Top Paris caves à manger?
In doing a search for wine bars, this place came up: Aux Tonneaux des Halles at 28,rue Montorgueil, 75001. Has anyone been here? If so, would you recommend it? Thanks.

Thanks all. If I miss it my first Sunday, I'll try again the second Sunday I'm there.

Mangeur - I'm getting to Paris mid-afternoon on Sunday. What time does the dancing end? Thanks.

Thanks for your reply, and I really enjoyed your descriptions in your first post. That's why I'm dieting now - so I can eat to my heart's content in Paris!

Marthak - does the Paris Pastry book focus mostly on the well known patisseries? Or does it cover some of the "neighborhoody" types of places that might not rank at the top, but still have good quality pastries? Enjoy tomorrow night's dinner!
Best crab dishes/best value in San Francisco and the East Bay?
Whoops, Windy and Dordogne- I'm sorry. That was just a typo on my part. I meant to say $9 for a half crab at Woodhouse, but due to some last minute editing on my part, I ended up including the wrong information without realizing it. And sorry to you dordogne, didn't mean to get you so excited about the amazing bargain at Woodhouse, although $18 for a whole crab still sounds like a great bargain. But the rest of my post still stands. Does anyone have specific price information for crab dishes in San Francisco (for me) and for the East Bay (for dordogne)? Thanks.
Best crab dishes/best value in San Francisco and the East Bay?
If I might steal your thread for a moment, I have been following both those threads mentioned above. Except for the mention of two restaurants in San Francisco with specific crab prices noted (Woodhouse $10 for a whole crab and Buena Vista $15 for a half crab), I believe that all of the other restaurants listed with specific crab prices are outside of San Francisco proper (Berkeley, Oakland, etc). The recommendations re other restaurants in San Francisco with good crab preparations do not indicate prices. For instance, R&G was noted in one of those threads, but no price was mentioned. When you look at the R&G website, it just indicates that crab dishes are at market price. I will be a visitor to your city in December, and I was hoping that there might be restaurants in San Francisco proper serving crab that is under $30 or so for a whole crab for dinner. (I'm not a lunch eater.) Is that feasible? Would it be better for me to start a new thread on this issue? Should I add my question to one of those other threads mentioned?
3X CANNOLI NORTH BEACH REVIEW (from an LA visitor, who *loves* Boston's North End cannoli, but is by no means an expert)
So does anyone have a recommendation for a cafe with a good cannoli in San Francisco (preferably North Beach, Union Square, or close to those areas) where the (1) the filling is excellent AND (2) the cannoli is fresh-filled and not sitting around in a refrigerated case. I'll be visiting San Francisco during Christmas from Chicago. I grew up on cannolis in New York and still go there to get my cannoli fix, but it's not always easy to find fresh-filled cannoli in NY anymore.
Sunday Roast DInner (Not Lunch) Near the Tower of London
Too bad about B.W. Chop House. I checked too, and their website definitely shows that they are not open Sun. nights. I will be there at the end of March, so Feb. 14 won't help. And I hate wasting money on taxis, especially since I will have a 7 day Tube ticket. Since nothing appears to be within walking distance, are there any suggestions for something within a short Tube ride away?
Sunday Roast DInner (Not Lunch) Near the Tower of London
Does anyone have any suggestions for a Sunday roast dinner near the Tower of London? We have tickets for the Ceremony of the Keys, and one has to be there by 9:30. I was hoping to find a place that was within walking distance of the Tower (or if not walking distance, within a fast Tube ride). I've come across a number of places with a Sunday lunch, but not Sunday dinner. I was hoping for something with a set meal in the range of £17 or so, including Yorkshire pudding and the traditional trimmings. Also, I was hoping for a place with traditional desserts - sticky toffee pudding, bread and butter pudding, that sort of thing. I noticed that the Princess of Shoreditch had a £15.50 all day Sunday roast, but it seems to have somewhat mixed reviews. There is Albion, but I don't know if it serves its roast in the evening, and furthermore, it doesn't take reservations - given the fact that we need to get to the Tower of London by 9:30, I would prefer a place that takes reservations. Any suggestions? By way of background, we're visiting London for a week, and we come from Chicago. Thanks in advance for your help.
Cider in London pubs?
Martin - thanks, I will enjoy my tipple, and sorry to be confusing about the fact that I will only be a visitor to London. Deansa - Borough Market is most definitely on my list, and I will check out the Rake. Hard to imagine that I could find myself liking beer, but maybe I will give it a try.
Cider in London pubs?
Thank you all for your help. I'll only be in London for a week in the early Spring, so I won't get to try the Green Man's outdoor area - (I live in Chicago). All this information was very helpful, as I had not the slightest idea what to look for, but I will see if I can locate all of your suggestions re types of cider/places to go.
Cider in London pubs?
Any suggestions on where to go to get good cider in a London pub? I'm not fond of beer, and I thought cider might be a good alternative . Is draught cider typically better than bottled cider? Do pubs usually have draught cider? If good draught cider is hard to find, do you have any recommendations for good bottled cider? Thanks for your help.
Searching for store to order gift basket or tray of prepared food in or near Lutherville, MD
Thank you all. I ended up ordering from Eddie's of Roland Park.
Searching for store to order gift basket or tray of prepared food in or near Lutherville, MD
Thank you!
Searching for store to order gift basket or tray of prepared food in or near Lutherville, MD
