Dinner After Cubs Game in Mesa
We're going to a Cubs spring training game this Thursday in Mesa. Afterward, we need to drive to Tucson. Looking for a good (but casual...we'll be dressed for a ballgame) place near Mesa as we head south out of town. In other words, we don't want to drive north to Scottsdale, etc. Thanks for your ideas.
Salty Xoco
Two of us went for lunch last week at Rick Bayless' much-heralded Xoco. We had two tortas...a chicken and the house special carnitas. Both were WAY over salted. It was hard to tell exactly what caused the saltiness. I'm not sure it was the meat...perhaps the bean spread? I like salt and am used to the fact that midwest food is generally liberally salted, but this was noticeably over the top. Maybe just an off day?

Christmas Dinner Near Clearwater
Looking for suggestions for an upscale Christmas day dinner near Clearwater. Last year, we went to the restaurant in the Don Cesar...it was excellent, but we'd like something a bit further north this year.
Prefer sit-down service (as opposed to a buffet) but will consider any good ideas. Thanks for your help.

Breakfast or lunch: Cheeky's, Sherman's Deli, Manhattan in the Desert, Pinnochio's.
Dinner: Jake's (new and very good, priced right, too), Le Vallauris (best special dine out place, for my money...French-accented but not stuffy, outdoor seating under huge trees). If you're into calves' liver, Shame on the Moon (Rancho MIrage) serves some 50 plates of it a night.
Just for fun: Shanghai Red's...sit at the bar and watch the action.

Report - Maui and Oahu
We have gone to the Roy's on Lewers several times. What we do is to sit at the outside bar and have a cocktail and order food as well...usually an appetizer or something light. It's a good place to watch the passing parade and it's more casual than sitting inside. Very enjoyable. There's a sampler plate with 3 different fish entrees that I particularly enjoy.
Nobu is just a few steps away and is fun if you've never been there. Great small plates, not cheap. Also close by is BLT in the new Trump building...haven't been there yet but will try it on our next trip.
Where to eat in Huntington/Newport beach
There are so many answers to a quex like this, you're probably better off doing some searches on this board.
That said, two quite different seafood places a block apart in Newport Beach (near the Newport pier) are 21 Oceanfront and the Crab Cooker. If you don't like the looks of one, walk over to the other!
ISO Friday Night Fish Fry
I'm real glad I'm not back in Chicago right now (brrr!), but every Friday night, I find myself yearning for a good old midwestern style fish fry. You know, the ones that every corner tavern and rural roadhouse seem to have...perch, cod, whatever, there are many variations.
Any place in So Cal that offers anything like this? I'm based in OC but would drive a ways to find a good Friday fry. Thanks.

Actually, I prefer the pork over the beef at Phillipe's. You'll notice that the pork sandwich is listed above the beef sandwich on their menu boards, FWIW.
Great breakfast in Orange County?
I know it's too late for the OP, but be aware that Ramos House serves ONLY a $35 brunch on the weekends. My wife and I went down there on a Saturday recently, looking for a light lunch (I was hungry for some of their delicious mac n cheese). We were seated and handed a menu with one price. Since we didn't want a $70 lunch that day, we went elsewhere. We'll go back during the week sometime.
New Burger Place in Boise
Years ago (in the 70's and 80's), I used to get to Boise fairly often. There was a little place on the west side of town (I think) that was called the Dutch Oven (or at least the "Dutch" something). When you walked in the door, they threw a burger on the grill for you...that's all they had. And they liked to cook it well done, even if you asked for it rare. When they ran out of burgers, they closed for the day, often by 2 p.m. A place with real character, if not great food.
I assume it's long gone...anyone else have memories fo this place?
Dinner at the Bar
I have a couple of nights to spend by myself in San Francisco this month. I'd like to find a nice restaurant that serves meals at the bar (not a bar that serves meals, but a restaurant with food service at their bar). I like this setting when I'm by myself...it's usually easy to strike up a conversation with the bartender and fellow bar-sitters. Any cuisine and price OK.Your ideas? Thanks.

Try Kakaako Kitchen for loco moco...only served until 10 a.m., I believe. But at any time of day, they serve up some great local favorites in a very casual atmosphere.
Cheap and good in Palm Springs?
For a dive, try Shanghai Red's, hidden behind the Fisherman's Market on Indian Canyon. Try the lamb chop appetizer and/or the fish tacos.
El Gallito in Cathedral City is a decent little Mexican place.
Pomme Frite, on Palm Canyon downtown, has some fine mussels and good people-watching at reasonable prices

Try Sherman's Deli downtown Palm Springs. Lots of good things in the case.
Sweetbreads! I need sweetbreads!
Every year when we're in Palm Springs, I get the sweetbreads at Le Vallauris in downtown PS. Great romantic place with good food.

I too hope that the good places find a way to weather this economic storm. But those that don't deserve to survive won't. My jaw still drops at places that can't understand the importance of top-notch customer service...there's no room for error right now.

Try the old west saloon, the Chute-Out Steakhouse. The setting and the food reflect the area just fine...don't expect too much, just go with it.

Get some of the "Indian candy" to munch on. (It's salmon, not candy.) Their smoked mussels are a personal favorite as well.

Bohemian Crystal in Westmont has big plates of Eastern European comfort food at very reasonable prices. Pork, duck, dumplings, gravy, yum.
Phoenix Light Rail Dining
I'll be in the Phoenix area next month to take in some spring training games. Besides baseball, I also like trains, so am anxious to try the new light rail system. I plan to ride it from one end to the other and back.
Besides baseball and trains, I also enjoy good food. What do you recommend that is within walking distance of a light rail station? I'll be by myself, so a restaurant with bar seating or a sushi place would be perfect. Your ideas are appreciated. Thanks.
Restaurant Books: Behind the Scenes
As a frequent diner at restaurants that range from holes-in-the-wall to holes-in-the-wallet, I admit to being quite ignorant of what goes on behind the scenes. Just what happens between my placing an order and my order being placed in front of me?
I would love to read a book---or books---that deals with restaurant operations. I don't want a textbook or a how-to for restaurateurs, but something more lively that captures the everyday trials and tribulations of a working kitchen. Something that provides some insights into the coordination, staffing, and workflow that most of us never see.

Try Ted Peter's on Pasadena in S. St. Pete. They smoke their own fish and serve it up in a rustic outdoors-on-the-front-porch setting. Good burger, too, last time I was there. (Closed Tuesday.) I'm heading to FL for Christmas and will be stopping by there myself next week.

Wow. In this climate of tough sledding for many restaurants, it's hard to believe that EVERY restaurant owner hasn't had a staff meeting to emphasize the need for top notch customer relations and service.
Sabatino's in the Lido Shipyard
Their sausage is stuffed with cheese, which gives it a distinct and not unpleasant flavor. But sometimes I'd just like to have a plain old unstuffed Italian sausage.
