Noce Restaurant on Queen West: WagJag deal..is it a decent resto?

Hi
is this deal worth a try?
$65 for a 4-Course Prix Fixe Dinner for 2 at Noce Restaurant (a $155 Value)

The menu options sound very decent.
Question is, is the restaurant problematic in any major way.

thanks!
grateful for your feedback

You chowhounders are all kinds of wonderful.
the Hing I am looking at can either be liquid or powder using rice flour instead of wheat.
I will check them out. Thanks!
I hope to add yummy hing to my daals for my celiac buddies.
It just has to be there!

Hi,
I love to cook Indian food. However every container of hing is full of other ingredients.
Is it possible to find hing without wheat and other stuff?

Thai One On, (Avenue Rd north of Wilson) Aw c'mon, I should have known though!

We ate dinner tonight at Thai One On.
I should have known it was going to be a not great dinner by the fact that it always has a Groupon Now deal.
We were desperate from something different and took a gamble.

I have to ask, is there actually an Asian chef in the back?

The wait staff oddly also stayed huddled by the cash with their back to the tables most the time, it was hard to get their attention for the bill.

We ate vegetable fried rice (incredibly wet)
Crispy fish in a curry (many non edible seasonings spread throughout that could choke a horse but not clearly distinguishable from the other curry sauced vegetables) that had an incredible amount of bones and very dry.
Mixed appetizer platter, very greasy, not very tasty. The shrimp chips with I loved at Thai Magic ages ago were very stale. Fried tofu too heavy and firm. Calamari over cooked.

The wait staff were very nice but the food gives such a bad impression of Thai food.

Regrettable even with the groupon discount. And the gut rot is setting in.
Just thought I would detour other deal interested folks to take a pass.
Still in search of something (non-sushi) Asian north of downtown, West of Yonge.. Idas

where to find a coffee after 10 pm on a Friday or Saturday night....

We were just at Lalibela on Bloor & Ossington and my spouse said that their coffee was bold but very tasty and not bitter. The Ethiopian coffee ritual seems amazing... they will roast beans fresh for you for a full pot. You could easily drink some coffee at the bar. They were super busy at 9pm tonight.(Friday).
Very nice food (though I would pass on the teff bread and pay an extr 5 bucks for a fork if it didn't seem so gauche...)

ISO bulk citric acid powder? Toronto?

I found some at Qi on Bloor (near Bathurst). It is AMAZING. I descaled my Zojirushi kettle AND removed teh horrible minerals stuck humidifier that vinegar (%20) left behind. I was about to trash it, then I though what the heck, I put in a tiny amount in the boiler and when I came back a few hours later it was like brand new!!!
113g from $4.99.
Yay!!

ISO bulk citric acid powder? Toronto?

thanks! I hear it is good for keeping sliced apples from browining for school lunches (I read it on the McDonald's apple packets). I wonder if they do a citric acid wash and how much to use without making the apples sour...

ISO bulk citric acid powder? Toronto?

Cheap Birthday Cake?

The costco slab cakes have a pudding/custard like middle icing. Around $20 if I recall correctly. Huge. But if avoiding the white icing slab style cake, I agree, Costco does have very reasonable dessert cakes. If you aroud the west end, I believe this bakery makes old fashion Italian Rum cakes and strawberry short cake: La Rose Bakery

Will anyone share the secret technique to the slick fried rice at Congee Wong/Congee Star? (moved from Ontario board)

thanks Juniper!

Will anyone share the secret technique to the slick fried rice at Congee Wong/Congee Star? (moved from Ontario board)

Hi,
I make an ok fried rice.
I make rice the day before JUST for making fried rice.
I really enjoy the way the congee houses make it with no visible soy sauce.

HOW do they get the rice so glossy and separate?
Is it how they steam the rice? How they cool it once cooked? Is it how much oil they use?

My wok is a decent size but heck, even once day chilled, broken up with fingers, decently oiled, I still don't get the same toothy texture of the congee places.

What is the secret? Yes, yes, I know they have insanely high BTU's but there must be something else.

I have tried steaming it less, or with less water...maybe adding some oil to the rice in the rice cooker??
Please help, I just want less hassle stir frying it and a glossier texture without it getting mushy.

Thanks for any tips!!
Love on ya!

Desperately ISO herbal coffee for weaning off morning coffee, hopefully located in the GTA...

thanks MrsLeny and Pate!
I have tried a couple of mate infusions but I thought Mate did have caffeine kick (slow releasing and gradual though...) I am really trying to avoid the caffeine as well as the coffee in general because I am trying to figure out the cause of my fairly recent metabolic "change".
Thanks!
I should really do a test and do two weeks on mate and sweat it out in to see if it is the caffeine per se or strictly the coffee that is making me offend myself :) Thankfully not noticeable to others but bugs me like crazy.

Oddly, it not a problem until more recently. My 23andMe genetic test result says I metabolize caffeine faster than people who done have my same genotype. Maybe ashtanga yoga is upping my metabolism even more so the caffeine is exiting super quickly.. Ditching coffee is hard but I really like the yoga practice.

