In Seattle ONE DAY!

We will be there Wednesday July 2nd. We are thinking now we will get some meats to take with us to our cousins' house the next day (we will be traveling south below Olympia). That way we can get the Salumi experience, share it with our foodie family, and get in yet another restaurant. We are hoping that after all this we can still make the weight limit coming home on the airplane! I have printed out your recs and will sort through them soon. Thanks so much!

In Seattle ONE DAY!

My very favorite fish taco. Get either the Seabass if they have it (they did not have it last wek) or salmon. They will be smokey, rich and wonderfully fresh. Make sure to say yes to the avocado.
About Seattle, how is Tango? And I thought Salumi cured meats for lunch. I had considered on of the Douglas restaurants, but there seemd to be a lot of not so geat talk about them all on CH. Is there a reason lamb is big in Seattle?

In Seattle ONE DAY!

Squeezing in just 1 day in Seattle. Looking for breakfast, lunch and dinner at places we can't find anywhere else. Unique to Seattle. As a side, looking for unique small local artisan shops.

San Diego Chocolatiers?

I just found Eclipse Chocolat, on El Cajon Blvd (2200 or so). Will is fabuolus! A real artist. His chocolate is slightl;y higher end than Chao, a bit more expensive as well. His truffles and fabulous, but so is everything else in his shop. I ate a cookie that was meringue with lots of chewy dark chocolate in it. He serves deseert plates, some sanwiches, Calabria coffee. What more could you ask for? Try him!

Updated Santa Cruz restaurant reviews/opinions, please!

I can't find my original post asking for SC restaurants, but we just got back and I have a short report.
Our first night there, we were wandering downtown and happened upon a restaurant tasting event where downtown restaurants had tables in the middle of the street. There were 2 fantastic items. A green papaya salad made by a caterer whose name I didn't get (sorry!) and a truffle ,made by a new restauranteur, 515. It was fantastic. So we went there for dinner the next night and it was very good. Not killer fantastic. We have a carmalized onion soup that was the best thing we had! I had a steak that I would not have again. Game hen was swimming in sauce, and a lamb shank that was excellent! We shared a dessert - an upside down pear cake that was also great! They were very crowded, which was nice to see. Not inexpensive, but our dinner did not break the bank, either. Their address is 515 Cedar. The owner was once vegan, so her vegetarian stuff is her focus, though she has a co-chef whose focus is meats. The owner also is the pastry chef.
Cafe Brazil breakfast did not disappoint, but the treat was the fallafel joint on Mission. Next door to that is a chocolate place so I bought a bunch of small packages of different flavored dark chocolates to bring back as gifts and they were wonderful!
We came back thinking that Santa Cruz restaurants really focus on healthy, vegan, organic (that's was the majority of what we tasted Thurday night at the downtown event), not so much on high end gourmet. The ethnic foods were really wonderful!

3 nights in Santa Cruz

Need rec's for all meals. Spending 3 nights in Santa Cruz visiting student son. He works at Lulu's so coffee and pastries for at least 1 day are decided. But lunchs, dinners and a great breakast place are needed. One meal may include lots of 20-somethings, so inexpensive would be welcome for that meal! The other meals looking for great food, price a lesser issue.

Seasons 142 (SD)

We went with friend during their opening promotion (buy one dinner, get another free) and were impressed with some of the food. The server was knowledgeable as well. It is the same investor group as Brazil on the Hill, but different chef and concept. They seem very eager to please

South Beach Grille Tacos--Ehh...

My absolute favorite in SD is at Blue Water Grill on India. Fish is fresh, grilled, and the taco is stuffed wuth perfectly balanced flavors and textures. They ask if you want avocado - say yes. Not at all like the original Rubios taco, and probably not very authenic to those on the pier in Ensensada. But yummy - and a great value. They are big!

Great espresso in SD?

I am a Caffe Calabria fan for their lattes. They really know how to pull shots, unlike other coffee places! They train their baristas very seriously. I don't drink espresso, but I have heard it's excellent. They roast daily and have "cuppings daily" to critique their own roasting

lunch in santa cruz suggestions

I am back from Santa Cruz and for lunch we went to a small downtown restaurant that was close to where we were when we got hungry (not memorable) but for dinner we went to O'Mei Chinese food, a very old time Chinese restauant on Mission Street in a small strip mall.
The food was not cheap, but it was supurb! Everything we had was terrific. Twice cooked pork was a tad too salty, but everthing else was great. The most memorable dish was tofu with dates. Sounds weird but was first rate. The service was very nice. They greeted us out by bringing 8 small plates of starters that if we liked, we could just put on the tabel (for $3 each) and send the rest back. Wonderful edemame, green beans that were like the green bean and pork dish you see in some Hong Kong places, but it was actually vegetarian, and other wonderful looking dishes. We had a 3 year old and 5 year old with us, a vegetarian and 2 meat/seafood eaters. So we had a variety of dishes, all good.
The service was good - and they had a 15% service charge that they expalined on the back of the menu, went 2/3 to the chefs and 1/3 to the servers. It was a long explanation about not raising their prices, but doing this because in most restaurants the cooks are not able to be paid well enough to stick around after they reach high levels. Apparently it's illegal for servers to pool their tips with cooks. So they encourage patrons to tip 5-10% on top of the service charge if they liked the service. We did and we did, hapily, and I really enjoyed the lengthy explanation. I know Santa Cruz is a politically active place, but this place has apparently been there forever, and was not the kind of place one would expect to be this politically forward. It was very nice!

Has anyone been to Ritual Tavern yet? (SD)

I wish I had the detailed food memory that lots of you posters do! We were there about 5 weeks ago and some of our meal as good, none of it particularly memorable (especially for my brain!) except the gumbo was delicious! The lamb sirloin was good, and thankfully cooked med rare to perfection. The shortbread dessert was good, the porter shake was the favorite of my 21 year old son.
We thought for the neighborhood bar atmosphere and the portions, the prices were a bit high, and when we went there (a month after opening) was no coffee, although apparently the owner was out buying French Press pots that evening. When I asked what the coffee was going to be the server mentioned some roaster unfamiliar to me, and I asked why not Cafe Calabria since they are a neighbor and the best in SD. The server mentioned price (huh?) and the owner, when I emailed her, said she didnt know Calabria did wholesale coffee (huh?)
When we left, there were 6 employees (we counted them) standing around the kitchen pass through chatting about something, and not a one took it upon him or herself to walk over to the door and say bye, hope you come back, hope you enjoyed the meal, or anything like that. We were very surprised and a bit put off by that.
We have not been back because of those reasons and the fact that there are so many new places to try in SD, it has not been a priority.
I will say that we were excited to find a neighborhood joint that we might be a regular at, and were disappointed because it didn't have that calling for us, but then found Buds which has! We live in Mission Hills, and both are what we call neighborhood. Buds is delicious, very affordable, and so pleasant to be at! And their coffee (with just a touch of chickory) is great! But that's another whole conversation.

Big Bear Update (Summer '07)

A year ago we had absolutely fabulous meals at the Mambo Cafe (think that was the name...I know Mambo was in it) right on BBBlvd. Chef / part owner was from LA area I think and landed in BB. Sweet potato sdie dish that knocked our socks off. But go for dinner when he's there. Better than lunch when he's not.

San Diego-Little Italy

I like Blue Crab for inexpensive fresh fish (at the N end of Little Italy, bordering on Old Town). I went with a friend last week and we spilt a salad with 2 big pieces of grilled wild salmon and had 2 fish tacos with Sea Bass. The tacos had a great cabbage mix, the salad greens were also fresh and wonderful, the fish was very fresh and succulent, and all for $25!
