Bistro 7 or Chloe?

Do you or your boyfriend like ribs? If so I'd say go to Chloe. My boyfriend and I used to live right down the street and he was in love with those ribs. It's a huge portion and I think he saw it as some type of eating challenge. From what I remember, I think they serve it with a side of homemade mac and cheese and some type of green. I'm pretty sure he has dreams about those ribs. Everything I've had from Chloe has been wonderful. I've never been to Bistro 7.

Philly: did some homework, would like some feedback

Make sure you don't go to Reading Terminal on a Sunday. A lot of places are not open, the Amish in particular. I do my produce shopping there on Sundays and I often run into disappointed tourists.

Also I second Franklin Fountain for ice cream.

And please skip DiNardo's. My boss makes me go there at least once a week and it's just not a place I can recommend.

Kanella -Greek, 10th and Spruce

Does anyone know if this is open? I know they had a special Easter lunch last Sunday but I don't know if they are open regular hours yet. I can't find a phone number. It's where Logan's used to be.

Old City Fri night drinks recs??

There aren't a lot of places in Old City where you can actually have a conversation! Maybe Tangerine? I went into Positano Coast last weekend for a quick drink before catching a movie at the Ritz and their bar was beautiful. It wasn't too loud, very attractive, good atmosphere, lively but not the usual Old City crowd.

Maoz on Walnut-is it open yet?

Skip Maoz and go to Mama's Vegetarian, 20th between Market and Chestnut. Much better falafel and homemade pita.

Good Chinese Food?

My family and I have been going to Shao Lan Kung for years for their house special fried chicken and garlic snow pea leaves. The chicken is great. The best of fried chicken, crispy skin without being greasy and gross.

Fondue in Philadelphia

I just went to Beneluxx for the first time last weekend. I did not have the fondue but the beers I sampled were great and everyone I was with had a lot of fun washing the glasses and trying new beers and wines. I did have a venison sausage wrapped in a crepe, covered in some weird chocolate like sauce which was awful.

Xochitl or Lolita?

I went to Xochitl for Restaurant Week in the summer and it was excellent. I had been there for drinks and appetizers before. The portions and options were great for a restaurant week menu which tends to contain smaller portions and less protein options. Also they extended their restaurant week for another whole week after the official one, making it easier to get a reservation. Their cocktail and tequila list is great. I've also been to Lolita but not for Restaurant Week. The food is also good but I think you will get more for your money at Xochitl which may be more expensive on a regular night than Lolita.

new asian market in northern liberties

I went last weekend. I have heard that Asian markets have very fresh fish but it didn't look like they were doing any filets at the fish counter. They had a selection of filets pre packaged in a refrigerator so I bought the only one that was properly labeled which was cod. It didn't have a sell by date though so I was wary. I actually have never cooked cod before, I usually only make tilapia, tuna or salmon at home. Maybe I didn't cook it right but it was very fishy and had an unpleasant taste, perhaps due to lack of freshness. But also it could just have been that I don't have a lot of experience preparing cod, I don't know. I don't think I'll buy fish from there again though. They did have about 5 different varieties of bok choy which was very fresh. I bought a big bag. I also bought some frozen chicken dumplings which were great. I have a few different tofu products that I haven't tried yet. A lot of items had MSG which is not uncommon given that it is an Asian market, but I am allergic so I was pretty limited as to what frozen products I could purchase. They had tons of jerky which my boyfriend loves so perhaps we'll go back there for that. I'd definitely go back if I needed something for an Asian dish. They have a wide variety of products and the store is very clean and organized. Parking is also a plus.

Also, if you ever need some type of aphrodisiac tea, they have plenty!!! Multiple varieties for both men and women!

Any suggestions for Xmas Day dinner in Center City

You would have to try ethnic restaurants like Chinese, Japanese, maybe Middle Eastern? Would that work?

Chinese for Jewish Xmas Eve

In terms of Chinatown- Shao Lang Kung is great but you are right, too small for 9 people. Davids Mai Lah Wah is good and bigger than Shao Lang Kung. Four Rivers is also good but I've only gotten taken out from there so I'm not sure about eat in.

