i am jealous as well! i had bahian style moqueca in salvador many years ago & have yet to find one here in the states...i even e-mailed jonathan gold about it & he responded that noone in l.a. is making it, but that he makes an amazing version (needless to say, he didn't invite me over or share the recipe with me!). is the capixaba version as rich as the bahian one?

Any MEZCAL LOVERS? Where can I find good Mezcal in L.A.?

i fell in love w/mezcal when i visited oaxaca a few years ago & i definitely prefer the smokier varieties. i don't remember brands, but i've had a few tasty shots at both malo in silverlake and at guelaguetza.

What to eat @ Malo in Silverlake

habanero creme salsa is delicious! i usually get the al pastor and want to lick the pan...and i love the shrimp and avocado salad, incredibly refreshing.

i'm admittedly no steak connoisseur, but i like the smoke house in burbank...charbroiled flat iron steak plus soup or salad...vegetables and a starch for $21.95...delicious!!! bing crosby & bob hope used to eat there so you know it must be good;-)

Echo Park Taco Trucks

i live in echo park as well & i like to venture over to hollywood...the "el matador" truck on western just north of santa monica blvd. has some of the best al pastor tacos i've had in town.

also, i would recommend checking out the great taco hunt blog:

bandini has tried them all!

il Capriccio Wood Fire Pizzeria

on my one visit to il capriccio, i thought the pizza was okay, certainly better than a lot out there, but not as good as vito's (formerly on vermont). however, i won't be going back because the man who helped me (the owner?) was a complete jerk...which leads me to avoid a restaurant unless the food is so good i can't stop myself!

Vito's -- it's perfect!

is this the same vito's that was on vermont? oh, how i miss their pizza...nothing else like it in the city...please, tell me it's true!

chicken burrito

i was wondering about tacos via corona as well...the last two times i went there the food was horrible...dried out rice, cold cheese, stringy & nasty chicken...what happened!?!?! i used to love their burritos...oh well, the burritos at tere's on melrose are always really delicious.

lunch places at Barrington/Wilshire

definitely lemon moon...i used to work near bundy & olympic and would walk there almost every day for lunch, i loved getting a 3-salad plate and just changing it up each day...akbar on wilshire is okay, certainly not the best indian i've ever eaten, but decent for a quick lunch.

Pete's Cafe Update

After reading mixed reviews here about pete's cafe downtown, we decided to take a chance on it after seeing 'who's afraid of virginia woolf?' last night...and I must say that our experience was really great. Got there about 11:30pm, we were quickly seated in the restaurant, server came over right after to get drink orders and returned just as quickly with drinks. We both had the Hellman burger, mine with bleu cheese fries (tasted excellent, but got quite soggy from the cheese), my wife had hers with the garlic basil fries which were delicious. Burgers were perfectly cooked and had really nice flavor. All in all, food was really good, service was friendly, quick and attentive. I'll definitely keep Pete's on the list for late night eats when downtown.
