Gloucester - Duckworth Bistro or Franklin Cafe?

We have been to both and I would pick Duckworth's whole heartedly. That is not necessarily a negative for The Franklin but that Duckworth's is just plain fabulous !

Not laughing, been going to Houlihan's just for those wings and to tolerate their mundane beer selction. Those wings are really excellent !!

Best Chicken Wings-Northern NJ

We're looking for the best chicken wings in Northern NJ/Rockland County. Let me preface that we are not in search of just Buffalo Wings but a variety of different styles and sauces to select from.

Houston's Cole Slaw

Christina:

I have made this version a few times already and it is delicious. Don't skimp on the parsley and scallions as they make the slaw. Also, I do not chop my slaw, but shred to what is found in typical cole slaws.

Best pizza pie in Northern NJ(Bergen)

First, let me say that I am a thin crust pizza person. Not really into toppings including an over abundance of cheese. When the sauce is dark, I already know that pizza is heading downhill. Currently, my favorite local pizza is Ray's in Cresskill. It is not as thin as Kinchley's but also does not have that cracker quality to the crust. Nice, flavorful crust, clean tasting sauce without the cheese looking like it wants to slide away from the crust as you attempt a bite. To reflect on some of the other pizza mentioned in this entry. TPR is fair for pizza, thick crust, but OK in a pinch. Roman Inn gets a similiar comment. Cassie's has a delicious Margarita pie but they are a bit pricey across the board. A place called The Right Pizza in Teaneck was absolutely horrible, thick crust, disgusting sauce. Every time I drive by it. I can't believe it is still open. I love pizza and could eat it daily but there is a dearth of good pizza in BC.

I like Chez Cheese in Tenafly for soup. Great mushroom, butternut squash. Good sandwiches and amazingly enough, though I have been to better fromageries.

Looking for decaf lapsang souchong tea or substitute for braise recipe.

I went to another tea shop yesterday asking for decaf lapsang but was told they did not have any. The sales associate asked why I needed decaf to which I explained my dilemma regarding my wife and the dish I intend to make. She informed me that the caffeine in tea is released in the initial 30 seconds of steeping. You may pour hot water in the tea, let it steep for 30 seconds and discard the water. Then using the same tea, pour in additional hot water and allow to steep as you normally would. Interesting.

Looking for decaf lapsang souchong tea or substitute for braise recipe.

I'd like to make the braised hangar steak recipe made with this smoked tea from Ming Tsai but my wife cannot have caffeine. Therefore, I am looking for a decaf version or a reasonable substitute. I have not seen a decaffeinated version of this tea and was wondering what using decaf black tea and adding some liquid smoke would be like. Any ideas, information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if Boston is the midpoint but when I looked at on Yahoo maps it seemed like it was around Woburn but I'm sure I don't know the area as well as many people on here.

Food/Wine/Beer Suggestion Midpoint Dedmam/Salem MA

Friends of ours just bought a house in Dedham MA and we are going to the North Shore/Salem this weekend. We'd like to meet them for something dinner/brunch/glass of wine/beer. I'm not sure what the midpoint between those to places are but would love to hear some suggestions. Thanks.

Best / Favorite 5 restaurants on North Shore??

We are from NJ but love the North Shore and go there frequently. We love Franklin Cafe in Gloucester for dining and the Old Spot in Salem for pub fare and beer. Gula Gula Cafe in Salem is also very nice for a good tap list. We are dying to get to Duckworth's, hopefully in January. We have not been impressed with Grapevine, Alchemy, My Place (overpriced for the view food). Rockport in general is not a food destination although Sea Shack is passable. Bella Verona in Salem is very adequate and the prices are friendly. Red's is a definate for breakfast and for clams we always go to Woodman's.

January 2010 COTM: Recommendations Please!

STIR by Barbara Lynch, chef/owner of several restaurants in Boston including No.9 Park which I had the opportunity to dine. It is a wonderful dining experience and I would love to make some of the dishes from the book.

Indian on 6th St. that doesn't suck?

