With warm weather are fiddleheads/wild leeks early?
Picked an entire shopping bag full on April 16 near Haliburton
Kefir grains inToronto?
Looking to make my own Kefir. Anyone know of a a store in Toronto that sells them. Have already visited a few health food stores in kensington market, but no one sells them.
Scarborough To-Do List - What have I missed? What SHOULD I miss?
You're joking right?
Source for authentic wineskins?
Doing a canoe trip this summer and cannot bring bottles (or boxed stuff).
Anyone know of anywhere in Toronto or eveneonline that sells authentic Spanish wineskins that hold upwards of 2 litres. Have checked camping stores and all they have are the cheap latex lined models.
La Palette
I used to be a fan of La Palette back when it was in Kensington Market. New Queen St. location is bright and noisy, the food over priced and the service is non-existant. Wouldn't recommend
meh
Agree with the new La Palette. Big, bright and noisy (as opposed to the chaming little Kensington Market boite it used to be). The food quality is generally good, but when I was there a few weeks ago, the service was extremely slow (3 hours for a meal) , the bread was burnt and the place was full of smoke from the open kitchen (time to upgrade the exhaust system). For what they charge, I expect much better. Will never return
Scarborough Gems
Pizza at Fratelli's is pretty good. They do a white opizza with potato slices whic is pretty good. The Pasta menu is overpriced and pretty dated (does anyone still eat pasta with a vodka cream sauce? Not since 1982)
Scarborough Gems
A most exclelwent List. You are truly a scarborough gourmand.
Chicken and noodle restuarnts looks like a dive but the food is top notch and very cheap.
Shhhhh...Vietnamese Noodle Star is already too busy. Let's keep this great place to ourselves (especially like the pho with tripe and sliced beef)
Mikes BBQ? Can't picture it. What corner is it on?
T-bones has been around for at least 20 years: Have never gone in but will give it a try.
Scarborough Gems
Lucky's at 3774 Lawrence Avenue East, (just east of Scarborough Golf Club Rd.
Call (416) 431-0383 about 1/2 hour in advance for pick-up. Beef with Black bean sauce is very good, so is the lemon chicken. They also have a location at Lawrence and Midland, but it's not as good (different chef).
Filmjolk in Toronto?
Anyone know of a store in Toronto that carries Filmjolk...it's a fermented milk that's quite popular in Sweden and other nordic countries. Tastes a bit like buttermilk.
Hidden away, independent cafes, worth making a special trip to visit.
Jam Cafe:
Wonderful local place on Carlton near Parliament. Kinda rewminds me f another fav , The Town Grill, that used to operate nearby.
The vibe is laid back with lots of dark wood and candles. The seating at one table is a beautiful old couch.
Foodwise, they smoke their own meats and everything is fresh, fresh, fresh. Had the elk rib steak with heirloom beet salad and fingerling potatoes (magnificnet).
Dining partner had the smoked duck salad and the duck leg confit (she likes duck!).
Went on a sunday cuz they don't charge a corkage fee (normally a $20 fee). Bonus: they serve your wine in Reidel crystal.
As much as I would like to keep this place on the down low, a restaurant of this quality deserve some buzz.

Cold Pressed Chocolate?
Anyone know a store that sells cold pressed dark chocolate? Tried some natural food stores but none have it. Apparently cold pressing preserves more of the good antioxidants, flavanoids , etc. The brad that seems to be preferred is Xocai Chocolate.
birthday restaurant suggestions - with annoyingly specific criteria (a challenge!)
Cafe 668 - they make tofu dishes that taste almost identical to meat (even meat eaters will love it) and the decor is definitely hip

Swedish Style Herring?
I have some friends that visit Toronto several times a year from Sweden , but complain they can never find good herring here - they purchased some herring from the St. Lawernce Market which they labelled as "just Okay".
Any idea where I can get some really good herring (not stuff in jars) to satisfy these finicky Swedes. Herring in mustard sauce and other sauces seem to be their preference.
Worst/Best Tourist Trap Food in TO
Worst:
Captain John's Seafood: Total tourist trap. I know there isn't much choice for anyone staying at a hotel alongs Queen's Quay, but give this place a pass. It smells. The food is overcooked and they basically don't care if you like it or not cuz a new batch of uninformed tourists will be arriving tomorrow to fill your seat.
Hard Rock Cafe: Unfortunatey, many tourists think Yonge Street is the cool place to go in Toronto. It isn' and neither is this greasy spoon.
Chinese Restaurant in Harbourfront Area
Does anyone know the name of the chinese restaurant along Queen's Quay (not the Pearl)? It was many years since I was there but I beliee it was in a Chinese Junk (next to the Raddisson Hotel). Is this place still around? Anyone been there lately?
doubles?
I love Roti Hut for roti, but have never had the doubles...IMHO going to rot ihut and not getting the roti, would be like going to a Oktoberfest and not ordering a beer
Peterborough to Kawarthas: Food Finds?
Yeah but...most of them are mediocre chain restaurants...not exactly a ringing endorsement of Peterborough as a culinary oasis
doubles?
ACR Roti and Doubles in Scarborough (2680 Lawrence) is the best doubles in Toronto, but if you're willing to settle for something less Cocount Grove (Dundas, east of University)used to be pretty good (though I haven't been since the new owners took over)
who's makes toronto's best veal sandwich???
California Sandwiches on Clermont. Hands down. Commisso Bros. a close second.
Does anyone remember Sherk's on Kingston Rd in West Hill?
They never changed their fryer oil
Kenzo is now downtown. (Ramen.)
Went to the Kenzo on Dundas on its second day of operation. Service was horrible, soup was pretty good. Hopefully the bad service was just opening week jitters. I'll give it another shot
The return of Kenzo Ramen
Giddy up...have tried the ramen at the Yonge location and found it to be pretty authentic. This new location should do well (given the bland chinese restos in the area)
Scarboro Golf Club
My family are members there so I've eaten there more than a few times. I would say that the food is a cut above the average country club fare. Can't go wrong with the salmon or the prime rib. If you're booking for the summer, you should inquire about using the patio. Good Luck
Scarborough Gems
Tara Inn on Kingston Road just west of Midland Ave has undergone and significant facelift. Old tored rugs are gone, cloth table clohes replace plastic, plsatic ferns are all gone as is most of the tacky art, bric-a-barc, etc. Still great wings, fresh cut fries and thick cut onion rings with a creamy chipotle dipping sauce. Good stuff
