Brunch Paoli/Malvern Area
There is a small sign in the grass at Spread Eagle Village: "Future Home of A Taste of Britain". Does anyone have details? There is so much space available at Spread Eagle, it could be moving in almost anywhere.
Authentic French Bistro
I think the food is good at Parc. But, what puts the place over the top is how authentically bistro-like it looks. The decor and finishes are beautiful. And, you really can't top sitting overlooking the square on a beautiful day. We ate a late lunch at a table on the last row in the actual restaurant, up a level from the sidewalk . What great street theatre. Parc would be a good place to relive the Paris atmosphere you probably miss.
Dinner in the Main Line Area
Update: August 2009
Wow, interesting how many places have closed since the original post in January of '07
Union Trust
The Sunday review by LaBan was adequate (2 bells) but certainly nothing that sets Union Trust far ahead of all of the other steakhouses in the city.
Soft ice cream / "Frozen custard"
Scratch the praise for the custard cupcakes. Half of it is icky frozen frosting. The cones still deserve four stars, though
Soft ice cream / "Frozen custard"
Stopped at Custard and Cakes for the first time today, after lunching on cheesesteaks at D'Alessandro's. I truly haven't had frozen custard like that since ... well, I'm going to say since the '70s. I bought a six pack of the custard 'cupcakes' to share with the family fir dessert tonight. They are cupcake paperforms, filled with custard and frozen.
Any room at the inn? Great food + rooms
We're looking for an inn 'in the country' of Pennsylvania, to share with three other couples coming in from three different parts of the country for an end of July jaunt. They've never seen any part of Pennsylvania, outside of Philadelphia, so we want to show off our state. We're looking for a quaint inn that has terrific dining with great wine list and features rooms upstairs where we can spend a night or two, in a beautiful setting. Does this exist? Somewhere in Bucks County or New Hope? Many thanks. If any people know, it's you.
A La Maison - BYOB - Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore
Glad to hear this review. I hope it means they've gotten things together. Really like the idea that a French person is onboard. I'm more than game to give the place a second try.
Maia to become Azie
There's a sign up on Lancaster Avenue: Azie is coming in June. It was reported online 5/27 that Azie, serving Asian fusion, will take Maia's upper level space.
Old Coldstone/Wayne & US30
I wish the place luck, but I don't understand why they'd choose that location or even the need for another spa. There are plenty of them in Radnor already (BC3000, Ame, Harmonia, to name a few). The only time clients will be able to find a place to park will be before 11 am....after 3 pm...but before 6 pm. And, forget about finding a spot on Saturdays.
Old Coldstone/Wayne & US30
Rumor has it that a salad place is going on to the old Coldstone
Old Coldstone/Wayne & US30
There's construction action going on in the vacated Coldstone space in the town center of Wayne. Does anybody know the skinny? Is it going to be a restaurant? Or just another over-specialized boutique that appeals to .5% of the population?
Mims in Wayne
Lbtbrett: You can count on us to give you a try. Some longtime Wayne friends were telling us how great LaFourchette had been at the same location years ago so a resto with a French 'twist' would be welcome in this town. And, the cheese and local food make it even more intriguing. Just wondering: why are the owners keeping 'The Freehouse' name? People are going to think it's the same old menu and attitude as before (bangers and mash, etc) and keep on walking. Plus, 'Freehouse' describes a British dining place, not one with a French/American/organic /local menu.
Mims in Wayne
It's Friday night and the lights are out, a ladder is visible inside, the big Mims sign has been taken down (the old Freehouse sign is showing) and there are some kind of notices on the front windows. I couldn't get close enough to read them. I thought his son was cooking at the Wayne location since court order forbad Mims to operate a restaurant this close to the city by court order. Didn't he open a new Creole Cafe farther away? If anybody has info, I'd be interested to find out. Yet another empty storefront in Wayne now?
Tradewinds coffee drive-thru in Paoli
That's very bad news. It was a clever, convenient and fun alternative to the usually burnt taste of Starbucks brew.
So what are people in Pennsylvania eating for lunch today?
