Interesting Restaurants Around Legacy Place in Dedham? (It seems to be all chains...)

Tasos in Norwood (Greek/American food) is just down the road next to the Norwood airport (~5 min drive). Hiddenboston recommended it to us and we had lunch there last weekend. It's a great find and beware that portions are huge. Really liked the spanakopita & dolmas.

Dumpling Cafe choices for a take-out party?

How about some stir-fry noodle dishes? They have a vegetarian noodle dish and I thought that was pretty good.

Conference in Cambridge by day, visiting museums at night - Where to eat? (Tight budget!!!)

From the MFA/Gardner Museum, it's not too far a walk to the restaurant row on Peterborough Street. There's a shabu place, El Pelon for cheap Mexican food, or Rod Dee for Thai.

Chinatown Bakeries: Best Pineapple Bun

The coconut filling oblong ones are Cocktail buns... "gai mei bao"

I'm confused about the discussion above btw pineapple bun and lai wong bao. Lai wong baos (custard buns) are steamed, with white soft dough (like other steamed bus).

Pineapple buns, AFAIK, are baked, and has a yellow dough with a somewhat cracked surface on the top, and no filling.

Those 2 are very different in my book...

Japanese style hot dogs in Ctown: Fei Fan Eatery

Can you or someone else enlighten me? We stopped by last weekend to check it out; we just ate lunch at Xinh Xinh so we didn't have room for a hot dog.

The woman at the counter told us that they're regular American hot dogs with Japanese-style toppings. Is that what a Japadog is too? I got an impression (from this post) that the hot dogs themselves are different than the usual american hot dog. (We conversed in Cantonese, so I don't think I misunderstood her.)

Boston Japan Festival in Copley

We too gave up when we saw the l-o-n-g lines for both the food tickets and for the food itself. Since this is the first time they did this, I suspect the organizers didn't expect such a huge turn-out. It was very disorganized, no doubt. I was most interested in trying the ramen (2 stalls). One stall said they're coming to Boston (presumably opening a resto?). The okonomiyaki looked good too, as did the squid yakitori. We gave up and went to Chinatown instead. Wonder if they will host this again next year? If so, they'll need a bigger space (eg, Gov't center) and perhaps pre-sell food tickets online....

One of the Kind - Super 88 Allston

2 of us had a pretty good meal there today. I didn't try ordering the House Special Pork - just assumed they won't have it. We shared a bowl of Szechuan Beef Noodle soup, and an order of steamed House Special dumplings. Plus 2 cumin lamb on a stick. Enjoyed everything we ordered. The noodle soup is v tasty, with very tender beef and nice chewy noodles.

Any recent reports? What else is good there?

Local Asparagus

Verrill Farm tweeted 1 week ago about their asparagus going to be ready in 1 week - no updates yet. https://twitter.com/#!/verrillfarm/status/192716840814907392

Wilson Farm tweeted last Thursday their own asparagus was available https://twitter.com/#!/wilsonfarm/status/193007188296474625 However, when I went on Friday morning, all I could find was CA asparagus.

Safest bet is to call both farms before heading out. Russo's only have CA asparagus, I don't think they ever buy local ones.

DD's Bavarian Cream donut, extinct?

Was at the DD at Theatre District (corner of Tremont & Boylston; next to Emerson College) last night, and they had a healthy supply of Bavarian Cream. I never pay attention to Bavarian Cream until this thread, so I don't know if it's something this DD usually carry or not.

signs of Spring? sorrel? ramps? fresh green almonds? chervil? mache? morels?

I was at Russo's today~

Ramps $17.98/lb
Fiddleheads $14.98/lb

Passed on both as they're just a bit too pricey for my taste!

Peking Duck for 2 in Chinatown?

I'm looking for more of a set menu with other dishes + traditional peking duck. But I guess the King Fung/ China King all-duck 3-course menu will suffice. BUT - is that menu designed for a whole table (like 8-10?) I like duck but don't want to be eating it every day for the next 2 weeks!

Peking Duck for 2 in Chinatown?

I'm usually a noodle-soup kind of person when it comes to Chinatown. Lately, DC mentioned a crave for Peking duck. There's just the 2 of us - are there restaurants in Chinatown that serves a 2-person portion? Preferably part of a set menu? Do I need to call ahead to reserve? TIA

Saturday Brunch in DT Boston?

Friends of ours (with 2 children - 7 and a toddler) are visiting Boston in a couple of weeks. We've decided to meet for Saturday Brunch, but of course I'm at a loss as to options as DC & I don't do brunch much at all. They are staying at the Omni Parker House, so I assume they don't want to wander too far for a meal.

