father's office

I finally went there Tuesday night about 6:30pm. Must have hit it just right, no wait outside, but it was crowded inside. Staff was very friendly, explained the unique process... order food at the bar and snag a seat whenever it becomes available.

We ordered:
- The office burger: yes, it lives up to all the hype, no ketchup needed. wonderfully complex flavors. I asked for it well done, it came back well done.
- Regular fries - very good, and the aioli sauce was divine
- spanish mushrooms - yummy
- beet salad - very large portion; partner had it for entree. Well done!

and now the beers:
- I asked for a 'good heff' - I do not know what brand I received, but it was very nice.
- partner got the Craftsman White Sage - oh - my - god... this was amazing.

Anyone know where I can buy Craftsman beer?????

Overall, we both agreed that we would return. Maybe do takeout, as it is a very small and noisy place. It's a typical westside 'scene', but the food and drink make it worth it, as long as you are prepared for the experience.

lastly, the burger was very big - I ate half and took half home. Reheated the next day in the oven (yes, bun and all) for 15 mins - was great!

Thai Boom -- Good Lunch

We parked in the back lot, and there is a sign above the back door: "Thai Boom Entrance" - thus, we walked through. No wagging fingers...

Thai Boom -- Good Lunch

Based on reviews, we tried this place, hoping for a great hidden find. Was very disappointed. Food was just okay, nothing to write home about. Partner ordered asparagus tofu (based on recommendation by waiter) and I got the beef yellow curry. Her dish was bland, no flavor. Mine was OK, again - nothing special. Thai iced tea was good - standard fare.

On the way out (through the kitchen), we spotted a HUGE container of meat tenderizer. Hmmmmmmmmm...

For those looking for SOLIDLY GOOD Thai (vegan, to boot) - try Vegan Glory on Orlando and Beverly: http://www.veganglory.com/

Still looking for some AMAZING Thai on the westside, near Mar Vista / Palms. Anyone???

Anyone been to Wilson recently?

Yes... VERY disappointed. My partner and I wanted to try this new place based on reviews here and other boards. We went there for lunch yesterday after enjoying the Culver City Art Walk. It was a bit crowded, and maybe that affected the service... however:

- service was REALLY bad. Slow, inattentive. Several patrons nearby had to go and find the waiter to order, get their bill, etc.
- paid $2 each for Arnold Palmers, nobody ever came by to refll...
- we asked for a spoon, was curtly told by the waiter "one minute"
- had to ask for bread... arrived with no butter, oil/vinegar, etc

I ordered the chuck burger with short rib chili. So salty I could barely eat it... left about 1/2 on the plate, was never asked by the waiter if the food was OK.

Partner ordered pasta with almonds, tomatoes and garlic. Boring, not flavorful. So easy, how could this dish be so bland???

Too expensive, lousy service. We will NOT be going back.

Still searching for that elusive great LA foodspot.

Mmmmm... good coffee!

After going through phases with Starbucks, Peet's, and miscellaneous small brand organic/fair trade/fancy brands, a friend recommended Trader Joe's French. I am not typically a fan of French (too strong), but this stuff is GOOD! Better yet, it's cheap ($4.99 for the regular can, $6.99 for the organic / fair trade version).

Ahhh.. no more extra trips to an overpriced coffeehouse to buy my home brew.

Meltdown in Culver City

Oh wow! I just looked at the menu and am salivating! Looks great! Can't wait...

Imitation Pinkberry

Yes! I love Yoku Yoku on Sepulveda & Palms in West LA. A tad more expensive than Pinkberry, (I know - it's already too much, really) but better taste and smoother texture.

Mmmmm... good cookies!

I was having a sugar craving yesterday down in Santa Monica. Ducked into the nearby Famima! and tried their 2-pack of macadamia nut cookies. Very tasty! $1.29 for 2 good size cookies, and all natural ingredients - sugar, eggs, flour, salt, etc.

Yum.

dainties cupcakes

Based on recommendations here, we ordered a variety (vanilla, raspberry, mint, tiramisu) for a baby shower yesterday. They were a HUGE hit! The owner was very friendly and helpful, and the flavors were delicate and authentic. I much prefer these to the over hyped Sprinkles.

Stone Fire Pizza Co.

Went there last night - was VERY impressed. Pizza was great, service excellent. Was an excellent option for 3 meat-eaters and 3 vegans. All were happy.

Also - 5-7pm is happy hour (I think every night) - 50% off. The group ate, drank lots of beer, all for under $100. I'll be going back soon! :)

Mondo Gelato's tart yogurt better than pinkberry

I will check it out -sounds good. I was also underwhelmed by P-Berry; have since fallen in LOVE with Yoku Yoku on Sepulveda and Palms - a bit sweeter, and much smoother.

Yoku Yoku - Froyo & Gelato (Westside Village)

I LOVE this place... went to Pinkberry. Was a bit underwhelmed and the staff was unfriendly. Yoku Yoku is creamier, a bit less tart, and totally delicious! I had the italian yogurt, no toppings. I think I am going to be addicted. YUM YUM YUM!
