Connecticut scallop rolls: Show & Tell!

My vote for a scallop roll has to go to Lenny & Joe's. LOVE their scallops and shrimp.

Any Good Buffets In CT?

Last couple of times we tried the buffets, the quality had gone way down. Seemed like it was a better value for the money to just go to one of the restaurants.

I second the Hunt Breakfast at Griswold Inn in Essex. We went there a couple of months ago and we loved it. Not a huge selection of foods, but everything was cooked perfectly. It was cheap to, in comparison to a lot of other places. I believe it was less then $20 a person.

Best Doughnuts in CT?

They are still in Clinton. Drive by their all the time and was just in there a couple of weeks ago. Amazing donuts!! The smell from the parking lot just blows you away.

Thanks for the schooling in Japanese Wagyu. We were leaning towards Cut and I think between the answers here and on the other thread, we will be making a reservation there!!

Las Vegas- Kobe or Japanese Wagyu steaks??

My husband and I are heading out to Vegas in April and we are looking for a good steakhouse (preferably on or near the strip) that serves a good Kobe or Japanese Wagyu steak. I have looked around and online and found Cut, Stripsteak and Steakhouse, are there any others?

They all have Wagyu, but can't seem to find some actual "kobe". Is it even available in Vegas? I did read the thread from about a year ago but was wondering if there were any new places or opinions.

Thanks

Fish and Chips? Where's the best in New Haven, Central CT or Naugatuck Valley Area?

My favorite place for a good english style fish and chips is Royal Fish and Chips in Meriden. Thick pieces of Icelandic cod fried up with a thick batter and served with lots of those little crunchies that always seem to break away from the batter when being fried. Great with either malt vinegar or their tartar sauce.

Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale in Madison and Westbrook has a good breaded fish and chips. They have their all you can eat fried fish on Wednesdays at both of their locations. If you are really hungry or have a good sized appetite then you will get your monies worth on Wednesdays.

Abalone in the Monterey Bay area

I know that there is the Sardine Factory and one other, but was wondering if this was it? When we lived out there (70's and 80's) you could find at a lot of places.

Looking forward to having the sand dabs, don't think I ever had them before, also the petrale sole. The calamari...........yummy. Here on the east coast they just cut it into rings. I so want a calamari steak. I think I will be eating nothing but seafood on this trip.

Was you post supposed to have a link in it?

Homemade corned beef hash in New Haven/ Fairfield county?

I live in New Haven county, but go just a bit outside of it to Westbrook where we have found our favorite corned beef hash at Christy's in Westbrook. Huge chunks of freshly made corned beef cooked with potatoes and onions. It is always excellent and we have yet to find another in the area who makes one comparable. If you are willing to drive another 10 minutes, give it a shot.

Bobby's Burger Palace, Mohegan Sun

I was wondering about this place. Good to know that they have decent burgers. I will give it a try the next time we are you there and are in the mood for some burgers and fries.

Abalone in the Monterey Bay area

We will be heading out to the Monterey Bay area in the beginning of next year and one of the things that we have to do is go to a restaurant that has abalone. I have poked around and am having a horrible time finding it anywhere. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant to get some at? Thanks

Back to North Conway

Great review!! Still haven't gotten up to Stairway Cafe, but after reading all the great reviews, I need to put it on my list to try next time we are up there. We tried Yesterdays over in Jackson for the first time a couple months ago and really liked them. The pancakes were huge (and I want to say that they didn't mark up the REAL maple syrup, but can't remember) and the hunters hash was chock full of steak and peppers. My husband loved it and it's one place we will be going back to.

I remember seeing Priscilla's Cafe but didn't go. So glad to see a review on it. Hopefully, with some time and practice it will get better.

Sorry to hear about your lackluster food at May Kellys. It's one of our favorites and we have always found that food to be excellent and we love the family feel of the place. I'm hoping that you just got a bad night with the corned beef and that it's not a sign of things slipping.

Clam Cakes in CT?

I second Sea Swirl in Mystic. I have had the clam cakes on a couple of occasions. Excellent. Seems like all the other places in CT that I have tried them, they were doughy, with hardly any clams in them.

Any Good Buffets In CT?

Ugh, Hometown Buffet is food. But not all that great. It's mass produced, most of it frozen before hand, and sits around under lights. I have eaten their a few times and while it is certianly passable, not some place I plan on returning to. Great for a super tight budget or for a large family.

