We live in Jersey City, New Jersey and are going to celebrate our daughter's first birthday in october. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good bakeries in Jersey City/Hoboken/NYC area to go to for great, creative cakes? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

50 things to eat in NC

I must agree with you on this one. i am from NC and live in New Jersey now and miss southern hot dogs TERRIBLY. Chili, slaw, mustard and onions is the way I like them and you sure can't get those here. I have to buy cans of Bunker Hill Chili when I go home to visit(harris teeter in greensboro carries it) and lug them back to NJ. I have to make hot dogs at home to get them the way I want. Those they sell here are bogus and not a big deal.

Saffron - Chapel Hill - Coming Soon!

everybody needs to try InChin off 54 in Morrisville. It is a combination of Indian and chinese cuisine.. It is truly delicious. 100 years ago chinese people emigrated to Kolkata , India and a truly delicious fusion of these two cuisines occured. There are two more restaurants in NC featuring this cuisine. Pao Lim in Durham and sechuan Palace in winston -salem. These two restaurants are owned by the same Man. I have Eaten chilli Chicken at Sechuan Palace and it is fantastic!. My husband is from Kolkata and says this is the closest you can get to Tangra(The name of the China town in Kolkata)style chilli chicken. If you go to InChin, you have to try the Hakka noodles, Chilli chicken and the chilli cauliflower. Fabulous!

Great dining in Winston Salem/Greensboro

I don't know if you have made your trip yet .I am from NC and lived in Greensboro for many years. I live in NJ now and when I return to NC I always have to go eat at the best thai reastaurant in the world. It is on Market street and is called Rearn Thai. great food. Another place I love is Lucky 32. they are owned by the same people who own Green Valley Grill. What i love about Lucky's is their menu main features change every six weeks and they use fresh local ingredients. They offer a diverse menu and the food and service are great.

Can One Freeze Homemade Cream of Broccoli Soup?

I am looking for foods to freeze for later as I am expecting a baby soon and want to be able to thaw and reheat meals I have made. I have made chili and stew beef and have frozen them for later. I found a recipe for cream of broccoli soup online and made it this week. It was delicious and I started to wonder if I could freeze it for later. I used light cream in the recipe. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Any other suggestions for homemade foods I could freeze for later? Hubby doesn't like red pasta sauce as it is too acidic for his stomach. Does anyone know if chicken casserole made using the pepperidge farm stuffing is a freezable item as well?
Thanks

Casa Dante Jersey City, NJ

My husband and I are thinking of going here for our anniversary on saturday night. I was looking at their menu online and saw their entrees had no prices beside them. Does anyone know the average prices of the entrees here? What is the average price here for a dinner for two?
Thanks.

New to Chapel Hill, Chinese Please!

If you can drive to Morrisville, there is an Indian-Chinese restaurant that is fabulous. I live out of state but when I return home to NC, I love to go here. Order the hakka noodles and the Chili chicken dry. You won't be disappointed. It is called InChin Bamboo Garden and the menu is posted online. You should really try it for a unique dining experience. Fabulous

Chapel Hill to Lexington, A 6-Stop Barbecue Extravaganza

My parents live in Asheboro and on their way to Bob Timberlake's studio, they always used to stop at Speedy's and just loved it. They also like Country Barbeque in archdale. I find that to be hit or miss alot of times. One time I went and it was good and other times I have found it to be very dry. I live inNew Jersey now and miss having good barbecue, so I try to eat it when I am home. I also miss Sir Pizza, Cook Out's carolina style cheeseburgers, having biscuits with breakfast in a diner/restaurant, and my favorite Thai place in Greensboro, NC but that is another thread.

Indian food in Broward County?

I like Udipi cafe on university just north of sunrise. I has a great buffet, especially on saturdays and is a great vegetarian restaurant. Also in pompano beach on powerline is a great Place called Madras Cafe. They have weekday and weekend lunch buffets and ordering off the menu at dinner yields very tasty results. You should try these places.