So far, I've come up with 2 Sat brunch places-
Beacon Hill Bistro, and
Bistro du Midi

Any other ideas? If not, which one of the 2 above is "better"? TIA

Japanese style hot dogs in Ctown: Fei Fan Eatery

Sounds great! I can't wait to try it out?

Off-topic, does that mean sub city is no longer there?

Birthday dinner restaurant

P.S. Anyone been to the re-opened Journeyman? Comments?

Birthday dinner restaurant

Thanks all for your suggestions! I'll check the menus and forward the suggestions to my sis-in-law and see what she thinks.

Birthday dinner restaurant

I'm a bit at a loss - trying to come up with a restaurant for husband & sis-in-law's birthdays.

Just to give you an idea of where we've been for "celebratory" meals in recent years:
Benatti (now closed)
The Blue room
Il Casale
Bergamot
Bondir
ICOB (Sun brunch only)
Lumiere
80 Thoreau

We don't want to splurge, so no Clio, O Ya, Menton etc. We like places that serve seasonal menus and preferably from local sources. Ideally entrees < $25. Not a big fan of small plates restaurants, nor trendy/noisy/loud "to be seen" spots. We prefer places in Boston/Cambridge instead of the suburbs (sis-in-law lives in Cambridge and doesn't have a car).

We are looking to dine on a Saturday - but we can do Saturday lunch too if there are places that have good food but too trendy for us at night. Thanks in advance.

Who can tell me what I ate at Gaga Seafood?

I'm sure there are others who can translate better than I can. Here's a jab:

Black (?) grouper
Stone fish (literal translation)
Another type of Bass
bamboo shell fish
Curry crab
?
Twin lobster
Shanhai hairy crab

R column top to bottom
scallop
raw oyster
"Gui Fei" (aka concubine) clam
Live shrimp
geoduck
"silver" bass
eel
large lobster

At the very bottom in the middle: "blind" bass

February 2012 Openings and Closings

Moe's Southwest Grill is opening a branch in Waltham on Main Street, right next door to Mulan (at the street corner). It's not opened yet but looks like it'll be ready before end of the month. Its location used to be a corner convenience store.

Its facebook page says it'll open on Feb 23. 831 Main Street Waltham

February 2012 Fresh & local markets, farm stands, CSA, Delivery etc

hyde, if you're asking specifically about the Wayland Winter farmers market, it is held every Saturday at Russell's Garden Center. More info here:
http://www.russellsgardencenter.com/wayland_winter_mkt.html

Burnshirt Valley & Caledonia Farms are there - they have beef & pork. when we went on opening day last month, there were 2 other meat vendors with lamb and beef. Can't recall if anyone was selling chicken...

February 2012 Fresh & local markets, farm stands, CSA, Delivery etc

We'll probably head out to the Wayland Farmers Market this month to stock up on local meats.

Help with favorite quick eats near Symphony Hall?

Sebastian's has been open for at least a month or two. It always looks empty when I walk pass it, tho I don't always pass by during peak meal times.

Help with favorite quick eats near Symphony Hall?

Not sure which Vietnamese place you're referring to, but I much prefer Pho Basil on Mass Ave over Pho and I.

Moby Dick is very fast too; I had their lamb stew over rice tonight. A bit salty but otherwise quick and filling.

Panera is reliable and quick.

BTW, has anyone tried the new Sebastians, where Au Bon Pain used to be?

Hong Kong Market Food Court Allston

Stopped by the supermarket today and One of The Kind IS OPEN for business. Apart from the printed menu, there is a board with several daily special items (in Chinese only). I wasn't going to eat there but one of the special was LAMB ON A STICK, so of course I had to get it.

Each stick comes with 6 pieces of 1/2" cube of cumin lamb; you get to choose spicy or not spicey. $1.50 per stick. I asked for spicy and even though I can tolerate decent amt of heat, my lips were burning when I left. :-)

Lunch places in Waltham

We went to Sushi Box over the summer and stuck with the Korean menu. Really meh food.

October 2011 Openings and Closings

I just found out that the mom-and-pop Korean market on Elm Street in Waltham, Dae Han, has closed. I don't exactly know when it closed as I haven't been for a few months. I'm so very sad as the store is very close to where I live and I really like the proprietors.

Does anyone know if there are similar Korean markets nearby (Waltham, Newton, Watertown)? I have zero desire to drive all the way to H Mart.

Where can I find Burrata?

Very excited to see Maplebrook Farm burrata now available at Russo's! 8oz tub (2 balls) sells for $6.98. Can't wait to try them tonight!

Premium quality tofu in Greater Boston?

I too buy the VT soy firm tofu from Russos. They are organic made from non-GMO soybeans (in case anyone cares).
