Driving me crazy!

Ryland Inn?

Dinner in Savannah/lunch in Beaufort

Sapphire Grill was fabulous when we were there two years ago (and the year before that), and I had actually come online to see wha the 'hounds had to say before I made the reservation for when we come back through next month. I think this is the one I'm most looking forward to.

We found Local 11 Ten to be very good but loud, but we may be hypersensitive to that. The Pink House and Elizabeth's are both consistently excellent, and both on the short list for our trip this year, though the Pink House will be room service the night we arrive as we stay at the hotel across the street.

We haven't been to Noble Fare but that may have just made it onto my short list. I needed one more place. Thanks!

elements in Princeton, at the Chef's table in the kitchen

Chef's table???

neither the Pluckemin Inn nor Ninety Acres have a Chef's Table, much to my dismay on both counts...

Ninety Acres does have "Bring Me Food" their variation on a tasting menu, where you are presented with a list of ingredients from which your courses will be created. this is not served in the main dining room but in the smaller area adjacent to the kitchen. We enjoyed it the one time we had BMF and we certainly prefer sitting in that space as it's a bit quieter than the main room.

Pluckemin Inn - What's Going On?

We finally made it back to the Pluckemin Inn for a long overdue dinner since the new chef took over. We'd been to the Tavern and come in for lunch, but had not been back for dinner until tonight.

I'd been wanting to go back for a couple of reasons- I've been dying to try Chef Juan Jose Cuevas' food and they also put my favorite summer cocktail, the Watermelon Red Hot, back on the menu. Yum! (I had two tonight.) After chatting at the bar for a few minutes and ordering our cocktails the hostess took us to our table. Upon perusing the menu for a bit, the Husband and I come to a conclusion- it's unquestionably tomato season. A good thing for me, not so good for him. Fortunately, they don't mind serving much of the tavern menu in the dining room so we weren't worried about filling in some holes.

The amuse buche was a tomato/vegetable water which was very tasty, just as light and cleansing as you would expect from something that was probably picked from the garden mere hours earlier. The only slip up tonight was the service. I ordered three courses, the Husband two, and they brought both of my starters out first, without bringing either of his. I started with the NJ heirloom tomato salad, basil, clear melon broth and tomato sorbet. There were about 5 or 6 different varieties of tomatoes with fresh basil leaves in the broth and a scoop of the tomato sorbet. The tomato salad was incredible but the tomato sorbet was just outrageous. I can't really describe what it was like but I just wanted more, it was really remarkable. I then had the grilled day boat sea scallops, with watermelon, chilis, mache, Castel Vetrano olives. Personally, I prefer my scallops with a bit more of a sear than these had, but that's just me (and the Husband!) but these were still quite tasty. The sauce had a bit of a kick to it. I didn't see any olives and thought it had grapefruit, but I could be mistaken.

The Husband finally got his risotto, organic zucchini risotto with parmesan, sot-l'y-laisse & squash blossom tempura. We learned today that sot-l'y-laisse is "chicken oysters". I'm still not quite sure what -that- is, but it was two very tasty little morsels. The squash blossom wasn't a big poofy piece as you often see, it seemed like this was split in half so it fried flat.

The Husband also got a crab cake, a consistently tasty treat from the Tavern menu. The tempura asparagus that came with it was apparently so tasty I never got a piece! (And that says something for someone who doesn't really like vegetables.) I had the John Dory, fennel, preserved tomato, white eggplant caviar & ratatouille jus. I didn't taste the fennel in it, but it was still tasty. The eggplant caviar was creamy and didn't have the seedy texture you sometimes get with eggplant.

We didn't get dessert, but two small chocolate chip cookies (still and consistently some of the best we've had) and two coconute macaroons were delivered with the check.

All in all, a delightful dinner. We'll definitely be back to the Plucky with the new chef at the helm, just after tomato season.

private room for 50-60. walking distance to 23rd and 7th/8th?

Yes, it is Dallas BBQ that I was referring to. The only thing good about it was the massive drinks.

We are definitely open to various cuisines, with no specific preferences. We are trying to keep the costs reasonable since everyone will be paying their own way, so $20-30 per person, food only.

It does not need to be a sit down dinner but there needs to be places for people to sit.

Thanks, all! Greatly appreciated.

private room for 50-60. walking distance to 23rd and 7th/8th?

Hi, 'hounds!

I'm looking for a private room or venue for 50-60 people on a Saturday night in July. We need to be walking distance to 23rd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, where we'll end up around 11-11:30. Must have both food and drink.

BBQ, the convenient choice is both too loud and the food was abysmal last time we tried it. Food does not need to be fancy, but hopefully more than just barely edible.

I'm reaching out to East of Eighth to see what they can accommodate but that's all I know of offhand, and my Google-fu has not gotten me very far.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Many thanks!

Veg/Vegan in San Mateo or nearby?

Two of my dearest friends are heading out to San Mateo for business for a week. One vegetarian, one vegan. No other restrictions. Some meals will be on their dime, some will be on the expense account. They will have a rental car so some travel is an option as well.