Does anyone have any suggestions for a gourmet/catering/appetizing food store in or near Lutherville, MD? I need to order either a gift basket or tray of prepared food for a family in mourning. I know there's a Whole Foods in Baltimore, but I was hoping someone might know of a non-chain or local store that might have good prepared food.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.
[Milano] Cracco -- December 2008 report
Even though I'm not going to Milan, I loved reading your post - it was humorous, incredibly evocative, and wonderfully descriptive. I don't know what you do in your professional life, but I think you should be a writer/food reviewer!
Bistecca alla Fiorentina-Prices
Okay, thank you all. I won't quibble about a few euros, close my eyes, pay the bill, and try to forget about all of the money I've lost in the stock market this year!
Bistecca alla Fiorentina-Prices
Is it possible to get good bistecca alla Fiorentina in Florence for less than $50 per person (including a glass of wine or two and side dish) for dinner? I've checked out Sostanza and a couple of other places, and they all seem a bit pricy. I was hoping to find something closer to $35 pp, but perhaps that's just not realistic. I'm only interested in places open for dinner. I know Trattoria Mario's is sometimes recommended for bistecca, but it is only open for lunch. Thanks for any suggestions you may have, and if this price range is not realistic, please let me know.
Florence on Sunday
CJT: you said you had Sunday lunch at Il Pallotino. Do you have any idea whether it is open for Sunday dinner?
Seating at Old Ebbitt-katecm or any other knowledgeable person
Thanks for your help.
Seating at Old Ebbitt-katecm or any other knowledgeable person
Recently, I asked whether we should go for moderately priced soft shells and crabcakes at Tabard Inn or Old Ebbitt. We've grown to a party of 8, so we're going to Old Ebbitt, since the Tabard Inn (while perhaps preferable) is now too expensive for a party of that size.
Katecm recommended as follows:
For seating, make reservations for the booths in either the side bar or the back bar. Ebbitt is beautiful, but large and loud in the main room. The side room and back room are going to be quieter. Also, they have extra seating in the office building that they are adjacent to - make sure they don't stick you there, since there is no ambiance.
I've looked at the dining rooms listed on Old Ebbitt's website (http://www.ebbitt.com/main/home.cfm?Section=Photos&Category=About_the_Ebbitt) and am unsure which room is which. Is the Atrium the area that Katecm describes as "extra seating in the office building that they are adjacent to that has no ambience" and that we should avoid? Do I correctly assume that the Corner Bar and Grant's Bar are the side room and back room referred to by katecm? There is also something described as the Cabinet Room in the website, but that may be for private dining. Given the size of our group, we may not have a choice of rooms, but I thought I would at least try to get seating in a quieter area with ambience.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Tabard Inn or Old Ebbitt for dinner? Or M&S?
Thank you all so much for your input. I have definitely crossed M&S off the list. More of you seem to be in favor of the Tabard Inn, so I think we will probably go there. I especially like the idea of the outdoor patio, since after spending a long, cold winter in Chicago, it would be fun to be outside. Thanks again. I know I can always count on Chowhound.
Tabard Inn or Old Ebbitt for dinner? Or M&S?
I will be returning for a visit to DC over Memorial Day Weekend after many years’ absence. Two of us want crabcakes, and one of us wants soft shell crabs, and oysters as an appetizer. Price range: entrees not exceeding $25 or so. Atmosphere – not too noisy (a little noise is okay, but not where you have to shout to be heard), pleasant surroundings (not a bar type atmosphere, but doesn’t have to be fancy), must take reservations, and I don’t want a place where you are squeezed in. I want my 89 year old father to be comfortable. Location – in D.C., not the suburbs. I have read a lot of the reviews on this website, and many of the seafood restaurants recommended have entrees in the $30+ range. Tabard Inn and Old Ebbitt Grill both have crab cakes, soft shell crabs and oysters at an acceptable price level, although the Tabard Inn is a little more expensive than I would have liked.
Is Tabard Inn or Old Ebbitt Grill better, in light of all of these factors? I don’t know anything about McCormick & Schmidt – I know it has seafood, but I don’t know about the atmosphere or whether or not the food is good. Should I consider M&S as well? Thanks for your help.
Best Gelato in Venice, Florence, Rome? Please share
I was in Rome at the beginning of April. The gelato that I dream about was the Nutella-flavored gelato at Old Bridge – via Bastioni di Michelangelo 5- close to the entrance to the Vatican Museums. They served up an enormous portion of it, and it was wonderfully creamy and highly flavored. In fact, my 14 year old son and I still talk about it, and he asked me for some Nutella yesterday in the hopes of re-creating the flavor. Enjoy!
Rome restaurants: our "thinking about trying list", comments?
I think it was a bad night at Renato e Luisa. We were in Rome for a week at the beginning of April, and ate at Renato e Luisa twice for dinner. The food was delicious. We had an extremely nice waitress, who spent lots of time with us explaining our choices. We only spoke a few words of Italian, and she spoke a little bit of English, but we managed to communicate. The only wine ordered was 1 glass (or was it a quarter litre) of the house wine, since my husband is a non-drinker, and we were accompanied by my 13-year old son. The atmosphere was very warm and friendly. In fact, at some point, the chef burst into song, and everyone started laughing. Everyone there was Italian (except for a couple of Norwegians). We had such a good time that we went back there for our last dinner in Rome. I highly recommend the place.
Anyone familiar with the Ristorante Tipico-Cucina Romana label?
Thanks. Your point about the level of self-awareness of mom and pops is a good one.