Waters Edge in Westbrook has an amazing brunch buffet on Sundays. Carving station, omelet station, raw bar and the last time I was there they made crepes to order. Here is the menu. http://www.watersedge-resort.com/pdfs...

Can't think of anymore, all the the Marriot in Mystic did an amazing Mother's Day brunch buffett but it is rather pricey. Around $50 a person I believe.

White Castles off of I-95

Passadumkeg - No, actually, my DH grew up in NJ and has fond memories of White Castle. He always says that if we are ever near one that we have to stop so that I can try a fresh, real slider and not what you can buy in the frozen food section at the grocery store. All though the movie was cute also!!!

Now you guys have me wanting to go to other places instead of White Castle! White Rose? Mmmm, you know we have to go north to get back to CT, so we could have White Castle on the way down and then White Rose on the way back up. Or Visa Versa.

Sounds like a good plan to me!! Thanks for all the help.

F77- Thanks for the tip on the google maps. I will look into it.

Ishkabibble- I did check the White Castle site, however, not being familiar with NJ meant that I had no idea on where to start looking or where any of those towns listed where let alone if they were easy off and back on the highway.

White Castles off of I-95

We will be coming down 95 from CT headed over to Lancaster county PA and I'm looking to see if there are any White Castle's that are located within easy driving distance's from 95.

My DH raves about them, since he grew up in NJ, and I would love to suprise him with a treat on our trip. We aren't going till September of this year, but I like to plan early!! lol

Thanks!!! Heidi

Also, just wanted to say that I have checked the White Castle website, but it's hard to tell if they are doable from 95 and which one would be best.

Good Butcher/Fresh Meat & Poultry in Eastern CT

I second Beaver Brook Farm in Old Lyme.

I have never really liked lamb, or I should say the lamb that was available in the grocery stores and restaurant It always had such a gamey taste and after a few bites I just couldn't eat any more. Beaver Brook on the other hand has amazing lamb.

Delivery in the Quarter

Johnny's Po-Boys delivers in the quarter. They have been around for along time and are known for the amazing po-boys. We also had breakfast there, the catfish was done perfectly and the bisquit was amazing.

Our hotel had a menu in our room. I have looked online and haven't been able to find one. Here is their info. . 511 St. Louis. 524-8129.

Out of all the places that deliver, they seem to be the most "New Orleans". Try them, they are really good.

Mexican Food Hell.

I grew up out west and moved here when I was 18. That doesn't make me an expert on Mexican food, by any means, as everyones tastes are different, but I have a good base to go on.

We have had a horrible time finding good Mexican out here. Most of them are "New England Mexican". Blech........

Lots of great places listed on here that I'm going to have to try. Maybe we will find some place new. We tend to always end up at Puerto Vallarta's. They are in Middletown, Cromwell, Avon, W. Hartford, Newington and Southington.

They have a good selection of "american" mexican food, such as quesadilla's, fajitias, nachos and other things that people seems to always associate with mexican food, like burriots, tacos and the like. What I love about them though is that they have so much more to offer then just this.

-homemade tamales
-spicy, hot, muy caliente salsa for the asking
-freshly fried chips
-chili rellenos made with fresh chiles
-tons of different mole's
-lots of other great foods that are more "authentic" then tacos and burritos.

Here is the link to their menu. http://www.puertovallartausa.com/menu...

New Haven deliveries?

I hopw this reply isn't to late. I live in the New Haven area and here are some places that are local that would be able to deliever some good food to your friend. Hope she is feeling better.

There is http://www.ediblearrangements.com/ They are local, just up in Hamden and deliver to the New Haven area. They do great arrangements of fresh fruit.

Also in Hamden is Bon Appetit. http://bonappetitct.com/ They can make you a great basket with a wide selection of stuff from cheeses, baked goods and gourmet items.

There is also Chapel Open Air Market - Papa & Sons. They don't have a website, but there number is 203.624.1285. They delivery daily and have been around for almost 100 years. They can do fresh fruits and other gourmet things. Not sure about baked goods.

Hope this helps!!

Katz's in New Haven

I have had the pastrami sandwiche there and it was good. Much better then any other I have tasted in the area. Good flavor but low on fat. Very tender. I haven't tried anything else on the menu but plan an going back since I only work about a block from them.
