No Beer for Obama

And during the campaign, people griped that he was "out of touch" if he didn't down shots or eat greasy diner food like Hillary. Some people are just never happy.

Whatever. Man puts in 10 to 12 hours in the office everyday, and gets more briefings on weekends than Bush did. If he wants to drink one beer while watching his Bulls get beat, why can't he?

last dinner...what would it be?

Lasagna, preferably a good homemade version made with sausage.
A nice chopped vegetable and greens salad with a vinaigrette dressing.
Warm , fresh Italian bread
For dessert, a thick slice of cheesecake or a fresh, stuffed to order cannoli.

God, I'm hungry now!

Uses for buttermilk? Reposted

I'm going to add my vote for buttermilk pancakes or waffles. Make a batch of both or either. You can freeze the extra and toast them up for quick breakfasts. Eating a homemade waffle warmed in the oven instead of a typical rushed breakfast makes any weekday brighter.

Cheesecake Factory..I am being forced to go

I went to the one for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the lunch salad and pizza. The pizza was huge and delicious and easily split between two people or over two meals for one. The salad was large, crisp and fresh with a nice balsamic dressing.

Top Chef: Le Bernardin - Spoilers

Yes, but let's talk about the important things here. Like how freakin' adorable Eric Ripert is!

I know, I sound like Leah! No, I have a point, bear with me - I appreciate the way he interacted with the chefs throughout the episode. He was very polite and professorial, Such a wonderful change from the stereotype of the temperamental chef. I would like to think that he is that way with his staff as well.

What fast food do you eat rarely, but that first bite think "Wow, this is so good!"

Chick-Fil-A chicken strips and waffle fries. Love them but they do not love me back. I limit myself to a couple of times a year.

Catered Meals for New Parents of Twins

Hi there all:

A good friend of mine who lives on Long Island is expecting twins very soon. A couple of friends and I would like to pool our money and purchase some nice meals for her from a local caterer so she and her husband don't have to worry about cooking for the first few days after the babies come home.

The problem is, we live two states away and have no idea what caterers are good in that area.

Can anyone recommend a good caterer who might be willing to produce freezer friendly meals for new parents, in or around the Shirley area?

Thanks.

Top Chef: Le Bernardin - Spoilers

I saw that and thought it was cute especially since if I were Jamie, lesbian or not, that's where I would be! Fabio is just a big Italian Teddy Bear. How do you say cuddly in Italian?

I think you're right thst this season's chefs have more of a "bond" than some of the previous seasons. They seem to have more fun together in the downtime, too.

Side with Grilled Pork

Hi there. I've been invited to a friend's this weekend and asked to bring a side dish. They are serving grilled pork. I want to do something a little different than the standard potato or pasta salad. Anyone have any suggestions/recipes for a tasty summer side that will go well with grilled pork?

foods you didn't realize might have HFCS

Heard on a podcast from Lime.com today. Their consumer products expert predicted that with ethanol demand driving up the cost of corn and by extension, HFCS, we may start to see large food manufacturers switch back to sugar because it will be more cost effective.
He claims that Kraft has switched back to sugar in a handful of its products already. Anyone know if this (especially the latter) is true?

Top Chef - best cut ever (obviously a spoiler...)

That's what they would do on Project Runway, which I think has a similar set of producer.

Ratatouille

Interesting, having recently re-read KC, I was "hearing" Bourdain's cooking voice while watching this.

I loved this movie. Twenty minutes in I turned to my husband and said, "I love that rat."

what is the most useless gadget in your kitchen

Got a GF Grill from my parents, used it once and decided that it steamed food but came nowhere near grilling it. Gave it away.

I do use my slow cooker quite often but not for real cooking. It's a dream for serving on buffets and such. At holidays, I use it to heat and serve spiced cider when all my stove burners are typically occupied with food.

I agree that the sliding measuring spoon is useless.

What do you almost never go out for?

Steak, because my hubby makes a terrific steak at home.

Breakfast, because its cheaper and more fun at home and my 5 year old loves to help cook pancakes.

Tex-Mex/Mexican, because it's always disappointing.

Desperately Seeking Mushroom Lasagne Recipe

Third for this one. There are few people I would trust more with a lasagna recipe than Ina. She quite clearly has a love for the dish, given how many variations she has and how wonderful they all are.

How to Keep Breakfast Warm?

Is this for entertaining or for regular family breakfasts? For entertaining, I say stick with a strata or a frittata for your egg dish as both are delicious at room temp. Bacon is so much easier done on a broiler pan in the over and then you can even brush the strips with brown sugar or maple syrup and impress the heck out of everyone.

"Must Read" books for chowhounds?

Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl and Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation are my faves.

I'm in the middle of The Omnivore's Dilemma right now and am enjoying it.

Getting buttery taste without butter?

ITA, nothing replaces butter for taste and mouthfeel. Moreoever, as time goes by, we're finding out that many of the so-called butter subs are actually worse for you than butter. Transfat laden, hydrogenated margarines, etc. I say if you want get the best butter bang, use it where you will really taste it, such as in sauces, on good bread, etc.

Ugh, I've got to switch to whole wheat pasta!

I'm a great fan of ww pasta. I've tried Barilla Plus, Ronzoni, plus some local brands and been pleased.

Anyway, I agree that it tastes best with more assertive sauces. My five year old actually prefers "brown" pasta to regular these days. I think it's like with brown rice, once you get over your biases, you start to notice how much nuttier and fuller the whole grain stuff tastes.

Coconut Bread Pudding Recipe?

My heavens, that sounds terrific. And the rum! My sister will love that!

I'll pass this along right away.

I'll also pass along yours to my mom, QueenB. My mother might prefer that one because she has her own BP recipe that she is quite tied to. She'd probably want to start with that and sub the coconut milk in.

Coconut Bread Pudding Recipe?

My sister was recently raving about a coconut bread pudding recipe she recently had at a potluck event. She said it had great coconut flavor (maybe cream of coconut plus fresh grated?) and a nice firm texture. In the hubbub of the potluck, however, she never found the cook in order to ask for the recipe.

Does anyone here have a good recipe for a dish like this? She's got an dinner party coming up and she thinks this would be a nice dessert to serve with vanilla ice cream.

Thanks in advance.

Cheese course at restaurants-why bother if you can't do it right?

I would not mind getting a cheese on a cheese plate that I could get a good local cheese store, as long as it's combined in a thoughtful way with other cheeses. That's the whole point of a plate, right? The balance of flavors and textures? I'm trusting the chef's judgement on this and, in fact, am paying (usually dearly) for it. I'd like to get value both in terms of the actual product quality and in terms of the thought and skill that went into the selections.

And I have another pet peeve: flabby, stale crackers. I got these once on a cheese plate and I was so mad because the cheese itself was good but it was clear that no one had bothered to taste the crackers. Good selections marred by carelessness.
