Vegetarian sub for duck in smoked duck lasagna? No soy/fake meat.
i detect a lot of "if"'s in that reply. agreeing with escondido123 above, my point was its an entirely different recipe.
i understand your point but this is not substituting cayenne for black pepper because you want more heat, this is taking the signature taste in the dish (and a very distinctive one at that) and removing it. of course the OP can do whatever he wants, but dont take the pork and eggs out and expect it to taste like cabonara.
Authentic Asian Noodle Soup West of Boston?
"noodles in house spicy beef soup" oh man! cant believe you brought up this Red Pepper soup.
it might be the best cold weather soup around. i like their food in general but get this every time i go.
Vegetarian sub for duck in smoked duck lasagna? No soy/fake meat.
there is no substitute for smoked duck. another recipe.
Banh Mi Ngon opening in West Roxbury next week
bahn mi, decent barbeque and burritos in the same block?
i think i just put on five pounds.
Home Made Instead of Purchased
can i give a shout out and thank you to antilope's immersion blender mayo recipe (which i have posted in another thread, hope this is ok)
never buy mayo again.
Best Recipes you have ever found on Chowhound Home Cooking board
antilopes immersion blender homemade mayo recipe was a revelation to me.
could never get it to thicken up correctly in the blender and then cleaning the whole thing so onerous i never did it, and then...
have not bought mayo in ages.
Homemade Best Foods/Hellmans Mayonnaise using stick blender
1 whole egg, medium or large size
1 Tablespoon lemon juice (bottled ok
)1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
1 teaspoon dry mustard (or 1/4 tsp prepared yellow mustard)
1/4 teaspoon table salt
dash white pepper
1 cup vegetable (canola) oil, room temperature
Break egg into bottom of 1-quart canning jar or other tall narrow jar that allows you to immerse the mixing blades of a stick blender all the way to the bottom. The jar should be only slightly wider than the end of the stick blender.
Add lemon juice, vinegar, mustard, table salt and white pepper.
Add 1 cup of vegetable oil.
Place mixing blades of stick blender (turned off) all the way to the bottom of the jar, pressing
down over the egg.
Turn stick blender on high speed, hold in place at bottom of jar for about 5-seconds until you see mayonnaise form under stick blender's mixing blades.
Slowly pull stick blender upward until the mixing blades reaches top of jar, taking about
more 5-seconds. The stick blender will turn the oil into mayonnaise as it is pulled slowly to the
top of the jar.
After chilling in the fridge, this mayonnaise gets slightly thicker and tastes very much like Best Foods/Hellman's Mayonnaise.
Makes about 1 cup of mayonnaise.
But you'll love it the way I cook it!
@ nonniemuss:
wow! i am with you all the way, leave 'em all in the ocean.
here in new england this is tantamount to treason. in fact, when i first read the thread title i instantly thought of the multitude of friends who insisted that i would be swayed by their rendition of... bluefish in a mustard sauce/roasted cod on fresh tomatoes/ smelts/catfish/snapper and on and on....
never converted, in fact, i think all those cod/scrod/halibut/sole/sable/whatever, white type fish are just carved from a single giant fish and called different names
Crabs In New York City?
the phrase "where can i get crabs in new york city?" seems to open up a world of possibilties....
But you'll love it the way I cook it!
jeez, just a little humor. the site is so EARNEST all the time.
that said, roasting any of the root vegetables (celery root, parsnips, carrots, shallots, rutabaga) at fairly high heat after tossing them with vermouth and butter, s&p, completely changes their nature and you can even sell them to kids.
But you'll love it the way I cook it!
take several large zucchini ( preferably given to one for free from friends overplanted garden), shred them on the large holes of a grater, salt them, put them in a colander and let them drain, press the water out with your hands, pour them directly on an open sports section of the sunday Times, wrap them carefully and place them directly in the compost heap as that is all they are good for.
then order pizza from your favorite place and consume immediately with beer.
ICOB (Island Creek Oyster Bar), I know you've heard it all before
just come here more often. big board favorite. personally find it above my means but probably correct for their location.
more reasonable than neptune oyster without the attitude. win.
