San Francisco restaurants

We will be in SF for 2 nights at the end of Jan. Which would you suggest for Vietnamese, Le Colonial or Slanted Door? We are also open to a high end Chinese. Do you have a good suggestion for Dim Sum at lunch?

We also need a great place for a Birthday dinner the next night and were thinking of La Folie or Gary Danko. I cannot stand truffles and La Folie seems to rely heavily on them. Is there any other good place we should try?

We're from New Orleans and go to Napa/Sonoma, but have by-passed SF for about they last 10 years or so. We will be staying around Union Square.

BTW how much weight did you all gain? Personally my husband and I could never keep up this pace.

Stella! or Restaurant August

I can't stand truffle oil and do not even want to sit at the same table with it. I would love to give my obscene decription of what it smells like, but it would get deleted. I think restaurants that use this to excess are a cop out for creative cooking.

Dress Code ??? - Cochon & jacquimo's

You're kidding! We went to Stella yesterday which I consider the best of high end restaurants and there were people in shorts! At J-I you'll find Jack walking around in Jams and I'm not sure that Cochon would turn anyone away. The lack of dress codes in white table cloth restaurants I find deplorable.

What is your fave Take Out option lately?

Go to Filipe's on S. Miro (across from Elio's) on Wednesday, which is 2 for 1 Margarita nite. Order 2 frozen's while waiting for your order to be filled (be sure to bring someone with you). This is a cute Mexican restaurant which is super inexpensive.

We did not like Redd at all. Some of our favorites have been the terrace at Auberge du Soliel and Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen. Bouchon is very nice and I'd do that rather than Ad Hoc

High English Tea in New Orleans?

The proper tea is "tea" or "afternoon tea". "High tea" is an inelegant affair served aroung 6 PM and consists mainly of leftovers.

Foodie trying to get my toddler interested in vegetables...need help!

Forgot to add to puree the stuff in a blender or food processer so the kiddies can't see the veggies. Trust me, they'll like it.

My favorite recipe when my children were young is "potage garbage". In other words, garbage soup. Clean out your vegetable bin with such stuff as potatoes, zucchini, onions, yellow squash, etc. Cook with chicken stock and milk. Can be served hot or cold.
