Santa Barbara Wine For My Birthday

It's on One Street facing the beache but who cares where it is. DO NOT go there. Unless ofcourse you want to be ignored for a while and then have crappy appetizers in a cacophonously loud and annoying setting!

Santa Barbara Wine For My Birthday

You are right. You are absolutely right. It was on the way, convenient, at the moment. But you are right, I should be punished for being such a fool. I deserve the torture I endured for venturing into this excuse for a Mexican restaurant.

Santa Barbara Wine For My Birthday

Headed up to SB to celebrate my birthday.
Had to pull off the road to relax and have a pre-dinner drink on our way to Los Olivos. Had drinks at El Torito in SB. The happy hour prices are great butr the chips, salsa and happy hour appetizers not even edible. What they serve purporting to be salsa probably comes from a jar that reads: Pace Picante! The service was AWFUL! When I inquired about getting a different salsa I was informed that the restaurant was out of any other salsa. Yes, A "Mexican" restaurant that uses some type of green or red salsa was out of this ingredient.

After regretting this pit stop and drowning my salsa sorrows with two cosmopolitans, we headed up to dinner at Hitching Post II. Couldn't get a table until 2 hours later. We were so hungry, we decided to pick something up and head for our hotel room.

The next morning we woke up pretty early and walked to Paula's Pancake House in Solvang. The breakfast was quite yummy. The think Sweadish pankcakes dusted with plenty of powdered sugar were excitingly delicious.

Drove up towards Los Olivos but had to stop at Blackjack Winery and had too much wine. Didn't think it was enough wine so we popped into Andrew Murray once we arrived in Los Olivos. Had a nice chat with the women at both wineries. Enjoyed the wine imensly.

Lunch at Los Olivos Cafe was a delight. We had some warm bread served with a lucsious herbed olive oil for dipping. I had the salmon, my boyfriend had another fish which came with crispy breaded green onions and was fantastic. best part of the meal had to be the flourless chocolate cake. I am still dreaming about it.

That evening, we finally caught a table at Hitching Post II. Everything was great. They serve a lot of food along with the dinner. We each had the filet mignon which was the most tender, juicy and delicious steak I have had in a while. I had a glass of their bien nacido syrah. The wine was fine, nothing spectacular.

Overall a very enjoyable weekend. Am excited to start drinking my great wine finds I brought back.

Help Me Leave LA With No Regrets!

Go to King Taco and have some sopes de asada. I'm not sure if you are into salsa but since you are leaving L.A. live a little and throw on thier fabulous red salsa. The experience of the flavors of the meat with the sope, the queso cotija and the sals it orgasmic!

Best Steak in Los Angeles?

I see nobody mentioned Morton's on this discussion on steak. Does that mean that this place is awful??? The last time I went (Burbank) it was o.k. but it wasn't spectacular. The service was bad. I had a $10.00 plate of wilted lettuce that lacked any flavor. Although their prices are pretty out ther!

Best Steak in Los Angeles?

Taylor's Steakhouse is great. It's a whole experience. This place is an anomally because of where it's located. It's right on the cusp of Koreatown but it's also bordered by an area that's infused with Mexicans from D.F. and Salvadoreans. There's a whole street vendor scene across the street that's almost carnivalesque esp. on the weekends. But then you walk into Taylor's and you get older couples, government business types and the occasional young couple out for a steak and a stiff drink. I always enjoy the whole feel and experience of the this old soul of a place.

The Original King Taco- review w/ photos

I LOVE KING TACO. The best thing to get is definately the sopes and tacos. The queso cotija with the cabbage and the red salsa make my tummy sing. The carnitas with lots of onion and cilantro are so good and so addictive I feel I have sinned each time I eat there because I enjoy it so much that it just seems wrong to covet something so much.

I am salivating as I write. As much as I love this place---can't say that I like the burritos and forget about those awful chips. It's just a matter of knowing what to order.

Red Wine under $10

I enjoy Columbia Crest Grand Estates cab. It's about 8 bucks. I also like Castle Rock Pinot for about 10.00. The Copolla Claret is great. That one's about 14 dollars.

The closest you can get to home made enchiladas is at a whole in the wall in East L.A.
on Olympic Blvd. It's called Mi India Bonita.

Everything is delicious and soooo reasonably priced.

Pinkberry-what's the deal? [moved from L.A. board]

I'm not even remotely interested in paying the exhorbitant prices this company is charging. I find it an assault on consumers when a company imposes this attitude that they can charge so much money for a cup of yogurt. O.K.-----I know I'm going to get a lot slack from many saying it's only $3 or $4 for it. But please, it's freaking yogurt!!! It sets a precedent when a company busts out like this and rips people off. Then you have all these followers saying oooooohhhh this thing is the best and everybody has to try it. I'm happy to note that I have never seen a line nor a crowd(like what I read was happening in Santa Monica) outside of the Studio City pb.

Poll: What restaurants do you eat in most often?

Taylor's Steakhouse (8th Street in Koreatown)-dark dining room, old school vibe. I feel like I've gone back in time at this place.
The Dresden -Los Feliz-great vibe, love the old school vibe, love the bitchy "mature" hostess.
Vermont-Los Feliz-love the atmosphere.
Mucho Mas -Burbank (Husband loves it cause it's the everybody knows your name kinda place for him)
Blair's -Silverlake- a new favorite. Like the gay, lesbian, artsy vibe. Great lighting, sparse dining room. Great service.
Don Felix- Hollywood- Not anymore. Got tired of dealing with the terrible service and terrible attitude of the owners who sit at the counter and watch T.V.
Sushi place in La Canada- Great sushir, great prices. Bad service, but they will make it up by giving you free stuff, which I am totally o.k. with because food is killer. Won't reveal the name because I don't want all you chowhounders to inundate the place and make the wait longer for me and my man.

whats everyones fave mexican restaurant??

RE: ajbinla:
I wholeheartedly agree with you about these so called mexican food joints like Don Cuco's and El Coyote. THEY ARE NOT MEXICAN FOOD and it is very annoying when they bring out their bowl of salsa which tastes like ketchup. La Cabanita in Montrose is very good. They make a kick ass version of chiles enogada(just like in Like Water For Chocolate.

whats everyones fave mexican restaurant??

Mi India Bonita in East L.A. A family owned operation with the most delicious, homemade food you can have outside of mom's kitchen. So those of you who love all that El Torito and Acapulco type mexican food with their ketchup style "Pace Picante" salsa need not try it.

What's your "bedtime snack"?

Peanut butter on Granny Smiths. I love the salty sweetness of the PB w/ the tartness of the apples. Also, cottage cheese on Ruffles.

Santa Barbara

How far are you willing to travel? The Los Olivos Cafe is great. We had a yummy dinner in a hip and pretty intimate setting even though the place was pretty packed with locals. The staff was very attentive and knowledgeable.
