Restaurant rec for LES???
Anything in the neighborhood of New York Theatre Workshop? Celebrating a birthday, would prefer Italian.
In Search of Classic Onion Soup
I love the onion soup at EnoTerra in Kingston, NJ but it isn't that traditional. The best traditional onion soup I've had recently is at Iron Hill brewery in West Chester, PA, not far from the NJ border. They make it with beer, and my kids love it.

Del Posto gets 4 stars
I love this board, chowhounders definitely have their opinions!
I loved EMP when I went, haven't been in awhile. I think I would try Del Posto or EMP for that special dinner. Babbo is my #1 but haven't been in awhile. The opinions of S.S. intrigue me as he went wild over Torrisi Italian Speciatlies, which seems to have gotten panned a fair amount on the web.

Some nice Chinatown recs, thanks grayelf! We ate at Vij's last night, and we had a delightful dinner/experience. We arrived at 5:30 and there was a huge line, but we sat outside talking with friendly Canadians, ordered drinks and got free passed hors d'oeuvres. Vij's wife herself came over to chat with us. It was like a cocktail party.
Highly recommend the lamb lollipops, short ribs and pork/baby back ribs. Also got the curried chicken liver and jackfruit in black curry and garam masala. Needless to say, we were stuffed.
Night market tonight!
Breakfast in West End/downtown Vancouver
Been to Joe's Grill and La Bretagne Creperie and they were both great, thanks for the suggestions! We will probably be skipping breakfast some days, we're only eating 2 meals per day and will probably do lunch and dinner with a light breakfast from now on.
The breakfast sausage here tastes a lot like English bangers, a favorite of the family! What a great city for food.
Thanks for all the great suggestions!

So far we've eaten at La Quercia and Fish House at Stanley Park. We loved La Quercia, ordered the price fixe la familia dining and received lots of delicious items: beef carpacio, roasted peppers stuffed with tuna, ravioli ottoni (absolutely delicious: open face ravioli with beet greens, ricotta and the most yummy poached organic egg), braised beef cheeks and an assortment of desserts. It wasn't too much food and the son joined in and ate everything.
The Fish House was just okay. I ordered clam chowder, which was rather feeble, the son and husband got the plank-grilled mussles, which were ten times better, our sable dishes were supposed to come with a sticky chili glaze but if it was there, we didn't taste it. The son got the 4 oz salmon, he thought it was all right but wasn't overwhelmed. We watched the table in front of us sit there for 45 minutes w/o the waiter coming over, and they were not pleased. Seems overpriced for what we received. Can't recommend. Being in Stanley Park, right there would be a concern about tourist traps.
We also had dimsum at Floata, which was great and terrifically cheap. Maybe we'll stick close to Chinatown. It was about a third of the cost in the Northeast!

Thanks for all the recs, guys! Think we'll try the creperie place since my son likes crepes, but that's good news about the hotel and the other recs.

Looking for a decent breakfast place in the neighborhood of our hotel (Blue Horizon). Went to a diner Hamburger Mary's (or something like that) that served a diner breakfast, was just fair. We are up early, so a place that opens at 8:AM would be a good call.
The downtown restaurants from an earlier post are a bit far (Deaconess).
Thanks as usual, Chowhounders!

We have reservations at Fish House, thanks. The desserts indeed don't look exciting. However, they are reasonably priced and sound a lot like Blue Point Grill here in Princeton...no frills but excellent seafood. Good choices on children's menu, too.
Probably will skip dining in Whistler, unless we see a place that grabs us.

What about Rimrock Cafe? Have you been there? They stopped their 39 price fixe.

That sounds great. I checked out Fish House, it's easily accessible from where we're staying, and got a great rating! Thanks so much for the tips!

Vij's doesn't take reservations (we're still going) but I made one at La Quercia. Probably will try Banana Leaf and Rimrock Cafe when we go to Whistler. Also Blue Water Cafe. I really can't wait.

THANKS! I had Vij's starred, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately they don't take reservations, but we'll try to get in. That specialty combines two of my son's snack items, pickles and potato chips. He loves the Pickle Guys on the Lower East Side.

