Crispo, Maremma, or Alta for family dinner?
My parents-in-law, brother-in-law, and uncle-in-law will all be in town next month to celebrate my husband's med school graduation. We have one vegetarian amongst us but everyone else is up to eating pretty much anything, with three of us being pretty big eaters. Which would be best in terms of ambiance (i.e. noise level) and food? The Crispo menu looked a bit more extensive than Maremma's, but I'm concerned about noise level there. Also, how is Alta with a large group? Any thoughts that y'all have are much appreciated.
Black & White Cookies?
Oh no, I just tried the black and whites at Junior's last night for the first time and thought they were fantastic! I like Moishe's too, but Junior's was better, I think.
Truffle Honey
Dean and DeLuca has white truffle honey which is very good. The brand appears to be called LuLu (it's unobtrusively printed on the label). Costs about $14 for a small jar, but it should last awhile.
B-day dinner party: Les enfants terribles or lil' frankies?
Lil Frankie's has a great round table in the back room that is wonderful for groups. 8 should be enough to fill it. I've taken large groups there twice (on Sat. night) and sat at that table. When I called to make the reservation, they made a note that I wanted the round table, but said that they couldn't guarantee it. Both times, however, it worked out. My one experience with Les Enfants Terribles was shortly after it opened several years ago and very positive (no problem with 5 people, great food and atmosphere), but it was so long ago that it probably has little bearing on the scene there today.
Looking for a decent burrito in NY. ANyone have any suggestions.
I second Paquito's. My husband and I love it, and get takeout from there about once a week. I think he'd eat there every day if he could. The one on 1st Avenue has a restaurant next door with a lovely back garden. There are a few other locations, all on the East Side as far as I can tell. My favorite is the Acapulco burrito, with black beans.
East Village- delivery or to go
Paquito's on 1st Ave. and 9th St. has really great burritos (the Acapulco with black beans is my personal favorite). In my opinion, they're the best in the city. We get takeout or delivery from there probably 3 times a month, sometimes more. They also have a restaurant next door with a great garden out back when the weather's nice.
Five Points or Red Cat?
Definitely go for the Red Cat over Five Points, though I'd agree with an above poster that the Harrison and the Mermaid Inn are also definitely worth a visit. I just went to the Harrison for the second time a couple of weeks ago and had a wonderful meal (great fish). I visit the Mermaid Inn about once a month; it's consistently delicious and the wine list is small but affordable and well-chosen.
Need restaurant where formal dress is OK and not out of place
I am looking for somewhere to go for my anniversary where I can dress formally, preferably downtown and not TOO expensive. I thought about Annisa, and maybe Eleven Madison (though I'd prefer to try something new). I know that in NY basically anything goes as far as dress is concerned, for the most part, but I don't want to feel really out of place. Somewhere with stellar service and food, and a tastefully romantic ambiance. I'd appreciate any suggestions!
What to eat at The Modern (main dining rm) this Fri. night
I am visiting the Modern this Friday for the first time and wonder if anyone has been recently and has any good suggestions for what to order. I'll be eating in the main dining room. Thanks!
