Birthday Luncheon in Taormina
Thanks! Price is no object since it is costing everyone a fortune to make the trip what's another lunch thrown into the mix. Appreciate the response and will look into Maffei's.
Birthday Luncheon in Taormina
We will be in Catania, Sicily in October with 6 friends, and it will be my husband's 55th birthday. Would like to bring the group up to Taormina for a day trip with a fantastic birthday luncheon, overlooking the water of course! Anyone have specific recommendations?
Anyone Been to Le Hangar?
I was there again in November 2010 for two meals - it is certainly a good choice in the neighborhood - food fresh, nice vibe, not too much english spoken by the clientele and very reasonably priced. Can still recommend it.
Where to eat before seeing Wicked?
We like Thalia - less than half a block from the theater and has lost of choice, including a good burger.
Dim Sum Go Go Was Closed Today 4.11. 2010
We have been told that they lost their lease and would be moving, or going out of business, by year's end. We went a couple of weeks ago and found the gate down and the restaurant closed. I called a couple of days later and actually got someone live who said they were renovating and would be open in a week or two That was April 2. I fear that Dim Sum Go Go is history which would be a terrible loss. We love the place.

Thanks very much! I appreciate the recommendations and look forward to seeing your home town.

I am going to be there for a few days in early March---anyone have recommendation for restaurants? Thanks!
What is the best Indian restaurant in NYC
I was always a big fan of Tabla - thought the flavors were very subtle and sophisticated - unfortunately, went there last night, the menu has changed to much more traditional Indian, and it was not nearly as good as any number of restaurants on 6th Street, or Earthen Oven, and triple the price. Danny Meyer should consider cutting them loose.
New Take - In Japanese to replace Yuki Sushi on UWS?
We were regular users of take in from Yuki Sushi on 92nd and Amsterdam, and now are without Japanese delivery. Any ideas on place that will deliver up to 106th Street and is fresh and reliable would be appreciated. PS--anyone know what happened to Yuki Sushi? Always seemed busy.
Belfast
I will be in Belfast all of next week and am looking for recommendations for both lunch and dinner. Not too fussy -- will have some teenagers with us. Staying at Hilton Belfast - walking distance a plus. Many thanks!
Oppenheimer Butcher Out of Business
I got back from August at the beach and notice that Oppenheimer's on 99th Street is out of business. Now there is no butcher on the Upper West Side. Any idea about why they closed - their service was not great in the last few years so I am not that surprised on that front - but they were the last hold out in the neighborhood.
Budget Wedding Reception--Manhattan
Etcetera etcetera in the theattre district has good space upstairs that would accomodate. I have done private events there in the past, very very reasonable, service is good, food good (fantastic is alot to ask for with budget range), near two subway lines!!
chef table or wine cellar suggestion for 10 people
Picholine has a wine room....lovely!
Eating Barcelona
We will be there in early July but only for 2 dinners - we had one of our favorite meals ever at Cal Pep two years ago - combination of terrifically fresh food and fun atmosphere with friends made it great. We probably will go back for one dinner. Do you recommend a do not miss from your list above?
looking for best whitefish salad in the city - is it Murrays?
agree on Barney Greengrass---all their whitefish is fantastic.
Gotham Bar & Grill Still Excellent
I have eaten at Gotham many, many times over the years, but hadn't been there in the last 3 or 4 years. I took two friends there for lunch yesterday and it is still excellent. The $31.00 prix fixe lunch was a good value - delicious with appropriate lunch size portions. The service was flawless. The room continues to be one of my favorites - florals are great, it is light and bright and somehow, noise is controlled, in spite of the soaring ceilings. Highly recommended for a VERY civilized mid day meal.
Best Private Dining Rooms in Manhattan?
Small dining room at Grammery Tavern - holds up to 16. Toqueville has two beautiful rooms. Le Bernardin has very flexible space on the 2nd floor with a private entrance. The private dining room at per se is elegant but has no view. All food fab!
China de Puebla - Terrific New Restaurant UUWS
Sorry to hear that. We were hoping for something good to last up there, sounds like it is not to be.
Best NON-cart dim sum?
Dim Sum Go Go on Chatham Square. There are never carts there, the roast pork buns are fab, as are several of the dumplings - we always order at least 3 orders of the shrimp and scallion variety. It is great.
Restaurants everyone loves--except you
Totally agree - been there twice and it feels like you are eating medicore food on the lap of people you don't know. Also UWS busy, but why - Cafe Du Soleil on 104th Street - eaten there 3 times and the food is tasteless, tables also too close together and the service seems to be by people who are not waiters but just wandered off the street and were given jobs.
Anyone tried the private dining room at Le Bernardin?
There is a private room that holds 62 comfortably, 70 a little less comfortably. It is located behind the main entrance. Has no windows, so you don't get the lovely view, but it is available.
Special Place for Mom's 50th birthday
Sorry - yes, I have investigated doing a private event there and it was estimated to be upwards of $280 per person. You may want to look at the private rooms at Grammercy Tavern and Tocqueville which are bot wonderful, but again, may be over your budget.
Group of 10, semi private dining?
I agree that it is a perfect place but think it would be a real stretch to spend only $150 with wine, tax and gratuity.
Anyone tried the private dining room at Le Bernardin?
I have planned several private dinners at Le Bernardin as well as holding one for 62 people at per se. Both were handled perfectly. At Le Bernardin, they do indeed have space that can be configured for different sized groups -although I think that with only 6 people the cost might be prohibitive - also, why do a private space with such a small group? There is a separate entrance for the private dining room, and it is very plain, so you would want to supplement the space with florals and possibly specialty linens as well. I don't know the smaller private space at per se, the larger room is very neutral and has no windows and definitely needed linens and florals to make it special. The food was great - 4 or 5 course set menu. Would recommend both.
Chinese Restaurant with Good Vegetarian Options
Phoenix Garden - 40th Street off 2nd....fab chinese food, odd location, often overlooked.
Looking for a suggestion for lunch
The restaurant section of Mangia is very nice - they have both a salad bar (it is plentiful but small as compared to the downstairs choices) and a nice menu, with salads and small pizzas.
Special night out recommendations?
I absolutely love Gotham but don't think that it is romantic at all in the traditional sense. We did a recent birthday at Fleur du Sel which was just lovely.
Next Iron Chef- Episode 5- Inspire.....
I've eaten at his restaurant and his food is the real deal!
110th to 116th B'Way eats!
Thai Market is on 108th and Broadway and it is very good, although so noisy at night that we only eat in during lunch (good special for $7) and call in for dinner. Picnic is still good, and Henry's, which I hadn't eaten at in years because it was so mediocre (and I live on the block!), I recently tried again and had a decent meal - trick is to order very simple preparation. Re: post below, I hate Cafe du Soleil, food is tasteless, service bad and tables so close together you might as well be sitting in your neighbor's lap.
