Downeast Maine - North of Ellsworth

Bold Coast Smokehouse closed in March, according to the website. I hope they find a new owner, and I hope they ship. Their stuff looks great.

Savin Rock Roasting Co - Stratford, CT: What's up?

Interestingly (or not), Chowder Pot also looked at the space that is now the defunct, possibly cursed Bossa Nova.

Jason Hawkins & Carole Pecks Good News Cafe on NBC30 this morning

Won't load for me either, but thanks for the link - I am interested in the piece, so will check back on it.

Jason Hawkins & Carole Pecks Good News Cafe on NBC30 this morning

I've seen Jason Hawkins do a number of pieces on restaurants and other places/events, and he's gushed over every single one of them, so I don't consider him a bona fide reviewer - he's more like a cheerleader. If I see him doing a restaurant, I consider it more of an advertisement - maybe "feature" to be more kind - than a review. So bottom line ... no faith. I usually watch to see what the food looks like, though.

That being said, I've had no problem with Carole Peck's food and have had a number of great to really nice meals there; never had the cakes or cupcakes there, though. We had a front of house issue a while back, and hubby and I just haven't felt like going back yet, so don't know if I'll ever face the dry cake challenge.

Catered pig roast in New Haven area?

I've only done their food, not a catered event, but Uncle Wilie's does pig roasts. Some pricing info is on the bottom of the catering menu.
web page for catering - http://www.unclewilliesbarbecue.com/bbqcatering-ct.html
catering menu (pig roasts mentioned on Page 2) - http://www.unclewilliesbarbecue.com/uncle-willies-images/uncle-willie-menus/Uncle-Willies-Catering-Menu.pdf

Actually, if you Google "pig roast New Haven CT" you get some interesting-looking results for various amounts of money.

Connecticut CREATETV - Now a SPORTS Channel

Same here; so why not run the cycle twice, and the other twelve hours run sports?

To be fair, I don't love every single cooking show on Create; I can do without Tommy Tang, and Caprial and John get a little too cutesy. But I definitely miss Messrs. Pepin and Keller, Sara Moulton and maybe even a tiny little bit, the Cooks Country people. I will miss the happy painting guy, too, but he's got nothing to do with food.

Connecticut CREATETV - Now a SPORTS Channel

I guess; but some Comcast systems in Connecticut (Hartford, Middletown, Vernon) are carrying it. Maybe they're carrying a non-CT feed?

I love the Whale and the UCONN Women, but I wish Sports and Create could at least timeshare a channel or something.

Connecticut CREATETV - Now a SPORTS Channel

The press release from CPTV says they'll use viewer feedback to incorporate the most popular Create programming into other CPTV channels; but the rest of the release certainly makes it sound like the channel is just plain gone from most of Connecticut. Okay, maybe not most, but a good chunk, including my area.

Crave - nothng new?

Ate there tonight and had a great meal. Got the calamari, pear salad, and filet mignon; hubby had the tuna tartare, Caesar salad, and hanger steak. (Long day, no lunch for us.) My calamari was lightly breaded and perfectly fried, and the sweet-spicy - with emphasis on spicy - dipping sauce worked very well. Salads were excellent. My filet was done just as asked, and came with a Rioja reduction; one side was a sweet potato gratin that is rich and oh so tasty. Servings were generous, and I'll be having leftovers tomorrow for lunch (Yay!). The place was pretty busy - just a couple of two-tops open; I think that's pretty good for a Sunday evening. .

best corned beef to buy?

Also got a Wellshire this year, and it was very good. Had hash tonight, and just as good - okay, probably better - the second time around.

New Haven Pizza Tour

There's a (Saturday) farmers' market around the corner, and we park by Pepe's to go there. In the fall, the line starts to form about 11am (I think they open at 11:30); as the school year goes on, it calms down quite a bit. (Which is not to say there's *always* a line, just often.) On a Homecoming Weekend, I've seen the line forming as early as 10:30- ish.

Foodie driving through CT....what are some MUST try's ??

Not trying to get into a pissing contest, but the White Horse Pub's website says they're in Washington.

(I'll be up there in a couple weeks, and look forward to trying them out.)

Foodie driving through CT....what are some MUST try's ??

I'm not David, but if it's this place, it's actually in Marbledale-Washington.

Scratch Baking also makes an excellent cream puff - a shot of ganache lines each cut side of the pastry, with a generous dollop of whpped cream in between - and their chocolate pudding is to die for. They're great with non-chocolate stuff, too. (I *do* go there too often.)

Suggestions for client/good time dinner in Gettysburg?

Cashtown Inn might fit the bill - it's historic, but it can't help that; the food is good, the wine selection is nice, and the service is quite good. It's about 15 minutes outside of Gettysburg on Route 30.
http://www.cashtowninn.com/pages/menus/dinner.html

While the Inn at Herr Ridge can serve busloads of people, that's never been the case while I've eaten there - and they have a very nice, white tablecloth formal dining room. The food is mostly (if not all) local and very good, wine list is also good - the service can be a bit leisurely. That's not an issue with me, may be for others. It is just outside of the battlefield area on Route 30.

Cafe Saint-Amand on Baltimore Street might be more casual than you want, and it's a storefront, if that matters. I've only been there once, but the food was great; and it recently got a mention in a local color type of publication - the pictures are kind of drool-worthy. I don't know whether they have a liquor license, though.

I haven't been to Sheppard Mansion, but it has an excellent reputation. It's about 30 minutes from Gettysburg on Route 116. (Sheppard Mansion isn't on 116, you take 116 to Hanover.)