HELP! trying not to travel too far for cage-free eggs..impossible dream?

Unfortunately I understand that "Free-range" doesn't mean humane. By definition by the Ontario Egg Farmers association, all Free-Range means is this: A production system where hens have access to the outdoors.
This access hatch can be pathetically small and unreasonable for the number of hens in that particular egg production factory.
My lay-person (no pun intended ) assumption of the Egg definition mean "access to outdoors " does not certify that the hens are not at times caged.

There is also a lot of information on chowhound on the egg issue.

Desperately ISO herbal coffee for weaning off morning coffee, hopefully located in the GTA...

Hi Chow peeps,
I know, fairly delusional expectations but I need something brown and coffee-like for the morning.
I normally drink black, freshly medium roasted (from hours old to 1 week max) , freshly ground Chemex brewed. (yes, highly spoiled).

Tea is NOT helping the craving.
Headaches not a problem.
Fauxfee candidate so far I am seeking:
Dandy
Teeccino

Not sure if Dandy is available in Toronto.
Getting desperate.
Any help much appreciated.
My teeth grinding is out of control.....

Anyone know where the Cheese Cake Factory items are made from here in Toronto?

Hi,

Where to find Mille-Feuille (Napoleons) in Toronto?

can anyone post a pic please!!

HELP! trying not to travel too far for cage-free eggs..impossible dream?

I toyed with the idea of just having to get my own chicken...though in my neck of the city the peeps would have a COW. My parents (still at Keele and Wilson) used to have them when I was a little girl. Those were some damn good eggs.
Thanks to everyone for the interesting comments and incredible research. I got eggs from Culinarium yesterday. Taste differences or not, the karma of that egg sits best in my stomach and worthy of a financial sacrifice for me.
Just a side note, egg colour in my mind is been obliterated because farmers can doctor the egg colour with marigold petals in feed so esthetics aside, IMHO a good egg comes from a good farm. You people ROCK. I love ya's.

Hakka Thai Dynasty Keele & Wilson VEGAN FRIENDLY oh, yeah, oh yeah....

Hakka Thai Dynasty Restaurant

2706 Keele Street North York, ON M3M 2G1 416-245-9888 http://hakkathai.com/

From what I ate, it is really more a Hakka place afterall.

Lovely people, they veganized an entire meal for a south Asian family next to us.
We just dropped in for a quick siu yieh (late night snack) on our way home from an evening out.

Made me lovely vegetarian hot and sour that was amazing (I was more than half-expecting flavour compromise) and spring rolls coated in a chicken wing-like coating (hello Mama)

I found the food very good and not heavy nor greasy. The decor is certainly "fancy" for Keele and Wilson but the people are lovely there.

Check out this nice photo review.

I bet they will be pretty darn busy once the new swanky hospital 1/2 a block away is operating.
That is going really change the neighbourhood, it'll be interesting to watch.

Enjoy and share with veggie friends who avoid Asian restos because it is too hard to get them to remove beef/chicken/fish stocks from recipes...
Yay!

Yo, Vegetarians! Need a chicken finger fix..PC Blue Line Meatless Chicken Strips will fix you up.

Amazing if you can find the suckers.
Not sure if they might qualify as vegan though..
I went to 7 stores. Today I finally found them at Dino's No Frills on Avenue Road today after trying Real Canadian, Loblaws at several locations. I took the last two boxes on the shelf.

Anyhow, this really fools kids eating at my house for lunch dates and if I am too hungry to make myself some lunch, it is decent amount of protein and I don't have to worry about how old the chicken is in my freezer any more.

Loving Hut on Eglinton? Vegan Organic is it too good to be true?

Thanks everyone! I got the chance to eat there at last because Jerusalem was rammed on a Sunday night so my family had to switch in my favour!
I found the tofu really very good, and the rainbow salad delish and my kid liked the sushi (which oddly took 20 minutes from order?).
The service is warm but quite a quirky crew. I knew we were safe to eat there when I seemed like the woman in charge of the kitchen was speaking Chinese and it looked like the chef behind the door was also Asian. (Sorry, I can't trust fried tofu to just any kitchen, it has to be Asian to really rock the flavour and crunch).
I would recommend to any vegan and vegetarian, but the atmosphere is a bit odd, hard to put my finger on it and the videos are indeed unusual. I was not sure what we were watching but it was on loop it seemed.
Thanks for a good find!
Also for anyone looking for Chinese restaurant that can accomodate true vegetarian and vegan, we were totally surprised by the Hakka Dynasty (Keele & Wilson). They veganized a whole meal for a family sitting next to us and made me fresh hot and sour soup for me vegan AND IT TASTED GREAT!!! Also they had vegan spring rolls that would knock you socks off. It was coated in what reminded me of chicken wing batter.. MMMMMMmmmmm. Try them. Very nice folks.
