Toronto Foodies need Chicago Recommendations

Thanks so much for all your recommendations and feedback, it's greatly appreciated!

I booked us in for the Moto kitchen tour, which we're really looking forward to. What a great way to kickstart our vacation.

I like your breakfast suggestions, but we are driving in (not flying), so they may be a bit far from our hotel for a quick bite. I will definitely look into Publican, Aviary and Berkshire Room. Boka also looks delicious - ahhh, so many choices, so little time.

The Asian restaurants will have to go on the backburner, as my dining companions aren't huge into the genre (probably because they are tired of it from Toronto).

Again, thank you for all your input! I hear that Chicago is an ideal blend between Toronto and NYC (which I love), so I'm very much looking forward to this trip. Should anyone need Toronto recommendations in the future, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Toronto Foodies need Chicago Recommendations

Hello fellow foodies! We’re planning a girls’ road trip (for 4 of us) over Canadian Thanksgiving weekend (October 11 – 15th), and would love your suggestions/recommendations on our eating itinerary. Being from Toronto, we have a plethora of Italian and Asian restaurants readily available, so we want to explore some of Chicago’s finest options that we can’t get at home. Our budget is open, ranging from cheap and cheerful, to splurge meals. We will be staying at the Hotel Sax and will have access to a car as needed (however, we plan on taking cabs to most places). Also of note, some members of our group will be partaking in the marathon (whereas others such as myself, would much rather eat my way through the city) 

I look forward to your recommendations – please note that nothing is set in stone, other than our iNG dinner. Thanks in advance!

Friday (Arrival at Chicago)
--Dinner at iNG (we’re taking advantage of a $99 tasting menu deal via Travelzoo)

Saturday (Marathon Expo)
--Breakfast at Yolk
--Lunch ??
--Dinner at Lou Malnati’s

Sunday (Marathon)
--Breakfast ??
--Lunch ??
--Dinner at either North Pond or Acadia (leaning towards North Pond based on the scenery, but open to recommendations)
--Drinks at Pops for Champagne

Monday (Boat cruise and sightseeing)
--Brunch/Lunch at GT Oyster
--Dinner at either Mexique or Salpicon (which is better?)

Tuesday (Departing Chicago)
--Breakfast ??

Random Eats
--Bin 36 is apparently near or in our hotel, so we’ll definitely be stopping in at some point. Though by no means connoisseurs, we are huge wine/cheese lovers!

Downtown Pittsburgh Recommendations

Thanks for your reply. If you do end up venturing to Toronto, I'd be happy to provide some recommendations. We're pretty proud of our city and foodie scene as well :)

Downtown Pittsburgh Recommendations

Thank you! I actually shortlisted Penn Avenue Fish Company myself. I will check out your other suggestions.

Any idea of where I can get pierogies? I've heard Pittsburgh is well known for them!

Downtown Pittsburgh Recommendations

Hello!

My significant other and I are travelling to Pittsburgh (from Toronto) in about a month's time, and are looking for some great foodie recommendations. We're staying at the Wyndham Grand in downtown Pittsburgh. We'll have a car so that we can travel outwards for dinner, but I'd prefer breakfast/lunch to be within walking distance.

Last time we visited, we went to Monterey Bay Fish Grotto, Habitat, and Primanti Brothers.

We're pretty flexible on price (anything from a diner/dive to high end), and we love Perogies, Pizza, Seafood, Burgers, American and Fusion cuisine.

I look forward to your recommendations!

Thanks so much in advance.

Toronto Foodie Visits Manhattan - Recommendations Please!

Our trip is just a few weeks away, and we've now secured our hotel at Milford Plaza in Times Square. Any particular suggestions for notable eats within a few steps away? (I'm particularly interested in bagels, pizza, bars and anywhere else you'd recommend!)

Thanks again - I'll be finalizing our "eatinerary" very soon :)

Aquavit looks interesting! We definitely don't have any Nordic restaurants in Toronto that I know of. Those are good prices for tasting menus...and the 30% off doesn't hurt either. :)

There's a Momofuku opening up in Toronto in a few months, so perhaps I'll wait and try it then.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I never would have thought about trying Chinese in NYC since we have an abundance of it here, but now I think I might! :D

That's a great suggestion about the metro cards, I assume we can get them at any of the subway stations? I'll check out the restaurants you recommended as well - I like the idea of the splitting the pastas. :) Thanks!

Thanks, it looks great! Do you know if they have an a la carte menu or it is just tasting menus? I've noticed that a lot of NYC restos only offer the latter, whereas in Toronto, tasting menus are few and far between.

I'm not sure if we want to do omakase or a la carte - we're open to either option. I'd like to stay within the $100/pp range but if it's a bit more for an exceptional meal, then that's not a problem at all. (I just don't want to be spending $500 per meal.) We hear a lot about Nobu up here, is it worth the hype?

BTW do you know if there's a list somewhere of NYC Michelin star restos? I'd love to check out a few.

Wow, thank you SO much for all of your recommendations, I truly appreciate it. We will go through your list and build our itinerary from there. :) I forgot to mention that we're both big sushi fans, so if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears!