I've searched the boards and other places and have come up with a number of options in SF, but fewer in San Mateo.

So far, I've got Annapoorna in San Mateo.

In SF, I have Cafe Gratitude, Greens, Minako, Mekong and Herbivore. Ubuntu in Napa is on the list as well.

I'll also giving them a link to this thread,
http://www.chowhound.com/topics/493829, for more SF based choices.

Any other suggestions for San Mateo? I don't know how far it is from SF, so I am trying to find them a couple of after-work options that don't require too much travel.

My sincere thanks for any recs you can provide!

Hungarian Festival- New Brunswick

I've been seeing the signs by the side of the road and finally got a chance to catch most of the details.

It is this Saturday, June 7 on Somerset Street in New Brunswick. From 11-7, I believe, though I could be wrong on the end time.

Has anyone been in previous years? Is it worth going? I'm only really interested in the food as I haven't been able to find anything in the area.

And does anyone know exactly WHERE on Somerset St it is? That part I didn't see.

Thanks,
Naomi

In Lieu of Ryland Inn

seconding the Pluckemin Inn. you can't go wrong there.

Restaurants similar to Blue Hill at Stone Barns

The Ryland Inn has been closed since Feb. Expected to reopen in Spring 08. We hope.

Exchange Place eats

It's not a complete waste-land, but it's not great, either.

There's Fatburger in one of the Harborside buildings.
Marker's restaurant in another Harborside building isn't terrible but the service can be. No idea about their to-go.
Honshu, upstairs from the Flamingo (aka Dirty Birdy) on Greene and Montgomery is decent sushi. No idea about the Flamingo itself. Has a lunch special.
Milanos on Montgomery (I think) just past Greene away from the water, does really good heros and chicken parm type stuff. The line can be down the block, though, but you can make two meals from one (or share which is what we do)
95 Greene has both a cafeteria and restaurant.
Grand Banks- chinese/japanese. Can be a wait for delivery at lunch time but they are pretty quick if you go to pick it up. Has a lunch special.
Taqueria- never eaten there but VERY well reviewed in the office and elsewhere.
Wild Fusion- asian and sushi. has a lunch special

Definitely not the same as any of the NYC carts. Been here two years and I still miss them!

45 South- Savannah?

Is 45 South, next to the Pirate's House, closed? Their website it up but their phone doesn't ring, or more accurately rings with that off-the-hook tone. Can't find them on OpenTable.

The Hubby and I are planning a trip down at the end of the month and had been looking forward to eating there. If they -are- closed, does anyone have any recommendations for other places to dine. We've done Elizabeth's and the Pink House on several previous trips as well as 700 Drayton. We found the Sapphire Grill on our last trip and are looking forward to going back this time.

Thanks!

Anyone Had David Drakes Garden Menu?

We've been to the Garden several times, though none for lunch, and it has never been really crowded even on a Friday or Saturday night. My suspicion is that you will not need a reservation, but it never hurts to ask.

The Garden menu consists of all the apps from the regular menu plus the burger (which is very tasty) and an open faced bbq duck sandwich with figs which is very very yummy. Almost reason enough for me to eat in the Garden instead of inside!

The atmosphere is just lovely, with even a couple of tables on the lower half of the garden if you'd like a little more privacy.

Amish food market

There's the PA Dutch Market on Rt. 27 in Kingston, near Princeton. I don't know how it compares to Medford, as I've never been, but this one has meats, poultry, dairy, fruits & veggies, prepared foods, yummy desserts, and a pork roast on the last Saturday of the month. Yum!

They are looking towards an early August opening.

Romantic Restaurant in Savannah?

The Hubby and I just got back from several days in Savannah.

You can't go wrong at the Pink House. We didn't eat there this time, simply because it didn't work with our schedule, but it has been a staple of ours for years.

Elizabeths was as wonderful this trip as it was last year. Ask if you can get one of the corner booths which are much more cozy than the regular tables.

This year we also ate at Sapphire Grill for the first time and it has certainly earned a place on our short list! If you can, ask them for the table on the third floor that is almost in an alcove. That's where we sat and it certainly had a much more cozy ambiance to it than a regular table. Plus the food was fabulous and the chocolate martinis were out of this world.

We also ate several meals at 700 Drayton, as we stayed at the Mansion on Forsyth Park. We cannot recommend, either the restaurant or the hotel, highly enough! The service was outstanding and the food was absolutley delicious. One night we both ordered the filet special, mine medium rare and his medium well. Both were perfectly done. Ask for a table in the small room behind the stairs- has only 4 tables and seemed much more romantic than their other sections.

I don't know about the Sapphire Grill but all the others certainly have history. All have ambiance and great food. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them!!

Looking for Good Butcher in Central Jersey

have you tried the PA Dutch Farmers Market on Route 27 in Kingston? Only open Th-F-Sat. Haven't been able to buy meat or poultry anywhere else since I started going there.

Pig Roast for 65th Birthday in Rockland. Help!

seconding the recommendation for Fink's. I haven't tasted his work since he moved to NY (and I moved to S Jersey) but the man knows his stuff. the sides are totally worth it, too!
