Buying cidre doux for tonight (preferably in UWS)

Does anyone know of a liquor store in Manhattan (preferably UWS) where I can buy sweet hard cider (cidre doux) for tonight? Thanks.

Armando vs. La Campana

I was somewhat disapppointed by La Campana. While the pasta was very good, the deep fried appetizers we got were greasy, and the desserts were so-so. Also, I was pretty shocked when they started to take my son's main course plate away while I was still eating. One of the things I hate in the U.S. is when waiters take away plates before everyone is finished eating, and this had never happened to me before in Europe. Also, I didn't like the fact that they wanted to put us near the restrooms when there were a number of better located tables, although they did move us when I requested it. Our reservation was for 9:00 pm, and many of the better located tables remained empty while we were there, so there really was no good reason for initially seating us by the restrooms.

Guidance requested re Dinner Hour in Venice

La Bitta (Sat.), Osteria al Cantinon (Sun.), Alla Zucca (Mon.), Trattoria Bar Pontini (Tues.), Osteria - Enoteca Ai Artisti (Wed.)

For all of these, we want to eat outside, if possible. They were selected in part based on non-fish items (because of my non-fish eating son) and, in certain cases, canal-side dining. I know that 2 or 3 of them have seatings, and we plan on definitely going for the 9:00 seatings, as you suggested. We arrive on Fri., but since we will be jet-lagged, we're just going to find a pizza place in the Dorsoduro area and eat on the early side.

Since our last postings crossed each other, I will just repeat what I said above, which was that I was hoping you might also be able to guide me re dinner hours in Bologna for Thurs.-Sat.

Guidance requested re Dinner Hour in Venice

pbsf - thanks so much for replying. This is for 1 week from now. So for weekday meals, if we prefer to arrive when others are closer to the beginning of their meals, what would be a better time? 8:30? 8:00? And is Sunday night any different from other nights? Would Sunday be even earlier? Thank you.

Guidance requested re Dinner Hour in Venice

I was planning on making some restaurant reservations ahead of time for our trip to Venice. Can anyone give me some guidance for the usual dinner hour? I understand that people tend to eat a little earlier in Venice than in Rome or Florence. I usually like to reserve for 9:00 pm, and I notice that there are some places that have seatings for 7:00 and 9:00. For those places that don't have seatings, I assume 9:00 is okay for Friday and Saturday nights, but what about Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday nights? Is 9:00 too late? If we arrive at that hour, will others tend to be in the middle of or finishing up their meals? If so, I would rather eat a little earlier. Thanks for your help.

Best food shops in Bologna

Try this website. It lists food shops by area, although, as a word of warning, a lot of times the site seems to go down.

if you are going to Venice ..don't miss these 2 restuants!!!

You gave the price of the bill as $100 in Jan., 2011. Was this a typo, or did you last eat here 2 years ago? Thanks.

Crispy (but soft on the inside) Pan-Fried Noodles in Manhattan Chinatown (other than NY Noodletown)

Thank you all. Now I'll have to pick between the three recommended, and it won't be easy. I'm already tasting those noodles.

Crispy (but soft on the inside) Pan-Fried Noodles in Manhattan Chinatown (other than NY Noodletown)

I'm coming to NYC over the holidays and intending to have my annual fix of pan-fried noodles (preferably with barbecued pork). I usually go to NY Noodletown to satisfy my craving. However, I intend to eat out for Christmas dinner, and I suspect that NY Noodletown will be very crowded. So does anyone have any other recommendations for restaurants with good pan-fried noodles? I like them when they are crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. Only recs for Manhattan Chinatown please. Thanks for your help.

Cathleenmarie - thanks so much for your report. I enjoyed your descriptions and especially liked the fact that you posted prices. You mentioned you created a personal google map to plot pastry shops, chocolate shops and restaurants. Is there any chance you could post a link to it somewhere or somehow share it? Thanks.

Marthak - does the Paris Pastry book focus mostly on the well known patisseries? Or does it cover some of the "neighborhoody" types of places that might not rank at the top, but still have good quality pastries? Enjoy tomorrow night's dinner!

Best crab dishes/best value in San Francisco and the East Bay?

Whoops, Windy and Dordogne- I'm sorry. That was just a typo on my part. I meant to say $9 for a half crab at Woodhouse, but due to some last minute editing on my part, I ended up including the wrong information without realizing it. And sorry to you dordogne, didn't mean to get you so excited about the amazing bargain at Woodhouse, although $18 for a whole crab still sounds like a great bargain. But the rest of my post still stands. Does anyone have specific price information for crab dishes in San Francisco (for me) and for the East Bay (for dordogne)? Thanks.

Best crab dishes/best value in San Francisco and the East Bay?

If I might steal your thread for a moment, I have been following both those threads mentioned above. Except for the mention of two restaurants in San Francisco with specific crab prices noted (Woodhouse $10 for a whole crab and Buena Vista $15 for a half crab), I believe that all of the other restaurants listed with specific crab prices are outside of San Francisco proper (Berkeley, Oakland, etc). The recommendations re other restaurants in San Francisco with good crab preparations do not indicate prices. For instance, R&G was noted in one of those threads, but no price was mentioned. When you look at the R&G website, it just indicates that crab dishes are at market price. I will be a visitor to your city in December, and I was hoping that there might be restaurants in San Francisco proper serving crab that is under $30 or so for a whole crab for dinner. (I'm not a lunch eater.) Is that feasible? Would it be better for me to start a new thread on this issue? Should I add my question to one of those other threads mentioned?

3X CANNOLI NORTH BEACH REVIEW (from an LA visitor, who *loves* Boston's North End cannoli, but is by no means an expert)

So does anyone have a recommendation for a cafe with a good cannoli in San Francisco (preferably North Beach, Union Square, or close to those areas) where the (1) the filling is excellent AND (2) the cannoli is fresh-filled and not sitting around in a refrigerated case. I'll be visiting San Francisco during Christmas from Chicago. I grew up on cannolis in New York and still go there to get my cannoli fix, but it's not always easy to find fresh-filled cannoli in NY anymore.

Sunday Roast DInner (Not Lunch) Near the Tower of London

Too bad about B.W. Chop House. I checked too, and their website definitely shows that they are not open Sun. nights. I will be there at the end of March, so Feb. 14 won't help. And I hate wasting money on taxis, especially since I will have a 7 day Tube ticket. Since nothing appears to be within walking distance, are there any suggestions for something within a short Tube ride away?

Sunday Roast DInner (Not Lunch) Near the Tower of London

Does anyone have any suggestions for a Sunday roast dinner near the Tower of London? We have tickets for the Ceremony of the Keys, and one has to be there by 9:30. I was hoping to find a place that was within walking distance of the Tower (or if not walking distance, within a fast Tube ride). I've come across a number of places with a Sunday lunch, but not Sunday dinner. I was hoping for something with a set meal in the range of £17 or so, including Yorkshire pudding and the traditional trimmings. Also, I was hoping for a place with traditional desserts - sticky toffee pudding, bread and butter pudding, that sort of thing. I noticed that the Princess of Shoreditch had a £15.50 all day Sunday roast, but it seems to have somewhat mixed reviews. There is Albion, but I don't know if it serves its roast in the evening, and furthermore, it doesn't take reservations - given the fact that we need to get to the Tower of London by 9:30, I would prefer a place that takes reservations. Any suggestions? By way of background, we're visiting London for a week, and we come from Chicago. Thanks in advance for your help.