Leftover smorgasbord: homemade chili with beef and beans, brussels sprouts and snow peas. I am the only one in the household who loves both chili and brussels sprouts so there are always lots of leftovers.
maia in villanova closed?
Not even a year. First Fresh Grocer...then Maia. Never should have smashed down the skating place.
R.I.P. Collegeville Acme and Wegmans
So glad to hear that rumor confirmed. That's excellent news. But, the old golf club site sure is moving slowly. I had read that it was going to be almost a town in itself, with housing and shopping. It's just flattened land and a bunch of bulldozers right now and has been for many months.
What's up with Margaret Kuo's (Wayne)?
Exactly what happened to us back in October. There seems to be ample staffmembers hanging around but they always seem tobe looking elsewhere. And, if you are a 'nobody' in their eyes, forget about it.
maia in villanova closed?
Good...the addition of the question mark rather than the sentence being a statement of fact.
maia in villanova closed?
Can that initial headline be changed?? Maia's been operating as you describe for a number of weeks now: limited upstairs service and business as usual downstairs. I just hate to jinx Maia and write the place off before it actually happens. Talk like that is a deathknell for a borderline resto. But, the reality is the crowds aren't flocking there so much anymore; painful for those of us who were rooting for the place in the early days.
Local pet peeves for area restaurants from Mitch's article
I think my Trend shows up with my Philadelphia Inquirer, folded inside one of the sections. I haven't read his column yet but my numero uno peeve is being told to 'ENJOY'. Ick, yuk, blah: I hate that trite delivery phrase. You hear it after hostesses seat you and after your food is delivered. It's taken over the restaurant world. While I'm on my rant, I don't like the "you guys" address, either. Maybe I am a cranky old person already.. but I am NOT the server's chum or buddy or pal. It's especially out of place when the customer is over the age of 65. What happened to sir or ma'm? It works in Europe. Or how about just asking, "Are you ready to order?"
Best Sushi in the Philly Burbs
We got the same kind of treatment at Margaret Kuo's earlier this year. Other people in the place were fawned over. We got such such 'drop and run' service that we had to get up out of our chairs after our food sat there for a while and ask the bar man for soy sauce.
Roy's - Never Again
Glad you contacted the manager and even gladder than he responded in a such a responsible manner. People shouldn't mess with hungry pregnant women. We can get really mean.
Who labels them "Best Restaurants"
And, let's not forget those new CH posters whose names we've never seen before; people who have just one or two posts. More often than not, they're not asking for anybody's opinion about something or posting a question. They're here to either praise or slam a resto as part of their agenda or smear campaign.
Who labels them "Best Restaurants"
Did anybody else find a copy of Philadelphia Style in the mailbox? The one with Cole Hamels (sigh) on the cover? I know this is more of a 'hotel/info' magazine but its restaurant section is like a thesaurus for superlatives. Everything is delicious, service top shelf and the place is a shining example of _______ cuisine.
Good dinner near Rosemont?
I've had some pretty good sushi at Samurai, a Japanese restaurant right in Rosemont on Lancaster Avenue. You could also order a beer at the bar while you take a peek at the menu at Gullifty's, which is set back in the strip center next door. It's more of a pub/family/scene kind of space. Not too bad.
Why do certain restaurants have a no reservations policy?
I wish I were as flexible as you are. Here it is, about 5:30 as I write, and I can't imagine sitting down now to start drinking wine and eating a nice meal. I'm hours away from that frame of mind and wouldn't enjoy the experience if I had to start so early. I'm just set in my ways; I will only choose a restaurant that'll take me when I'm ready. Wish I could be like you sometimes.
And how was your Valentine's Day Dinner?
Restaurant Taquet in Wayne. They were doing a nice, steady business (not too jammed or rushed) and the servers did their jobs well. Great meal, except for the special soup of the night: Lobster Bisque. Too much herb (chives?) and no sherry that I could taste. I always love a good Lobster Bisque so this was disappointing. But, as always, the duck was fab. 3 course meal for one price, with the plat determining the cost. We spent about $45 for one dinner...$50 for the other, plus wine.