With 9 people you may want to try Singapore. It's vegetarian Kosher, and the food is decent. Very large menu but the main reason I suggest it is because they have a private room upstairs with Karaoke! The owner is very funny and always greets his guests with "Shalom!", the restaurant is decorated with menorahs and upstairs in the private room are two giant Bar Mitzvah portraits! It's very funny. When you ask the owner who the boys are in the portraits he says it's him! I took a large group there and we did a pre fix and it was a great time! I think it ended up being around $15-$17 per person.

Mexican food in Philly

I have been there on Saturday, early evening, and it was pretty packed but we put our name in, went to the bar, and were seated before even finishing our drinks. No problems with service or noise.

el vez review (long)

It's not fake Mexican, it's Americanized Mexican, just like El Vez and Lolita. That's why I recommended it. Laz Cazuelas is great but don't go there when it's busy or you'll never be seated, your food will be ice cold when it eventually comes out, and they'll make you drink from styrofoam cups because they've run out of glassware!!! I've been there many times though and only had a bad experience like that once.

best food truck around temple?

I can't believe Mel and Lina are gone! I ate there almost every day. She made homemade motzah ball soup and kugel on Passover. I loved them.

Skip El Vez!!!! Have you tried Cantina Los Caballitos?? (1651 E. Passyunk in South Phila) It is the same owners as Royal Tavern. Very good!

The last time I went to El Vez (and I live down the street), I ordered the tacos as an entre thinking it would be entree size since it was the same price as the entrees....the server failed to tell me they were actually three small silver dollars with two bites of filling!!! I had to eat off everyone else's plates! It was awful!

Mexican food in Philly

Try Cantina Los Caballitos, 1651 E. Passyunk in South Phila. It is the same owners as Royal Tavern. Also more authentic try La Lupe (right next to Genos Steaks I think) or Las Cazuelas on 4th and Girard.

Eulogy belgian tav What happened

I wouldn't give them another shot. I was there over the summer and had the same experience with the mussels. I had to spit them out they were so chewy it made me sick. The waiter took them off our bill but I will never be going back. Stick to Monks!

Where should we go for my 50th birthday?

I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet but have you tried Fork? It has been my family's "special occasion" restaurant for many years. We go there for birthdays...my college graduation..ect. Great food, reasonable prices, cozy, and I would say, in your words "simplicity done really well". You should call them for the most recent menu because it changes daily.

Actually Ellen Yin, the owner of Fork hosted a Food Tour last night that was a blast! Maybe I am still reeling from that experience! Good luck!

Has anyone said Tinto? It may be difficult to get a reservation but have the concierge at the Rittenhouse call for you.

Good eats during weekend getaway to Philly?

note from a former Starr employee (Starr owes Morimoto and some other themed restaurants that you should avoid on your visit)--stick with the sushi at Morimoto. The other items on their menu are overpriced and not so great.

Special Occasion Vegetarian, maybe near Theater District

Hello! I am from Philadelphia and will be in Manhattan in early Dec. to do dinner and a show. This is part of my Hanukkah gift to my boyfriend and he is a vegetarian. The show we are seeing is on 42nd between 9th and 10th. I'd love to take him to an all vegetarian restaurant with or without fake meat products. Sometimes he's not so into the fake meat but if it's good I think we would do it. It doesn't have to be anything super fancy and ethic is always great. I just want him to have a fabulous meal where he can order anything off the menu, not just a plate of pasta and veggies :(

We could even take a cab if there aren't any restaurants near the theater. The main thing is that it is completely veg. and fabulous. Thanks!

Traveling from San Fransisco to Seattle

My boyfriend and I are flying into San Fransisco and driving up to Portland and then to Seattle. We are stopping overnight somewhere (no idea where yet) in between San Fran and Portland. Any suggestions for places to try on our drive up, and in Portland or Seattle are welcome. We are young travelers on a budget who also enjoy great food. Nothing fancy, just good! Help!
