When Having a CSA Box Starts to Suck

Hey, it's no coincidence that the leaders of the 'seasonal eating' movement, like Alice Waters, are from California which has a year round growing season and a range of growing climates similar to an eastern range from New Jersey to Florida.

Bourdain's Foie Gras Politics

Hmmm....I wonder how foie gras would taste in a biscuit? No, really, I've never had foie but the 'nanny state' that our government is becoming is just another sign of the feminization of America. For the first 2 centuries of USA's history, men called the shots, whereas now it looks like womens instincts and standards are setting the tone. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, it is different though, especially if you're a 'please just leave me alone' type guy with a bias towards personal freedom. Stop with the cradle to grave coddling already, ok?

Super-Sized Ginger Chewies

Not bad. I add dark rum, crystallized ginger and dates to mine for extra flavor and chewiness. I like the idea of rolling them in sugar, I'll try that next time.

Kitchen Nightmares US - Oct. 17 episode

The owner was a real stonehead and I felt sorry for his wife. The 'GM' was at most a host...at Denny's. I wouldn't be surprised if they backslid to their old habits because they didn't care about food quality to begin with.

Chocolate Rum Pudding Cake

There's a vegan chocolate cake in the 'Moosewood Restaurant Book of Desserts'. It's very light and easy to make. The fun starts when you add the vinegar.....

Lavender Doughnuts

The donut plant on Grand St. in NY was the source for the D&D lavender donuts, I'd bet.

Lemon Verbena Drink

Great idea, great drink. Lemon verbena is easy to grow in a sunny area, well drained soil. It would probably do well in a patio clay pot, too. Check a local nursery for starter plants in their herb section.

Organic Pet Food Boom Won't Last

Hey, there's a dog food plant in our town (Alpo) and I'd hate to see canned dog food ingredients up close & personal. Of course, I wouldn't want a slaughterhouse tour, either. I am up for a salad maker, though. Anyway, I have found a way to make some great natural dog biscuits, so take a look. No blood, I promise.

Cheddar Biscuits

I love the idea of grating the butter, cutting it in with a pastry tool can be a chore. Also, the cream rinse before baking is a great way to get a finished look.

ROME RESTAURANTS

We were in Rome last month and had our best meal at "Renato et Luisa" - near the ruins with the cat shelter in center city Rome. We were referred there by UN staff that my wife works with. Great food, reasonable prices. The desserts were incredible.
