Anyone go see Ripert?
He was stuck hanging out with Gilchrist?!?! Oh dear...
Did not go, thought about it a lot but decided it wouldn't be as entertaining as Bourdain last year
Best Pub Food - Calgary
i really like the Garrison on 42 Ave SW and 20 ST - the food is pretty fresh, always hot and tasty and one of the best pub salads anywhere! friendly service too, a great neighbourhood spot and soooo much better than OJ's or Union Station in Marda Loop
Home Tasting Room - Calgary
went a couple weeks ago - loved it, my only complaint is their wine prices seem a bit high.
food was great, lots of flavour and very fresh. going back this weekend.
very very very delicious handmade truffles! even the flavours i didn't expect to like were fantastic.
Phil & Sebastian Marda Loop OPEN!
i have to agree, it can be pretty slow....they need a better baked goods selection as well. still enjoy the coffee though
Boxwood (Calgary)
i had the porchetta sandwich today for lunch - got it to go on my way back to the office. it was alright, the pork was nicely cooked and the sandwich seemed like pretty good value for the money but it just needed something a bit more, like a nice mustard or something...it was a bit bland. But as it is across the street from work, i will go back and try other things. i was a little peeved about the wait, the lunch crowd had passed (it was after 1), the fellow cooking was chatting away to someone sitting at the bar so it took forever for my sandwich to be prepared and it's a little strange when you are just waiting around, not really anywhere specific to stand or sit or anything....i felt it could have been quicker. No matter what, happy to see them open.
Great Regina Style Pizza
trifons is still around?!!?!
i left regina 18 yrs ago, can't believe they are still there, and copper kettle for that matter!!
Bison Mountain Bistro, Banff
i guess that would explain why i haven't been that impressed the last few times - it's too bad because i have had a number of delicious meals there. We were there a couple weeks ago for brunch and i have to admit it was not as impressive as the previous visit a few months ago. I always order the bison burger when there for lunch and the last 3 times have been very dry, but i kept trying....
i remember just two short years ago, the bet bison burger ever - a wonderful winter set menu and the best salad dressing i've ever had - pumpkin maple vinagrette, which the chef at the time gave me the recipe.
Kensington Riverside Inn
i've been hearing pretty underwhelming things about rush lately....
Kensington Riverside Inn
we just ate at Catch a couple weeks ago - it was a nice meal but didn't justify the price. I found after finally dining upstairs that i prefer the bar.
Alloy was a disappointment the last time we were there, poor service an the food wasn't quite as good as many previous visits. I'm glad to hear you had a good meal there, i'll put it on the list to try again.
Oishii Village closed, reopening as Sushi Motto (Cgy)
Good news! i noticed the new sign driving past yesterday - I knew you'd soon have a review John! I'll be sure to check it out - the presentation is very inviting1
Kensington Riverside Inn
Anyone been lately? I'm considering this and Rouge for the SO's birthday dinner Saturday or is there somewhere else i've forgotten?
DeVille, Part 2
i had heard a while ago there was a breakfast place going in the block, but that was when deville was alive and well...i'm OK with a crepe place as long as they have better staff than those there at the end of deville.
I do still go to the other two de ville locations - the colours one was just close to work.
DeVille, Part 2
so what happened to this place? I have to admit that since the woman that was there in the beginning left, we only went back a couple times, it quickly went downhill - could that be the reason? they had a bunch of kids in there that didn't know what they were doing? The last time I was there was the worst attempt at latte art i've ever seen, if you don't know how, just don't do it.
It's too bad they are gone, i really did enjoy it in the beginning.
new sunterra...
we bought pre-marinated short ribs tonight - fresh and delicious!! threw those on the bbq, made some rice w/veggies - great, fast mid-week meal!
i think everything will be fine - there are enough people living in the area and people like me that work and park near-by, pick up on the way home and are thrilled to have a gourmet option for groceries....
Donuts (Calgary)
Glamorgan donuts taste like they did when i was a kid -thank goodness!! it was heavenly, that boston cream.....oh yeah and the cheese buns, if you toast them in the oven just a little.....mmmmmm
new sunterra...
they need to get the prices on stuff, that's for sure - i think they are just behind though.
i haven't been at lunch yet but the SO says it's a madhouse, i guess they aren't prepared for the amount of people that are flocking over there - sounds like they didn't expect it to be quite so busy.
i'm happy it's there as it has a few nice things worth shopping there for, but i find i'm still stopping at midtown co-op for meat and basics
YYC - Where to find good BBQ ribs?
it's not a regular item but Taste gave us some ribs that were left over from a private party the previous night....yum!!!! sooo goood!!
I'll work on getting them to put them on the menu!!
Brava Bistro Disappoints
brava has been off my list for a long time now - never really impressed with the food and definitely not impressed with the service
Opinions on Vin Room (CGY)
I've been a couple times and it was great - if the weather ever co-operates the roof patio is lovely
GOOD Onion Rings in Calgary?
ok, they aren't breaded (i don't like the breaded ones) but garrison pub on 42 Av SW has great onion rings!! my previous favorite were from burger baron in regina sk....
New places in Cgy
we had very delicious pork tacos from tres marias the other day! the pork was so flavourful, definitely a regular meal from now on
New places in Cgy
Tres Marias...definitely not open late or sundays - but they have tasty tasty food!
Calgary - Petite: A little too warm, but great food
the heat isn't a recent problem - it gets much worse in the summer (shoot for a patio table) - i think it's just the result of a small space in an old brick building with an open kitchen...i hope they can fix it too - love it there!
The BottleHouse Beer Parlour - Calgary (Kensington)
i know!! saw the font on the sign driving by last night...grim...won't last long
New diner opening in downtown Calgary
we went on sunday - i thought it wasn't too bad and the prices seemed reasonable (my gauge is benny for under $15) - we only got one coffee refill and didn't even think to look if we were charged for it...i would give it another go and see what the scoop is. for me the coffee cups were big enough that i can't have more anyway.
keg. calgary .help
i agree, the keg isn't as bad as some of the other chains previously mentioned and like i mentioned before, i had a number of good solid meals at the alberni location in vancouver, but since moving to calgary, i've discovered i can make a better steak on the bbq at home than the keg thanks to the great beef available in this province.
If i go out for steak in calgary, it's somewhere that sources their food locally otherwise i spend a little more on a good cut at the butcher and a nicer bottle of wine and stay home.
The Loop diner
did they change the menu or just the name? they should paint the building too i think - still looks like nellies.
we don't really gone there even though it's behind us, the couple times we have been, the potatoes were still hard, i hate that!
good call on the name change, i'm surprised they didn't do it sooner.