Thanks again.

Toronto Foodie Visits Manhattan - Recommendations Please!

Hi All,

My BF and I are visiting Manhattan in early March, and are looking for some dining suggestions. While we don't have our hotel booked yet, we're happy to travel anywhere that's a reasonable cab ride from the centre of the city.

I'm looking for suggestions for any meal (brunch/breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, etc). Our favourite types of cuisine include fusion, steak, Italian, gastropubs, pizza, etc. Our budget for dinner is preferably < $100 per person including tax and tip, but are open to spending more for any "once in a lifetime" meals.

Additionally, I found this deal on OpenTable which would allow us to get a 30% discount off our meal:
http://www.opentable.com/percent-off-...

Would you recommend us checking out any of these? (The only one I've been to is Kittichai, which I found to be quite enjoyable overall.

)

Thanks so much in advance - if you're ever in need of Toronto suggestions, I'm happy to return the favour :)

Yonge-Carlton area

Welcome to the area! I'm more or less in the same neighbourhood, so here are my recs:

W Burger Bar (www.wburgerbar.com) - This place gets really lively on weekends, so make sure to get a reservation.

Sushi Supreme (www.sushisupreme.ca/wellesley/index.html) - My fave sushi joint in the area. Excellent for takeout, plus you get 10% off if you pick-up and pay with cash.

I second Mercatto on College (www.mercatto.ca) - Great for casual Italian fare

Prix Fixe for Mother's Day

My family and I are going out for Mother's Day dinner on Saturday, March 7th (there are 8 of us), and are looking for a restaurant with a prix fixe option. Ideal price point would be $35pp or less, and can either be downtown, North York, or Markham. My grandparents will be there, so we probably want to aim for someplace more "traditional" as opposed to a trendy new spot. All cuisines are welcome.

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Yonge & Davisville - Lunch Recs Needed!

Just started a new job right at the intersection of Yonge & Davisville. Lunch options seem limited - any ideas, fellow 'hounds? I'm open to anything from cheap and cheerful to high-end client luncheons.

Thanks in advance!

Valentine's Day Restaurant

Try Le Paradis (http://www.leparadis.com/). This should fall within the $100 mark! Good luck.

Ceno

Thanks for both of your suggestions! I was definitely eyeing the truffled potatoes already (I love my carbs!) and was thinking of trying the equine tenderloin, as I've never had horse before. Will pass your recommends onto my date so that hopefully I can try more dishes ;)

They also have a special Valentine's Day deal (http://www.ceno.ca/ceno-restaurant-va...) for three courses for $65. However, the menu seems kind of limited and not necessarily a better deal than ordering a la carte. The latter may be the way to go!

Ceno

Has anyone been to Ceno in Yorkville? I've read quite a few good reviews, but none here on Chowhound. I'm looking forward to our dinner there this Saturday, and would appreciate your thoughts on what I should order!

Thanks!

Lee Lounge

Any news on whether Lee Lounge has officially opened as yet? There's a special Visa cardholders dinner event on Jan. 25th, but haven't heard anything else.

Quick Eats Near Hotel Omni Mont-Royal

I'm travelling to Montreal on business and only have one night to explore some local eats. I'm staying at the Hotel Omni Mont-Royal. Are there any great (and fairly cheap) eats within walking distance that you'd recommend? I'm particularly fond of poutine :) Am open to all types of cuisines except Asian/Indian (as I get my fair share of these in Toronto). Thanks for your suggestions!

Bay and Gerrard Lunch

Try Sushi Queen Izakaya at 665 Bay Street (Bay & Elm). I've been there for dinner and they have some pretty solid sushi at affordable prices.

Yup, the guy I spoke with said the old owners were successful but wanted to do something different (he did not elaborate on what that meant exactly).

Frank's Kitchen

Can you clarify with the Prix Fixe, whether or not there are choices (as with the 'Licious events), or is it a set menu?

Also, in lieu of a website, does anyone have a photo of the menu?

Restaurant Recommendation near Union Station(?)

I'd have to respectfully disagree. Every time I've been to Nota Bene, the noise level has been so high I could barely hear what my dining companion was saying!

How about Far Niente or Reds Bistro? Both are within walking distance of Union. While they are somewhat larger venues, I'm sure they could fit you into a more intimate nook upon request.

2010 closings

I tried to make reservations and was informed that the new place is called Lafayette Bistro. They will still have some crepes, although it's not going to be their focus. So sad that I never got to try the Creperie :(

Amazing dinner at George

Has anyone ordered off the a la carte menu at George recently? If so, what dishes would you recommend?

From nearly every review I've read, the tasting menu seems to be the only way to go.

It's been many years since I last went (when I myself ordered off the tasting menu), but I'm not sure if my dining counterpart will feel up to the adventure.

Thanks in advance!

Gilead Cafe serving dinner in new year

Just wanted to bump this post as I'll be taking my mom to Gilead Bistro this weekend for her birthday.

Any other recent dinner experiences from fellow hounds? What dishes are must-try?
