Consolidated list of best local eats in Maine (lobster, lobster rolls, clams, pies, ice cream)
I agree! Home Kitchen Cafe rocks! Sharon and Merilyn are fantastic servers, the food is really and truly fresh, best eggs benedict ever, lunch menu is great too, I had the best Reuben I have ever had, the decor is bright and funky, and the food is just really really good. Awesome coffee and they serve wine and beer. I would highly recomment it, for lunch especially. It's the kind of place that just puts you in a good mood :)

Anthony Bourdain in Maine
To where? One of those places on the South End by Jess's seafood that never make it? I haven't seeon or heard anything about an actual reopening as of yet.
Anthony Bourdain in Maine
Which is closed. What a filthy place. I can't believe that with the plethora of incredible places in Rockland he went there, knowing they were closing anyway. Yes I live here and yes I have eaten there. Primo is fantastic, but there are a tone of places that could have been highlighted besides Conte's.
Rockland Maine
Primo. They are opening on Mother's Day again this year, I just saw Price at the co-op where they sell their eggs from their own chickens. Best restaurant, and not just in Rockland.
The Dip Net
I am actually heading down there tonight because I know, it's my night off, but I love it down there and there won't be many summer nights like this. Besides, I get to serve all the awesome food and never get to sit and enjoy it! Plus, I think there may be a gin and tonic with my name on it :) I'll bring my camera and take a bunch of pictures actually. Then probably wander over to the harpoon for some drinks. Don't worry, I am *not* driving..lol.
Help me plan my New England trip. Yeah, I know you hate these sort of vague posts but.........
Oh wow, you have to come to midcoast Maine. It is booming and Travel and Tourism magazine just voted it the second coolest small city in America. Rockland, that is. It is full of amazing restaurants, shopping, art galleries, the gorgeous coast of maine, wineries, so much to do and see, daysailing, I love it here, and right now the weather is perfect. For dining, check out the websites for Primo Restaurant, Francince Bistro, Suzuki's Sushi, In Good Company, so ma,ny places to really have fresh local organic creative cuisine with views of the Maine coastline. I defintiely think midcoast is far better than somewhere more toursity and college town like Bar Harbor/Acadia. Have fun wherever you go, but t ry to make it to Rockland/Camden Maine. You will not be dissapointed, I promise!
The Dip Net
No, come on down to the Dip Net! Chef Margaret and Tim are awesome! I promise you will love it!
The Dip Net
I am working Thursday daytime as a server and Sunday night on the bar, so far I have Friday off, but if anything changes I'll let you know! Yes, the crab thing is way cool, and it really is 100% on the house. So, if you are around on Sunday night or Thursday day, I'll be there! I might come down Friday for lunch with some friends though if the weather is nice, can't think of a better place to spend a sunny happy hour afternoon!
The Dip Net
Yay! Thanks for that, it's nice to hear you had such a great experience. Hope you come back on one of the nights I am bartending :) Ross is great though, I agree, he makes for a fun night. The food is great and Chef Margaret does a great job. There is a lot of teamwork this year, and I am glad it shows!

Hey Shooley, I agree on the miracle whip, I am a native Mainer, it has to be mayo :) The menu is not the same, but honestly it is really good, and they have fresh everything, and the specials change nightly. The wine list I am not sure, I know it is not the same, but it has some good selections. I are there a lot when Scott had it, the food was great, and it really is great now too. You can order the rolls without miracle whip, or with just butter if you like too. There are live jazz bands at times and an on site oyster shucker, a lot of nights the local fisherman come in and we steam crabs and give them away for free and this year there is a full liquor license and a bar on the deck outside. It is defintiely at least worth a try to see for yourself. I know it stinks when something great changes, but in this case, some changes are better, and that is for you guys the customers to decide. I hope you come down and check it out.