Please help me, chowhounds. We are going to Vancouver on 8/9. We have a 12 year old son who is a fairly adventurous eater but probably still doesn't eat like an adult...in other words, he has some pickiness and probably couldn't handle a 4 course price fixe dinner. I would like to make some reservations ahead of time. I looked at La Quercia, but that is 4 courses at a price fixe, and I am not sure if my son will be allowed to order a subset of that. We could try Lumiere, but we have several Daniel Boulud restaurants in NYC, and if we book there, I'd like to know if it's appreciably "Canadian" or if someone knows how different it is from, say, Daniel, Cafe Boulud or DB Bistro Moderne, that would be a help. Anyway, does anyone have other recommendations? We'd like to go to Banana Leaf, and probably will meet up with a family my husband knows in Chinatown, but does anyone have other suggestions? Italian, seafood, French, Asian, we're pretty open. We will be going to Whistler and have a ferry booked for Victoria.
It would also be great to have a list of the Must Have local specialties. I am assuming the salmon is terrific, obviously, but some suggestions regarding the more down home local tidbits would be great. For example, here in NJ Trenton tomato pie is a terrific local standard...stuff like that.
MoC MoC Sushi, Princeton
Ah, but this is Princeton, land of the mediocre and the overpriced!
Craft vs. Scarpetta
Thanks for replying everyone, we ended up at Scarpetta, which was the 12 year old's vote and we were in the neighborhood b/c of the High Line. We all loved it. Yes, I had the polenta with the fricassee of truffles and it was fantastic. My son got the fresh mozzarella appetizer and then the classic spaghetti and tomato sauce and was in 7th heaven. I had the ravioli with duck and foie gras, my husband got the short ribs appetizer and rabbit, peas and tarragon parmesan sauce and was very happy. Everything was delicious, my son was thrilled with the bread basket, bread stuffed with his favorite Italian salami and melted mozzarella cheese really made his day. The only regret is that we were all too stuffed for dessert. Next time.
I do very much want to try Craft and still plan to do so. I am glad to hear it was so successful with the younger set, that's important information. Next up is Eleven Madison Park for our anniversary, and if the son is in tow, I am sure he will find something he likes. Danny Meyer restaurants are usually very accommodating.
Thanks all!

Craft vs. Scarpetta
We're in NYC for Memorial Day weekend with a somewhat adventurous 12 year old eater. I made a reservation at Scarpetta since we'll be downtown but a couple of friends like Craft. Any reason to pick one over the other? We both love Italian but Craft's menu looks terrific too. We could try both but that's getting a bit expensive.

Le Bamboche in Paris
I had an amazing meal at Le Bamboche in 2002. We were set to make a reservation but now it seems to be way more expensive (moderately priced back then). I am also here with my 11-year-old and husband, which would make it the price of a family. My questions are is it still worth it, could a child eat without having to get a tasting menu or spending a fortune? I am really disappointed that I can't go back, as it was one of my favorite restaurants in Paris.
Prague recommendations
I did see some recommendations but aside from the posting in May, the others were in 2008. Someone recommended Restaurant David, we might try that. There are a lot of good restaurants in Prague anyway, so far we haven't had a bad meal with the exception of an Italian restaurant near our hotel.
Is it possible to delete your post?
Prague recommendations
I'm looking for good recommendations for Prague restaurants and cafes. We would love Czech traditional and also contemporary. Also any good pastry cafes or bakeshops as the Czechs are famous for it. Any types would be appreciated as we are here now. We went to a good restaurant at Prague Castle and a little place called Braunav Sklep that was good Czech traditional.

That Drink sounds intriguing. You guys are all so helpful. Not all the boards are this responsive. Many thanks again.

Thanks for the warning. My son is okay in fancy restaurants like Cafe Boulud and Babbo but he's no longer interested in the makeshift children's pasta dish so it can get expensive. I'm thinking Sakura Bana and 9 Prk. We might save the others for another trip or when he's occupied, which is very likely since another one of his friends is moving back to Boston.

I like how you guys have boiled down the choices for me. They all sound great. I will be trying other places on subsequent trips. The thing about O Ya is I do have a kid who might like Sakura Bana better, though he has gotten fairly adventurous lately. But this is a great selection. I love the No. 9 Park menu so probably we'll be going there.

Glad to see Dali is still around....is O ya superior to Sakurabana? They are probably different types of Japanese restaurants. Currently I find Nobu kind of tired, and I just read a Boston Globe review that made O ya sound wonderful.
I will make some reservations and report back. I want to thank everyone who posted, it helps us a lot!

I'm going to Boston with family for Mem Day weekend and would like opinions on reservations. What is the best restaurant in the North End? The best in the South End? We loved La La Rokh, East Coast Grill, Elephant Walk in its heyday when we were living up there...tend toward more inventive cuisine but doesn't need to be the trendiest. How's Oleanna? Hamersley's Bistro? Would love to hear your opinions!
