Culver City- coffee for business meeting

Downtown Culver City?
Free 2 hour parking in the public garages.
Akasha has a separate cafe serving Intelligentsia coffee.
L'Epicerie may work too.

Gielina, the emperor's new clothes

I have never had a bad experience ar Gjelina (food or atitude wise.)
I have to say I am a fan of the pizzas though I always order the guanciale. It's my favorite. As for the veggies, I like them but don't think they are all that "healthy". Lots of olive oil and/or butter. mmm

Spago Tasting Menu (5 course) Great food but Lacking Service

I concur. Service has always been excellent when dining there with no regard for $$ spent.
I think it is the luck of the draw as to WHICH server you end up with.
If you know names (positive and negative) use them. The turnover rate there is not that high as I recognize servers when I visit.

Costa Mesa or Newport Beach Help

I'm in the same boat. I was looking at the restaurants in South Coast Plaza since they are walking distance from my hotel: Mastros or Seasons 52 or Marche Moderne.

Great food and mixologists on the Westside?

I have only had the happy hour food there in the lounge. So yes, do tell how the food is.
There are so many seating areas, but the actual bar looks like a nice option (versus the tables inside).

Another positive Lukshon review

A+
The most memorable aspect of the experience is the staff. This place is so tightly run: so impressive (especially after the service negative from Waterloo and City a few nights ago).
This, by no means takes away from the food. It is very refreshing to be in a place that embraces bold, well used flavors.

Hot and sour gimlet: a slow burner. Great starter drink.
This night, DH and I ordered the
-mackerel
-stuffed squid
-mussels (the scotch drink came about then. Held it's own against the mussel broth)
-black rice
-brussel sprouts
-ended with the Gruner Veltliner (went well with dessert)

The mussels were the star and I would order the extra jasmine rice to sop up the leftover sauce. Think of THE best green curry ever and you might be close.
The only complaint was from DH about the greasiness of the brussel sprouts. I didn't have too many so I didn't have the same problem.
Desserts were great and the perfect size.

Sitting at the kitchen counter was fun. The kitchen is a whirlwind of well choreographed movement.

Everyone, from the staff to the clientele just seemed happy to be there.
I can't wait to return.

I wanted to love Waterloo and City....

But alas, like is the better term.
Dined here on Saturday evening with DH and another couple. Service was prompt with water and greetings quick to appear. After about 5 minutes the waiter returned and seeing we were not quite ready to order informed us that when we do order, we should order everything we wanted at that time as the restaurant was fully booked that night.
So much for relaxing...

For starters, we ended up ordering
-the shrimp and squash blossom fritters
-tuna tartare with a fried, tuna stuffed pepper
-beets
-liver and foie mousse

Everything was OK. Nothing was really memorable. Even the mousse was a bit bland. My favorite part of that dish was the cornichon that added a pop of flavor.

Under pressure, I ordered the scallops with ravioli in pea puree. Again, not so great. The portions are big but the puree was a tad too sweet and the scallops were not seared properly.
My husbands mushroom pasta was much tastier.

We ordered a side of rapini but it looked and tasted as if it were either microwaved or boiled. Either way, it was cold and mushy.

We were allowed to order more drinks after the warning and was a bit surprised we were allowed to see a dessert menu. The sticky toffee pudding was good.

My friend who had also been looking forward to trying the place was pretty disappointed in her gnocchi and the whole experience in general.

The place is huge and I won't write it off just yet.

Public Kitchen & Bar….my perfect restaurant

I was there on Wednesday and despite the feeling that the restaurant wasn't really ready for business, I had a positive experience.
First off, I had called earlier in the day and was told the restaurant opened at 5:30. When I called to confirm at 5:15, the hostess had to check since she thought it opened at 6. It was indeed 5:30 and as we waited to be seated, another employee kept the hostess occupied by telling her who had breaks, when.
It seemed to be an over riding theme as 1/4 way through our service, our server went on break.
There were a few other tables but it was clear, the restaurant was still in training/prep mode.
Boxes being emptied in site and sound of the dining room, lots of milling around by employees, ordering beer only to be told the tap wasn't hooked up yet, and no bread plates when bread was served. I know that this is customary in Italian restaurants, but usually, the table linen is new for each service.
At Public Kitchen, the table is a marble top and who knows what they use to clean it.
I noticed another table had bread plates so thought it odd, we did not.

Anyway, after quite a long wait for my cocktail (the server did apologize), I have to say is was delicious (the Alexandra). I opted for three small plates and wow, they were good.
-Sweetbreads (the sauce was a bit sweet and the water chestnuts threw me off a bit but I finished it off)
-Gnudi (light and fluffy, seasoned well and the bacon was amazing)
-Oxtail galette (my favorite. I could've eaten a few of these.)
My dining partners went for the fish special (can't recall) and the roast chicken. They were happy too.
For some reason, I assumed the butterscotch and chocolate pudding was a melded dessert but were separate servings. The butterscotch was better IMO, the sea salt elevating the flavor.

I can't wait to go back when all the kinks have been ironed out because the food is great, the ambiance is great (though I can imagine it will be very loud at max cap) and the staff is friendly.

Animal

Was there after the Decemberists concert (so after midnight) and b/w me and my hubby ordered the chopped liver toast, hamachi, uni, octopus, a salad(can't remember which) and the sticky toffe pudding. I really liked the octopus, especially the chorizo it is served with.
I had the willpower not to order the foie (biscuit) since I love it and instead went with the liver toast. I have to say it was amazing. And for $3, one would assume it was ok, but I could not stop talking about it. Apparently, they use duck (fat or rlllette) and top it with sweet, sauteed onions.
I could eat several.
The uni dish was super fresh and tasty but very, very small.

Private Chef for Birthday Party

I hired HeirloomLA for two parties last summer, one sit down for 8 and another party for 25+ and they were amazing. Granted this was before all the PR they have recently gotten but they were fantastic and the food was amazing. They were amenable to budget requirements with me so might be worth a shot.

Thoughts on DineLA2011

I had the menu at Joes and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Di Stefano Buratta Panna & Beet Salad, Jamon Iberico De Bellota Upland Cress, Aged Balsamic, Leek Vinaigrette
to start. It was a pretty plating and everything worked together.
My entree was the grilled Fijiian Escolar, Local Squid, Crisp Pork Belly Parnip Puree, Fuyu Persimmon, Okinawan Potato, Citrus Vinaigrette though they subbed albacore for the escolar.
When they put down the pork tenderloin dish instead, I had second thoughts. I should have kept the mistaken dish since it looked much more interesting than the fish.

The plating of the fish was fish on one side and all the other bits on the other. It looked very haphazard and a bit sad. The fish was moist but the medley just didn't work. It sounded do much more interesting on paper. That said, it was good but not up to pay with other Joe Miller dinners I've had.

Dessert was the Salted Caramel Panna Cotta-Sticky Toffee Cake, Brown Butter Caramel, Whipped Cream. Small but delicious. Compared to the regular dessert our table ordered, it looked like a kids portion but I am not a huge dessert person so it was fine.

All in all, I feel it was a good deal and service (besides the entree mix-up) was good.

where do you buy dried pasta? and what kind?

My favorite pasta, bar none is Spinosi from Guidi. At $8 a box (4 servings) it is not cheap but if you don't eat pasta alot (I do, oink oink) it's a nice treat. I prefer the papardelle and taglionini myself.