Why do people keep saying The DIp Net is closed?! It is *not* closed, I should know, I bartend there Part time. Linda Bean owned the property, and decided this year to exercise her right to run it and did not renew the lease to Scott. It is very very much open and busy. They have free steamed crabs brought in by the lobstermen on occasion, and on certain nights "one buck shuck" where a local guy comes and shucks plump fresh oysters to order on the deck, and last night they had a jazz band. The new number is 372-1112. Not closed at all. Please come down, best view in the Harbor, and the bartender is cool too ;)
Port Clyde-Tenants Harbor
The Dip Net is *not* closed. I ate there last night, packed. It is just not managed by Scott now. It is very much open.
Little Known Hideaway Out of This World...
Mikado is not a sushi restaurant, it is americanized japanese food, with kids items on the menu, and next to nothing for sashimi or sushi, I ordered an ebi sashimi and instead of the beautiful raw sweet maine shrimp that Suzuki's serves, I got jumbo chewy cooked ones. I saw food sitting on the bar for over 20 minutes, while trays of steaming hot glasses were passed over the plates. it is not fair to have those beautiful pictures of authentic sushi on your site and on Village Soup, and then have nothing at all like it. I am married to an Asian, trust me, Suzuki's is authentic. I will never ever go back to Mikado. I am not trying to me mean or insulting, but I was really upset to try it there to be manipulated by the pictures and descriptions on the site, and it is not true. Oh, they do have things like hot dogs and mac and cheese and chicken fingers. See what I mean? Not authentic sushi, and not rightfully upfront about what they serve. With money how it is these days, I get really angry when I feel taken advantage of.
Portland -Korean Church Fair Food
My husband is Korean, we live in Camden but we shop at the Oriental Market twice a month for asian stuff, that is how we found Happy Teriyaki. We loved it, the bulgoki and bipim bap were super, and so was the spicy pork and kimchi soup. Recommend it.
Bizarre Foods Maine episode airs tonight
The cod was at Hugo's, monkfish was on the island. I TiVo'd it and just saw it today. The Hugo's stuff looked soooo good. Yum. I love that place.
Jays Oyster Portland Maine
J's is disgusting. Dirty, warm oysters, rude staff ( yes I am a native ) grey outhouse smellling chowder, just gross gross gross. I hate it when some tourista comes to visit and they read about it somewhere. If it is an in-law, I might take them, ( kidding! ) but there are way better places, down the street is the Old Port Sea Grill. Place is great. *and CLEAN.
Best Oysters Portland, ME?
J's is gross, dirty, warm oysters, horrible burgers, and a rude staff is not very New England. Old Port Sea Grill definitely.
Dinner in Rockland
Same owners as the Black Bull, Mike and Mike own it. I am having lunch there today with a client, I will let you know after ! :)
Dinner in Rockland
Shooley I would probably hit Rustica or Black bull. Rustica is better I think, but neither place is foo-foo ;) Lily's is probably not what you are looking for. I really like a lot of the stuff at Rustica.
Atlantica in Camden
Atlantica is nice and the food is solid. Not particularly innovative, but fresh and well prepared. The setting and view are really nice as well. The Edge's pizza night is great, and a lot of fun, the pizzas are excellent. Enjoy!
Portland, ME and surrounding areas?
There is a brand new place right next to the Sun Oriental Market on Congress Street. Happy Teriyaki Restaurant. Just went there last weekend with hubby, he is Korean, and liked it a lot. Not huge, but really clean, and fresh, with awesome Bip Im Bap, Bul-go-ki, Kimchi, etc. It is far fresher and better than Nara.
Rockland, ME: In Bad Company
So glad you liked it. We were there on the same night, small world. Jim had the tomato soup as well and loved it and I had the app of honeyed chevre with pancetta and melon, oh lord, amazing! I had the crispy flounder and he had the organic ribeye, and it was wonderful.
Did you happen to notice a tall redhead and a Jackie Chan look-a-like sitting by the bar? :) Next time say hi if you do!
Camden/Rockland (ME) August 2008
Yes I knew it was a cash bar and a beneft as well. Soiree sounded better for a lovely summer evening thing tho ;)
We were there as well, then we walked down to In Good Co., but they were closed for a private function so we went to The Bull for a martini. What a gorgeous night out.
JMF,
I think it was not a mistake, I forget to add on a bottle of sparkiling water as well which was 12 or so, but when I scanned the reciept the prices were correct. My glasses of wine ( 2 ) were 14.00 each. so forty bucks for two glasses of wine and a bottle of water. It was still all in all a great dinner.

Hi Jonathan,
Your reply is very accurate. I just wanted to add a little something. We went to Francine last night, and they just added on that new larger dining area and expanded the bar. It looks fantastic and the place was mobbed, with a fairly young crowd at the new larger bar.
So, on to dinner. We had two glasses of wine, and two guiness, an app each, no salad course and two entrees. No dessert or coffee. The total before tip was $160.00. I don't know if the prices have increased but I just don't recall spending that much there before without getting more courses or at least dessert and port after. Yes, the food was stellar, amazing, wonderful. But $200 with tip is a bit much I think, even for Francine. Have you noticed anything at all, or have you been since the renovations?
There is a rooftop soiree with apps and wine tonight on the top of Harbor Square gallery downtown. That is one of the things I love about Rockland, always something cool to do. If you are in town you should stop by.
Lastly, I so agree on lobsters at home, way better, and cheaper, and much more fun!
What ingredients make your heart go pitter pat?
blue cheese
aged

port
pemaquid

bouquet garni
tarragon
citrus
roe
sashimi
figs
honey
yummy!
In Good Company
Their appetizers are all good, heavy on the cheese, which I love. They have a great baked garlic head with your choice of cheese, I like it with local goat cheese, yum. For meals, I love their salmon or their beef tenderloin. So very good. enjoy!
Camden/Rockland (ME) August 2008
Oh I so agree. Cancel Primo and eat at Francine. I just called this morning and got a Friday night res. Or, go to Primo earlier, have some apps at the very nice bar, then dine at Francine, make a night of it.
In Good Company is definitely a go to place, even if you just go in for some wonderful cheese of before dinner wine and little nibbles. Have fun!
Port Clyde-Tenants Harbor
No such luck on bands or dancing down that way...just a lot of locals and a lot of adult beverage intake. Have fun!
Cassoulet I ate at the DipNet last weekend too....hmmmm ;)
Port Clyde-Tenants Harbor
Hi BusbyB,
I lived in Port for years, now I am in Rockland, but I have never had anything but amazing food at the Dip Net. It is so much more than a typical seafood shack. Whatever you do, avoid the Harpoon at all costs, the food is horrible. It is still wicked fun for drinks though! Cod End is alright, but DipNet really shines again this year, same chefs, same owner, same servers, so you know it is consistently great. Have fun!

Maine - Good, Bad, or Eh...ok?
No, they serve meals, not a huge menu, but really nicely done, they have a cold filet of beef that is really excellent.