Redbones Food Truck
honestly i have not been to redbones in years after finding Bt's smokehouse in sturbridge, soulfire in allston, blackstrap in winthrop, red eyed pig in west rox, and blue ribbon (BEFORE they stopped smoking at the west newton branch).
havent seen the need.
Crazy chili
while i have heard their are people who dont finish their beer, i have never actually seen it!
Chow-worthy in Nonantum?
the max and leos for pizza then buffs for wings and beers is a great newton corner crawl, but yes, they are not in "the lake".
Chow-worthy in Nonantum?
ginger root (gingerrootnewton.com) is competent but unexciting american chinese. depasquales MARKET (on rt.16) already mentioned, but Depasquales GROCERY (241 adams st), closer to trinity, has great sandwiches, looks..um..unassuming.
D&A pizza across from Giuseppes, has a pretty good rep, but i have never warmed to the place. Maria is the best pizza in the nabe but she still cooks too cool.
johnnys smokehouse is incorrectly named as i have never had anything from here that tasted remotely of smoke.avoid.
the wonderful magni bakery, just behind Ginger Root) is, alas, closed.
get your knives sharpened at stoddards across from the true value.
Maria y Ricardo's New Corn Tortillas
how do they make money? supplying to restaurants?
A main course using fresh dill--other than salmon.

every single time i eat at el Amigo, i say to myself (or my daughter),
"why am i not eating here more?"
Road Trip up East Coast
throw in NY system weiners and a dels frozen lemonade in R.I. and thats a pretty good trip.
and hopefully a side of baked beans somewhere in that mess.
What foods live up to their reputation? What do you 'rave' about?
Pearl Kountry Klub beef frankfurters.
Fried Mortadella Sandwich [moved from General Topics]
usually when i bbq,
(whole bone in butt, smoke@225 to internal 175, on rack into roasting pan beer/cider in pan into 250 degree oven, pull out @195, whole butt into paper bag, seal, 1-2 hours)
i also throw a 2-3 lb block (ask for it in one piece) of dietz & watson baloney or an entire stick of top end baloney into the smoker for a few hours. soaks up smoke like a sponge. slice it up, serve it on cheap white bread with cole slaw and hot sauce.
heaven.
Lunch places in Waltham
that same daughter delivered the graduation speech in '06. my younger went to newton north, the horror!
BOSTON'S WATERFRONT
now, now, you kids dont stop i will pull this car right over and we will go home! but seriously it is REALLY unfortunate that the rents are so brutal as to not warrant an interesting try by anyone. competent but, zzzzzzzzzzzzz. oh well not my demographic anyway, as the only times i am out that way the entire populous is CLEARLY not from the bay state. people seem happy, the money is flowing into boston, i will be at strip-t's if anybody needs me....
Cheeseburger All the Way - give me your best!
"shredded tomaine" is an unfortunate typo in a thread about ground beef.
Your Perfect Sandwich
split a decent 10' presano or country loaf in half width-wise and pull out some of the inside leaving a 1" shell. spead a cup of home-made olive salad on one of the halves, and then layer with, roasted red peppers, hard boiled eggs, greens, chopped scallions, cucumber and sliced tomatoes. put top on, wrap whole sandwich in plastic wrap, then tinfoil, put a plate on top and weight with several pounds of anything and leave for a couple of hours. unwrap and cut into 6 wedges, right through the plastic to keep together. bask in the glory of freinds who will love this sandwich.
actually while hitchhiking near kitsatchie national forest in the late 70's, i happened across a dumpy shack on the bank of a river. inside the owner made me a fully dressed fried chicken skin po' boy. i ate outside at a picnic table in the shade with a couple of cold dixie beers.
deep fried chicken skin, remoulade, lettuce, bread, beer, louisiana heat, no internet or chattering phones or even televisions. quite simply of the best things i have ever eaten.
almost 40 years ago and i still think about it.
Lunch places in Waltham
hope your close friend enjoyed his(her) time at brookline high. my daughter ended up in a 45 minute "did you know...?" conversation with him about BHS. oh well, comped tiramisu!
