Help! Need a place for drinks/dinner near the 405 in Signal Hill, Long Beach, Lakewood area

Hi,

I really need some help.

I'm looking for a not too expensive place (I've been out of work for a while) to go on a date. She lives in Costa Mesa and I live in Redondo Beach. So we're looking for places that are in the middle. We've been meeting in Shoreline Village,(Parker's, Yard House) but it's too far off the 405. Can anyone give me some suggestions for decent places nearer to the 405?

Thank you in advance!

Best corned beef and pastrami in L.A.?

In the past week I've been to Canter's which was ok when I was a kid but now just seems to rest on it's laurels, and Art's which was just so-so. Most places slice their meat so thinly that the flavor and texture disappears. I was also down in Irvine or Lake Forrest -somewhere down there-and saw The Hat so I stopped in. I have to agree with the 'hounds who say it's greasy, salty and turns into rubber. It is filling and cheap though.

I'm definitely going to try Magee's and Brent's when I get the chance.

Best corned beef and pastrami in L.A.?

Other than Langer's who has the best corned beef and pastrami in L.A.? Mort's isn't that great and I think Nate 'n Al's is very overrated. Suggestions? Thanks

Best Beef Jerky

How come no one has mentioned Angelo's jerky from Sonoma county? He makes several different types including teryaki, pepper, garlic, and cajun. He also does salmon jerky and turkey jerky. And, if you want great handmade sausages, he's got those too. Yum!!

Paul's in Tarpon Springs?

I wish we had gone to Plaka instead of Paul's. They nickel and dimed us to death. It's clearly a tourist place and I wouldn't recommend it. Hellas was really good for dessert though. Thanks.

Paul's in Tarpon Springs?

Thanks for the help. We went to Paul's and it was mediocre at best. I wouldn't recommend it. Probably should have gone to Costa's or Plaka. Hellas bakery was really good though.

Paul's in Tarpon Springs?

Hi All,

I'm in town for a couple of days and someone recommended Paul's Shrimp House for supposedly great boild shrimp and Greek salad. Any thoughts or other suggestions? Thanks.

South Bay noodles, soup and asian food

Someone offline suggested a place called Shin-Sen-Gumi Hakata Ramen in Gardena. Any thoughts about them? Thanks.

South Bay noodles, soup and asian food

I'm looking for really good Pho or other noodle soup in the South Bay. Also, does anyone know of a place with great Hot and Sour soup? How about in Venice, Playa del Rey, or MdR? What about good Vietnamese, Chinese or Thai places in the same areas and the South Bay? Preferably not too expensive on all of the above.

Wine bar or other 1st date places?

The problem with Culver City is that my date is coming from the Valley. I'm in the Marina and want to find something more or less halfway.

I do like Bottle Rock but have to agree that the menu is very limited and the chairs are not very comfortable. Also, the service can be kind of spotty. I've had to ask umpteen times for water on more than one visit, and the servers don't really seem to know their wines.

Wine bar or other 1st date places?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a good place to meet someone for the first time. Casual and with good energy, but where we can talk. Hopefully not too expensive. Maybe a wine bar or something like that in West LA or Brentwood or even Santa Monica. If they've got some good food too, that would be great. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

BBQ brisket

How about The Pig on La Brea? They have great pulled pork and I think they do brisket as well.

1st & 2nd Date places?

Hi All,

I'm looking for some ideas to take women on 1st and 2nd dates. Nothing overly romantic or expensive, but good food and atmosphere. Ideally in the Santa Monica, Venice, and Marina del Rey areas. Thanks

Late delivery options in Playa del Rey? Menus online?

Actually, if you order right at Cantalini's, they're pretty good. They've got a new pizza chef, and the pastas are good. They won't drown veggies in oil if you ask them not too. They're delivery service is not always available. Try Berri's Cafe. They deliver until 11:00 pm most nights. Szechwan Palace has adequate Chinese food and I've had them deliver as late as 9:30 pm. I think Vinny's Pizza which is over near Bristol Farms delivers late also. Finally, Tandoor-a-India delivers until 10:00.

Food Near Playa Del Rey

If you're in Playa and just want some good, reasonably priced food, I'd say try Cantalini's. The food is good, not great, but good to very good. The prices are very reasonable for the quality. I'm not a fan of Minotaur. I think it's very overpriced for what you get and, unless they've recently upgraded the wines, those are nowhere near what I'd expect for a so-called wine bar. For something better than a taqueria and still in Playa, definitely try Senior G's.
