passable fare.

Inexpensive but Delicious food in Boston?? Help!

Wowsers, ALL of those places look amazing! That is exactly what I was thinking of, Thank you!

Newbury Street does not have one restaurant worth visiting for the merits of its food. Not one.

Sonsie is a BAR with a Nazi chef who demands that you not only order all three courses at once, but that there be no substitutions. That is lunacy.

First of all, the food is sub par, second of all, I eat out a lot, maybe 5 or more times a week, I always order several courses and am worth the amount of time I spend at the table with my guests. That said, I have NO IDEA what I want for my entree when I order my app. If restaurants like Clio, L'Espalier and Davios don't demand such a ridiculous order procedure, who is this jumped up sous to tell me that I have to KNOW and order right away.

Sonsie is overrated, which is an understatement. The servers and bartenders are nice though.

Avoid Newbury at all costs, not just for this trip, but always.

Inexpensive but Delicious food in Boston?? Help!

Yes, Josh is a sweetie and his food is great, I always forget about silvertones, thank you.

Also, Grotto, I didn't know that they had such an affordable prix fix. Thank you all for the great ideas! I know that we will be eating well.

I have decided that one of the mornings we will be doing dim sum and there apears to be argument over whether China Pearl or Some place by the gates (moon something) is better. Not to sound silly, but what kind of food is served at a dim sum? Because neither have an online menu and all I can find is vague reviews of both with no mention of specific food.

Thank you again!

Pierrot Bistrot - Invited to go tonight. I've heard bad things. Anybody have any experiences?

Pierrot on Cambridge Street (i.e. not Petit Robert's) is overrated.

I find it odd that there are complaints here about the "management"- it is a husband and wife team (she is considerably younger than he) and I find them charming.

The food however is not very good. It is ok, but for the money and for French food I would Always go elsewhere, in fact, I would def. reccomend Petit Robert's.

The last three times that I went to Pierrot they were out of the fois gras and had a limited cheese selection. Also, I find the that the food is consistantly underwhelming and mediocre, all except for the white chocolate souffle, which is so delicious it's almost worth the trip! Good luck!

Inexpensive but Delicious food in Boston?? Help!

To further define "inexpensive", as requested, anywhere from $10-$35 each before liquor would be ideal, although there exists a bit of wiggle room. (if $35, apps and entree, or all really great apps etc...)

Inexpensive but Delicious food in Boston?? Help!

Hi all,

My best friend is flying into Boston from Chicago for three days and nights over Thanksgiving and we will probably eat every meal out. Because of that, as well as a general lack of funds at the moment, we want to do a high quality, low price tour of Boston restaurants.

I am thinking Mom and Pop places, local restaurants that no one but you and your neighborhood know about, basically unique, delicious and inexpensive food off of the beaten path.

We enjoy all kinds of food and are welcome to any suggestions.

Thank you!

The filet mignon eggs benedict at Abe & Louis is GREAT! and it's only $16, all things considered, that's pretty good, and it's delicious as well!

Help a Brit for Thanksgiving

I second Aquitaine, and 647 for that matter, although I prefer the former

I completely disagree, sunday roast consists of roast, yorkshire puds, parsnips and brussell sprouts and roasted potatoes followed MAYBE by treacle or bread pudding. About the only similarity is the fact that there is meat veg starch and sugar which, truly, can be said of any meal.

Thanksgiving is a big family do all over America and generally consisits of a turkey filled with stuffing (while recipes vary, it is usually a bread based stuffing) mashed potatoes, gravy, candied yams or sweet potatoes and maybe peas or something similar followed by pecan pie or pumpkin pie.

It's really worth it to have a nice, family thanksgiving, but as that does not appear to be an option, ES sounds like it may accomodate.

Good luck!

Really truly great bowl of chowder?

I agree, this may sound blasphemous, but I do not eat fish or nearly anything from the sea apart from seaweed. I have lived in Boston for many years now and had my first cup of chowder, the thicker, less clamy kind, last week and really enjoyed it.

That said, I am sure that the brine-iness of the clams enhanced the flavour, making it preferrable to other sorts of chowder, at least for me.

It seems to follow reason, however, that someone who enjoys seafood would prefer the thinner, more clam filled version mentioned above.

Good luck!

Bob's Southern Bistro to Close

So where can one get southern cokking in boston proper now? I like redbones, but it isn't GREAT, the ribs are delicious though...

Seeking Boston and Cambridge suggestions for adults/teens

Lucca, in the North End, is FANTASTIC although a bit pricey

Thanksgiving caterer needed in Brookline

Many chefs will do this (and bring a busboy). Ask one from a restaurant that you like but is not too high profile. Just keep in mind that it will be expensive.

Just Got Back From Phantom Gourmet Food Festival

Is it- I grew up in Cali and there were a lot of them out there

Want Le Creuset, have no $$, alternatives???

My mom bought me the largest batali, and while I have only had it for a few weeks, I am VERY pleased with it- it seems the same as the LC she has and was much less expensive, although I suppose nothing is better than LC....

Want Le Creuset, have no $$, alternatives???

My Mommy's top handle (some kind of plastic) fell off as well. I will def. tell her about the lifetime garuntee!

Contrarian views on "popular" restaurants?

Hey, "MC"how often do you eat out- bc your OPINION is on nearly EVERY topic in the boston board. What do you do, bc it seems as though you DO nothing

Contrarian views on "popular" restaurants?

I see that you have done your due diligence! : )

No, I do not post under any name other than this. I thought that it was you, although I could have been mistaken. Perhaps your name came up bc I see it so frequently and remembered incorrectly. I apologize.

Re the change of heart- it's not really a change of heart. While the chef's tasting IS v. yummy it's not good value. As far as the a la carte menu goes I wouldn't bother spending the money.

Finally, while the chef's tasting is yummy, in general I think that the restaurant is overrated.

Contrarian views on "popular" restaurants?

TOTALLY agree, L'Espalier is WAY overrated, when I said this in a post awhile ago slim mcb or whatever his name is was all over me.

Lot's of money does not equal lots of quality

Where to take Nana for dinner in Cambridge?

I agree, Upstairs On The Square is fun, somewhat formal and has good food, I suggest the prix fix
