What's a good dinner option near MoMA, midweek?

Need some chowhound help --

I'm hardly ever up in midtown - but I'm looking for a place for dinner, midweek, after the MoMA. Taking a friend who may not be totally comfortable in a stiff, white table cloth establishment, but we want good, tasty food. Doesn't need to be a scene. Entrees in the $26 - 36 range is ok. Cheaper is fine too, just don't know if it's findable in the 'hood.

I've been to the back bar area of the new Aquavit and that's my fall back. I've never the dining room there - thoughts? too formal?

Been to Cafe Gray, love it -- but only drinks and appetizers, menu seems a little pricey for what it is. But I'm open to dining there... with a strong reco.

Also, anyone been to the Modern?

Opinions are welcomed! And eagerly awaited. Thanks!

Blue Hill

(oops, this is Blue Hill at Stone Barns, didn't read carefully! Haven't been to the city location yet.)

I recommend the tasting menu. I was there in winter and it does change seasonally.
We had quite a few requirements at the table (I believe the whole table has to go in for it) But we had a vegetarian who ate fish, and a carnivore who eats everything BUT fish, and someone else who is allergic to all nuts. They were artfully able to accomodate us all. We had great service and a wonderful meal. I can wait to go back.

LES Brunch for a biggish group?

Anyone have recommendations for a weekend brunch? Schiller's can't take 10-12 which will be the group size. East Village okay too. Thanks!

Anyone tried "The House" yet?

Thanks, new to the boards (signed on today) and didn't see the previous thread!

I live in the Gramercy neighborhood and this is the newest addition, on the other side of Irving from Casa Mono. The space looks great. The Times gave it a mixed review. Anyone been?