Just went to Brick Lane a couple of days ago. Thought the food was predominantly delicious, lamb madras , chicken tikka. The onion pancake was very dense and non-descript and could have been served warmer. The meat dishes could have been more generous with their respective meats but the sauce was balanced, just right between heat and flavor. Bottomless basmati. The service was attentive but most servers were robotic and did not have the ability to be spontaneous. The bill for 2 prior to tip was $57 (including sparkling water & rice pudding). Brick Lane won the coin flip this trip, will do Banjara next time.

BYOB for E. 6th St. Indian

My friends and I sans heat fearing wives will be dining on the infamous E. 6th Street Curry Row. I have been reading the boards and see that Banjara and Brick Street Curry House seem to be liked by many, however, we are are looking for a potential bill reduction with the inclusion of a BYOB. Any suggestions?

Chef Central/Paramus kids cooking school?

God yes, you've seen the commercials during Top Chef for this store. The still shots of their wares just makes your mouth water. I've been there, so I know. They have adult classes as well and all the students in the class have a opportunity to work on their stove !

**AUGUST 2009 COTM Suggestion Thread** [Ottolenghi Chosen]

I'd like to take this venture out of the kitchen for the summer and on to the grill, MEDITERRANEAN GRILLING by Diane Kochilas. Healthly, cool cuisine for the season. As an aside, I only made one recipe from Ottolenghi, the Shallot, Potato & Goat Cheese Tatin but quite honestly I thought it was not very good. Just my opinion, but not a negative advertisement for the remaining recipes.

Lunching in Lambertville/New Hope [moved from Tristate board]

I am looking for a nice place to have lunch in and around this area this upcoming weelend. A place with a decent wine selection would be nice. We have eaten at Inn of the Hawke (decent), grazed at Marsha Brown (a little expensive but nice), Cafe Galleria (poor), Triumph Brewing (variable). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Just a thought, any comments on Ship Inn in Milford NJ? Thanks.

Seeking NJ wine discount store

I recommend Hudson Wine Market in Fort Lee. It's in a mall with Borders near the intersection of Lemoine and Main. Great prices on some good wines.

Bergen County Italian

Max's is horrible, definately would leave that one alone. I ate at Buongiorno's when it first opened and was given a good review in The Record. Not impressed at that time but it has been quite awhile. I have been interested in checking out DiPalma for awhile, so bearing in mind how difficult it is in Bergen County to eat for that price, I would totally give it a shot.

Barleywine/Cheese Pairings

I got my cheeses ready to go as follows: Tilsiter, La Chevre Noir, Lincolnshire Poacher, Appenzeller and Stilton. Got a piece of the Rogue Smokey Bleu to satisfy my own fetish with smoke. Thanks for your input.

Barleywine/Cheese Pairings

Looking for recommendations of cheeses that would match with a collection of approximately a dozen American Barleywines for an upcoming tasting. Would like recommendations from all milks but I would say that I am solid on including Stilton so we can skip the bleu category.

River Vale - new to area - need recs

Been there a few times, mostly for bar food and once for dinner. We thought it was good (2 1/2 stars). Bar food is adequate, good pizza. A place to stop in for a snack without being overly expensive.

Burger/Pubs in Bergen?

Who would have thunk that finding a burger in Bergen County would be problematic, but it is. Firstly, Griffin's in Cresskill has been repeatedly poor and hopefully for the last time. Been to Jersey Boys in New Milford and had their inconsistently cooked to order burger (great pizza though). Davey's Locker in Montvale has good burgers (yummy Irish Whiskey Cake) but their tap is just the regular fare. Charlie Browns in Tenafly has a solid buger and a great salad bar. Finnegan's in Westwood is good as well, but rather get fries rather than chips with my burger. Sometimes they have a really good brew on their special tap. Hungry Peddler, well, probably better to remain hungry. We haven't been to the new Bike but the prior rendition wasn't anything special. Unfortunately, if we want a good burger, we trek into the city to JG Melon on 3rd Aveune in the 70's. Awesome burgers, great cottage fries and gotta have me a Bloody Bull. Check it out !!