If good time = girls, girls, girls or something .... I can't help you there.

Edit: I just can't get that end parentheses to go where it belongs. Apologies.

New England not well represented on 101 best restaurant list.

The Connecticut one was Pepe's in New Haven, and the RI one was Al Forno. I read the list a couple days ago, but the list is linked in the original post. I was surprised Primo in Rockland, ME didn't make it (and I realize they're on the Northern NE board).

"Not your mother's slow cooker cookbook"

Hey, thank you for this tip! I stopped in to check out NYMSCC and picked it up, along with two Cook's Country books (The Cook's Country Cookbook, '08 and More Best Recipes, '09) for $7 each. 'Twas a good day at Ocean State!

Help - Boss needs to pick up takeout lunch for five enroute Bridgeport to Westport, CT

Oscar's deli on Main Street is relatively close to Kings Highway N - the sandwiches aren't gourmet but they're packed and tasty (and Westport-priced).
http://westport.patch.com/listings/oscars-delicatessen

There's also the recently revived Art's Deli on Rt. 33 near downtown/KHN - it's an Italian deli that also makes monster (and normal-sized, I think) sandwiches that are neither gourmet nor healthy, but are also excellent.
http://westport.patch.com/listings/arts-deli-9af1d760

And if you go to the comments on this blog post, there are some mini-reviews for Art's.

I occasionally get these no-pressure last-minute assignments - good luck in your quest.

Amazing Small Plates at Rock City Cafe, Rockland, ME

The menu looks quite nice - I hope to get there on the next trip to the Midcoast.

GotChef Food Truck in Milford

The soup makes a really nice lunch - you get a good hunk of ciabatta with it - and the price has stayed the same. Once in a while we get dinner from Got Chef; but it's a mini-splurge for us, and the food is excellent, so we don't find the prices unreasonable. If we did it once a week or something, I might feel differently about that. But I haven't had a bad morsel of food from GotChef, so still feeling the love.

Jewish deli

Westville Kosher Deli is just down the street from Katz's - they're definitely Kosher (and they have tongue on the menu). I've been going there for years, and have had only excellent food. Sandwiches are a little pricey, but the quality is exceptional and the size quite large. Just sayin'.....

Friendlys free Fribble Saturday Jan 21, 2011 12-5pm

The way Friendly's is closing doors around here (CT), I'd say ask no questions and get your free Fribble while you can.

Fez

Stamford, CT perhaps?

Smoke and Bones - Derby

I got a brisket sandwich and fries today. You're right about the sandwich, it's freakin' huge. For me, too huge - the bun could not hold up to the assignment, and I ended up knife and forking it. On the one hand, leftovers are a nice thing if you like the food; on the other, if you're eating this in public, it gets really, really messy.

The brisket itself was fairly fatty - the nature of the beast, I guess, but mine at home comes out pretty thoroughly rendered. The meat was acceptable to good in taste and tender; the Kansas City Sweet sauce was also adequate, but didn't stand up all that well to the whole sandwich. (In my mind, Carolina Mustard sauce goes on pork, and Kansas City = beef, hence the choice of sauce.)

The fries were standard crinkle cuts, nothing special - and again, they give you a boatload of them. Service was super-friendly, and my order was ready in good time.

Smoke and Bones gives you a huge amount of food for the money. If that's your thing, you'll love it. The food itself was not offensive, but will not make me forget the old Stick to Your Ribs in Stratford (and Little Piggy in upstate SC). STYR is no more, so S&B will do in a pinch; despite the lukewarm tone of my experience, I'll go back, most likely to try the pulled pork or a po 'boy.

Oh, and they're in the old Deerfield Meat (and porn shop) space, across from Marie Antoinette's bridal shop on Route 34.

Smoke and Bones - Derby

Geez, that's a shame. Like I said, I've been spared (apparently).

Smoke and Bones - Derby

Oh, he's local to the Valley, been here a long time, and does a good job. His stuff isn't avant garde or anything - very basic catering, but I've been to numerous events he's done, and the food's always been solid. Perhaps a sad commentary that that's all it takes to make me happy, but I've also had some pretty nasty catered food, so.....

Here's his website - http://www.davecaters.com/index.html

Smoke and Bones - Derby

I drive by there every day and always think about stopping in - now it sounds like I definitely should! Saw on their truck that it's a David Grant operation, which in my book is a pretty good sign.

Post the Three Favorite Things You Ate in a Restaurant in So. NE in 2011

Have you had the regular chocolate pudding from Scratch Baking? That might be on my list of three. Incredibly dense and intensely chocolate, not too sweet.

Primo in Maine

Following up .... had two nice dinners at Primo for New Year's (and the night before, inadvertently). New Year's Eve, there was a tasting menu - looked good, but was huge, and a couple of items made me back off. Had a duck dish, which was excellent. The hubby had swordfish with clams and mussels in a saffron sauce - freakin' delicious, he says. Though the place was totally booked, the staff was organized, efficient, and courteous.

Just curious .... is Lily BIstro no longer with us?

Gettysburg

I second Cafe Saint Amand - had a nice dinner there. The atmosphere isn't totally bistro-like, though, if that matters. Just my opinion; but the food and service are good.

Cashtown Inn is not at all bistro-like, but I've had some very good meals there - plus the atmosphere is nice, and the staff are efficient while making you comfortable.

Have also had some good meals at The Inn at Herr Ridge - food is excellent and locally sourced, though I wouldn't exactly call it bistro-like. Service is leisurely, which isn't an issue for me, but may be for others. http://www.innatherrridge.com/dinner.pdf