My 2 favorite places are Madras Cafe in Pompano Beach for a good variety of items. They have a lunch and weekend buffet and you can also get dosas. Another favorite is Udipi Cafe on University off of Sunrise. They also have a great weekend buffet that is totally vegetarian. My husband is from India and we both like these places alot.
Good Luck!

Bombay cafe in Boca - what's up?

Madras Cafe in pompano beach is the best Indian food I've had in the area. Their lunch buffets are great and you get a dosa with it. We went with friends one evening and ordered off the menu and the food was fabulous. I also really enjoyed a South Indian restaurant off Sunrise on University blvd called Udipi Cafe. They have fabulous south Indian vegetarian cuisine, especially on their weekend buffet. you should try that out.

What's your 'go-to' vegetarian main dish?

I second you foodsmith. Madhur Jaffrey is the queen of Indian cookbook authorship. When I first started cooking indian food, her books are where I learned from. Her recipes make indian cooking much easier as they are geared more toward an american audience but still getting great results. My husband makes the biryani from her book and it is so splendid that I have deemed him the "Biryani King". Definitely worth buying. She has written several so look through them all and see what you like. Some of the same recipes are in more than one book.

Good Middle Eastern Kebobs in Northern NJ?

I live in Jersey city, NJ and was wondering if any of you guys know of a good place with good middle eastern style kebabs and rice. We went to a great kebab place while in montreal last september with great hummus, pita, and lots of locals. Hubby and I are craving that again so going all the way back to montreal is out of the question. It doesn't have to be in JC, surrounding towns that are a 15- 30 minute drive are acceptable. We have tried shadman in JC several times and it is pretty good but we are looking for something else.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

What's your 'go-to' vegetarian main dish?

I cook alot of indian food as my husband is from calcutta. many weeks we go meatless because the veg food is so flavorful. you can google good indian vegetarian dishes for recipes such as aloo gobi(potatoes and cauliflower), dal(lentils and these are great because they are loaded with protein) okra, cabbage , potatoes with green peas, etc.... Also when we feel like eating light and are tired of meat, I make a spicey black bean filling for tacos. I like to spice them with ground cumin, corriander, some thyme and chili powder depending how hot one likes it. if you top it off with fresh cilantro, it isvery good. You can also use the fat free, spicey, or traditional canned refried beans as a taco filling. Pesto pasta with vegetables(mushrooms, peppers, onions) is good as well. You can also do a stir fry asian vegetarian noodle dish(you could also cook chicken seperately and meat eaters could add this if they want). I make an Indian-chinese dish called 'Hakka Noodles". You buy the noodles at indian grocery stores. That is quite a tasty dish. Good luck.

Are George Foreman grills worth it?

Yes it is true. The quality of aged hereford beef is the key to the great result I got. I know that the chain of grocery stores that sells aged hereford that I have seen is "The Fresh Market" i live in northern New Jersey and have asked on chowhound where I can find it but nobody ever responded.Best beef you will ever buy.

Best Indian in Atlanta

I love to eat at an Indian-Chinese restaurant that is a southern chain. They have them in areas where there is a large idian population such as morrisville, nc(which is where I ate), Columbus, Ohio , Dallas And one near you (I found after looking at theier website)is in North Decatur on church st. It is called InChin Bamboo Gardens. Indian Chinese is fantastic. the flavor combinations are great and just meld together seamlessly. Try the chilli chicken dry. I am surprised this cuisine hasn't become more popular.
Good Luck.

Has anybody tried Woods' On South?

I used to watch Marvin Woods' cooking program on Turner south and heard he opened a restaurant on South Blvd. in Charlotte. I am not usually one to go to a restaurant just because of the chef but because I live in the north and don't get southern comfort food except when I cook it and I love his take on it, I would love to try it. What do you all think about it? I will be in NC for christmas and would love to try it.
Thanks.
