The Walnut Grille: new vegetarian dining spot in Newton

I was thrilled to learn about The Walnut Grille in Newton Highlands since our family of five includes people on vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets. We have been to the restaurant twice since it opened, and I am very excited about this place! The head chef, Shiva, has roots at The Garden Grille in Providence and at Red Lentil in Watertown, and it shows in the absolutely delicious food: beautifully seasoned and presented on both occasions. I was very impressed by the wide range of menu items; as a vegetarian, I am not accustomed to having so many choices.

I loved the Asian Tofu and the Polenta Napoleon that a friend and I shared for dinner, but I am looking forward to trying the many other options in the future (and my husband is so excited that he can get a vegan, gluten-free pizza if he wants one.) For brunch, I had a delicious vegan scramble with lots of fresh veggies, home fries and Iggy's whole grain toast (gluten-free toast available.) My husband really enjoyed the chance to eat a vegan, gluten-free belgian waffle with a tower of fresh fruit on top. The menu for kids is varied and reasonably priced, although many of the regular entrees could also work great for kids to split. The restaurant has a smoothie and juice bar and recently started serving alcohol (including gluten-free beer.) We didn't try the drinks, but they were a popular item both days we were there. I also heard through friends that the carrot cake is outstanding!

The Walnut Grille is a friendly atmosphere that can work for a casual meal or for something nicer. The restaurant has only been open for about ten days, and they are still working out some details. (For example, they didn't have jelly or jam for the toast yet, and the waitress wasn't fully familiar with which desserts were gluten-free.) However, I think this place is top notch on so many levels, and I can see it becoming a regular dining spot for us. I hope that others check it out as we could really use more delicious vegetarian restaurants in the area!

Seeking food ideas for Sept 12th barn party in Newton/Weston area

Thank you so much for the tips! I will definitely look into Russo's. I love Baker's Best, although I think of them as pricey. Blue Ribbon BBQ IS supposed to be great, but that might be an odd fit for me as I am a vegetarian (even though my husband isn't!) I plan to order non-vegetarian food but want good veggie options too. :-) Feel free to let me know if any other ideas come up....love this forum!

Seeking food ideas for Sept 12th barn party in Newton/Weston area

Hi all, I am throwing my husband a 40th birthday party at a barn in Weston on September 12th. Since we have three kids (including one baby!), I am behind on the food part of the event. We will have a drum circle and then a jazz trio during dinner and dessert. The event will be informal with about 65 adults AND kids. I am looking for some delicious food that won't break the bank and that can be served cold (if possible!) and as a buffet. My husband especially loves cheese, local produce and creative food. Any ideas of good, reasonable caterers/cafes in the Newton/Weston area? (We live in Newton, and the party will be in Weston Center.) Many thanks in advance!

Seeking small wine or beer tasting (w/ tour?)

Hi all, a close friend is turning 40, and we are looking for a great place for a small wine or beer tasting and/or tour for a group of 8-15 people (most likely on a Saturday.) Dinner would follow the event or could be part of it. Our friend lives in the Framingham area, but we are thinking of hiring a limousine for guests and could travel within 45 minutes or so. Any ideas would be GREAT. (The event will be in early November.)

Thanks so much!

seeking Newton-area restaurant w/ private room for 80!

Hi all, I am getting married on Sunday, June 22nd, and our guests are staying at the Newton Marriott. We are looking for a restaurant in the Newton/Needham/Wellesley area (a quick cab ride from the Marriott) that can host a rehearsal dinner the night before for up to 80 guest: either in a private room or in a sectioned-off space of the restaurant. We are hoping to keep costs down, but we do want a reasonably priced atmostphere with yummy food. We looked at Papa Razzi in Wellesley, but the room was pretty blah. We are also thinking about the back part of Amarin in Wellesley; the only drawback is that they have several wooden partitions in the middle of the space. We would LOVE other thoughts.

Many thanks,
Sara

seeking yummy catered buffet on a budget

Hi all, I am getting married in Newton on Sunday, June 22nd, and we are trying to be as inclusive as possible for our rehearsal dinner the night before. The rehearsal dinner atmosphere will be casual with indoor and outdoor space available. We would love to bring in reasonably priced but GOOD food in a buffet style. We have thought of ideas like Sweet Tomatoes or Upper Crust pizza, but we are worried that pizza might be too messy or cool off too quickly. We would love other ideas that aren't brunch-like in style (as our wedding will be Sunday brunch food.) Bonus points for something in the greater Newton area. We also need to make sure that there are some vegetarian options.

Many thanks in advance!

Seeking rehearsal dinner spot in Newton/Needham/Wellesley

Thank you for the suggestions so far! To answer the first question, we will have 50-100 people, and the price range is (hopefully!) $20-$35/person. As for the Newton Marriott, I really like their restaurant too, but the rehearsal dinner would have to be held in a portion of a ballroom: not our style. I though about Fuji but don't think I could do it as a vegetarian. :-) Please keep any ideas coming! THANK YOU.

Seeking rehearsal dinner spot in Newton/Needham/Wellesley

Hi all, we are getting married at the Barn at Gibbet Hill on April 6th, and our guests are staying at the Newton Marriott. We are looking for a nearby rehearsal dinner location at a restaurant (kid-friendly as there will be about 15 little kids) in the Newton/Needham/Wellesley area. We were thinking of combining the dinner with bowling at the Needham-Bowlaway, so any Needham ideas would be great; but we are open-minded to places near the Marriott. Many thanks in advance for your ideas!

Romantic Berkshires spot with veggie options?

Hi all, my boyfriend and I are coming up from the Boston area this weekend to stay at the Red Lion Inn to celebrate our first anniversary and my birthday! We are looking for a special spot (not TOO far from Stockbridge or Lenox) to have a romantic dinner on Saturday night. (On Sunday night we plan to go to Bizen in Great Barrington.) The hitch is that I am a vegetarian and would love some good options for me on the menu. Any suggestions? I have browsed the boards, but it seems that many places have gone out of business, etc. THANK YOU in advance!
