Quest for LA's best croissants

Order them from Williams Sonoma... have them at home with your coffee in the morning. Better than the Trader Joe's ones, but I agree Trader Joe's are pretty spectacular for the price! Was never impressed with Europane croissants, I find them quite over rated.

Best Cinnamon Rolls

I wholeheartedly agree, the outer layer is by far the worst. If I were to eat a single layer, I'd eat the innermost one! The outer layer is always so dry!

Best torta in East L.A. area

King Torta used to be really good when the torta price was $3, in the early part of this millennium. I forget how much they are now, but I just can't justify the price whatever it is now. Their bread is probably just best torta bread I've had, but I think they've become smaller and more expensive, unfortunately.

Afternoon Tea, downtown

No problem! To address the OP, I do think the Biltmore is pretty good, but nothing beats what I've had at Huntington Gardens so far in LA.

Afternoon Tea, downtown

For the record, high tea is not the same as afternoon tea. High tea is actually dinner. Afternoon tea, or "low tea" has the three main subtypes that many American establishments unfortunately misname high tea, namely cream tea, light tea, and full tea. REVIEW: Palate Food + Wine

I was floored by this restaurant. The food is incredible, the service unpretentious, and the prices so reasonable it would be a complete shame not to try it at least once. I for one will definitely be returning. Their cheese plate, especially, was on par with one I had at providence for probably half the price.

No more Clover at Groundwork Coffee downtown!

I hate to have to post this, but I have found out that the Clover has been removed from the downtown Groundwork Coffee location. What a disaster. The barista cited something about the fact that Starbucks has bought the Clover company or something to that effect. Check this out: http://www.cloverequipment.com/home/

Addendum: I guess there is another general thread that discusses this somewhat on CH: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/500770

Fried Ice Cream in the SGV?

I have officially found the most amazing fried ice cream in the SGV, and thought I would give my two cents back to the OP (i.e. me). Daisy Mint on Colorado in Pasadena makes the most amazing fried ice cream I have ever had. And, to top it off, its only 4.88 including tax. WHAT A BARGAIN! It has a slab of vanilla ice cream goodness with the most amazing, thick, crunchy, and not oily crust you could imagine. I recommend those in search of fried ice cream to try it. So amazing. And they don't get mad if you go in just to have that. I'm sure it'd be nice with one of their tea selections or a coffee.

Best Philly cheesesteak and gyro?

Gotta say one of the best philly cheesesteaks I've had in LA was at the LAC/USC County hospital cafeteria. Crazy, I know, but delicious. Rivals Fredo's in Pasadena (most actually argue it is much better).

Best DineLA Picks?

Takami Sushi ran out of all of their 3 dinner entrees on Sunday night so in apology they offered us an entire meal at half off (not alcohol of course). Needless to say, we had an amazing meal at cheaper than the $35 we would have spent (I think it was $31). Their food was great. Their mojito was spectacular as well.

Nice cheapish place to eat around the Arclight in Hollywood

I found a pretty good thread about this after posting. Looks like Hungry Cat is a pretty good solution.

Ok, lets throw down ... rank your places for best xiao long bao (or XLB)

I'm embarrassed to say I just tried the Lion's Head meatballs at MLV while of course getting the requisite pork XLBs. They are by far the most delicious meatballs I've ever had. So moist and flavored so nicely. And the mushrooms were amazing in that dish too! Highly recommended to try those when you go to try the XLBs.

Ok, lets throw down ... rank your places for best xiao long bao (or XLB)

I hope I'm counted as one of this "party"! I love how I can just walk into MLV and get XLB that IMO are better than at DTF with NW (no wait!). One order of pork XLB is the perfect meal for one person! With the free tea, of course. Comes out to less than 10 dollars with tip, if I remember correctly. I can't think of a more satisfying meal. Think I'll try Chang's too. I will continue to avoid DTF like the plague, because I can't stand lines for over-hyped food.

fakeberries

Please don't put Red Mango in the "fakeberry" category! Red Mango is the original, Pinkberry is an "fakeberry" rip-off of it. I had Red Mango in South Korea long before Pinkberry came here, was astounded that it hadn't yet become famous in the US, and the one in Westwood is indeed true to form. The yogurt is creamier, fruit fresher, and there is no hole in the center of the swirl!!!! Pinkberry is too crunchy/icy for my taste.

Charapita peppers

A recent thread on Peruvian food has got me thinking... Has anyone ever found restaurants with dishes that contain charapita peppers, or just the peppers themselves to cook with? They are tiny chili peppers that go well with a lot of food. Usually found in jars. Bought them on Amazon once (no pun intended).

Best oysters in LA?

Taps for sure has some of the best I've ever had. The Hood Canal oysters I had there were so delicious. Also, the Water Grill has an excellent oyster bar, but certainly more pricey.

The Best Burger in LA is at Trader Joe's!

I don't believe these are the same. I actually went to the South Pas one recently and these were the only ones they had (the Montana ones), as the others were out of stock... They simply were not as good and had no flavor. Very greasy and I felt gross putting cheese on them. The ones that I liked are the Trader Joes Grass Fed brand. They have kind of a non-circular shape (somewhat jagged edges). The label had some green on it and it was NOT vac packed, and not frozen. Maybe Will can verify that these are the ones he was referring to as well. It is confusing, indeed. Pre-peppering is a must, no matter what, I think.

Incidentally, I also decided to try the frozen buffalo patties. These are unbelievably good as well (medium rare). And I tried the TJs heirloom tomatoes which were awesomely flavorful too.

overrated/over hyped?

It is true. Those that I had in Beijing tasted and had a consistency much more similar to the MLV ones! But to each their own. That's all that matters!
