Aux Deux Oliviers - small couscous BYOW on Rachel E.

They do not have a licence (BYOB or regular) so I assumed one cannot just bring in a bottle. The mantana resto is a BYOB.

Aux Deux Oliviers - small couscous BYOW on Rachel E.

I went tonight for dinner at Aux Deux Oliviers and I am pleased to echo the review by Beauchemin. The resto has a take out counter at the entrance but there are four tables, seating a total of 12 patrons on a mezzanine. Nothing fancy but clean and airy with cloth covered tables. My SO and I started with a cracked wheat soup - beef broth, nicely flavoured with (I think) cumin. We followed this with their couscous Royal comprising root veggies in a broth on the side and a "tagine" plate served separately with the meat. There were two nicely spiced merguez sausages, a whole roasted chicken leg and a to-die-for medium sized lamb shank on a great mound of mildly flavoured couscous. One spoons the broth over the other plate along with the veggies. We both had enough left over for lunch doggie bags! At a price of $35 for two (tax In, tip out) this place is a steal. The one drawback is they do not have a licence so no alcoholic beverages to accompany the excellent food. The personable young waitress kept our water glassed topped up.

One may order couscous plates with various combinations of fish, chicken, sausage, lamb or chicken for $12-16.

The owner/cook previously ran the resto of the same name on de Mentana, but he decided to operate a less stressful establishment, sold up and opened 3 months ago at the Rachel location.

Highly recommended.

Salt Packed Anchovies

SUCCESS!!! at Tranzo. I got about a dozen of the little suckers for $4.50. Was told they always have these anchovies in stock.

Thanks for all the suggestions and a special thanks to mtlalex.

Salt Packed Anchovies

Does anyone know where I can buy salt cured-packed anchovies? I have seen them at Italian grocers in the past - packed in a large tin and one could buy them individually as required. I tried last month at Milano's and was told that the Federal Gov't has (in its usual infinite wisdom) banned import of this product and it is no longer available. Can anyone confirm this - if so, are they available under the table anywhere?

A staple of great Italian sauces, the ubiquitous oil packed anchovies just don't cut it.

West Island Farmer's Market

I too am an avowed afficianado of JTM (all the way from Beaconsfield). There is a small farmer's market in Ste. Anne de Bellevue every Sat. AM in the summer - it's right on the boardwalk. Expensive but I suppose if you figure in the price of gas to JTM....

Old Montreal Resto On St. Paul

Thanks for all your help. It was indeed the Rose Blanche. I guess we might have been some of their last customers - the place was not busy when we went. Too bad - another casualty of Montreal's cut-throat resto scene. Again, many thanks for the updating

Old Montreal Resto On St. Paul

Thanks for the ideas. My SO says I am wrong in my directions. The place is a few blocks east of McGill, west of St. Laurent on St. Paul. She says it is the name of a flower (in French).

Old Montreal Resto On St. Paul

A couple of years ago I had an excellent dining experience at a resto on St. Paul in Old Montreal. It is a french bistro-type resto – about three or four blocks east of St Laurent. It is on the north side and is an unassuming place run by (I think) a husband and wife. The front of the resto is large windows overlooking the street; they only have about 8 tables. I had their bouillabaisse and it was to die for. I don’t think it was a BYOB, but not sure. Does anyone know what is the name of this place??

Chickpea Flour

Milano at 6862 St. Laurent carries chickpea flour. Find it on the nuts display near the centre charcuterie counter - curiously, they do not have it with the specialty flours.

CASA NAPOLI

I shall be dining shortly with a group of 6 at Casa Napoli on St. Laurent, just south of Dante. I searched this board for feedback on this resto but found nothing. Does anyone have any info on what I can expect?? Thanks.

Baking supplies

I know its a mite far from your downtown specification, but if you buy in bulk you won't have to make the trip often. Papillon is the place, located in Pointe Claire Plaza (corner Blvd. St. Jean & Hwy 20). They have a range of bread flours - unbleached white, coarse and fine whole wheat, rye, dark rye, etc. as well a "trendy" kamut, coarse multigrains. Non-diastatic malt powder and other adjuvents are available. The Swiss Vienna Deli across the corridor will sell you fresh brewers yeast (I freeze the 500 g brick in separate 100 g blocks and shave off what I need each time I make bread).

Rolling the dice at Bangkok

I have visited Vietnam (2 separate trips) for a total of over 5 weeks in 2005 and 2008. In my experience the Vietnamese restos in Montreal faithfully reflect the high quality of meals served in that wonderful country. The pho soups here are generally at least as good as those available in Vietnam. My favourite spots for pho are Nguyen Phi (6260, chemin de la cote-des-Neiges, (514-344-1863) and Pho Bac 1016 Boul Saint-Laurent (514.393.8116). For non-pho dining Nhu Y, a BYOB at 134 Jean-Talon West ( 514-948-8884) is my fav.

Shahi Palace report

Based on Chowhound recs. my family of three went to Shahi Palace last night. 100% satisfaction - once again this board proves a valualbe tool in resto selection. We had the chicken balti, mutton palek, palek paneer and haleem; all served with includede naan. Spicing was "medium" (Canadian scale) and "mild" (Pakistan-India scale). Nothing to add to existing reviews except to heartily second them.

Upscale Shoyu Sauce

Does anybody know where I can by high quality authenic imported Japanese shoyu? When I was in Japan. I purhased shoyu at aout $25/500mL and it was outstanding. I believe the relatively high cost was because of the long aging. Kikkoman available here just does not cut it! Miyamoto Foods on Victoria Ave. could not help.

Looking for fresh cheese in Montreal (curds or other)

You just cannot beat cheese curds from the St. Albert cheese factory in St. Albert, ON - about half way between Montreal and Ottawa, 8 km off the 417. You might try:

Chez Chartier
655 chemin Bord-du-Lac Lakeshore
Dorval, QC H9S 2B7
(514) 631-5011
They used to carry St Albert, but of course it has been refrigerated.

The second best is curds from Hamel at JTM - they have not been refrigerated, but they are not from St. Albert.

Good luck.

Pigs Knuckles

You might want to try:

Le Petit Munich
4888, boulevard Saint-Jean, Pierrefonds, QC H9H 4B2
Telephone : 514-626-8899

I very much enjoyed their "schweinhaxe" - boiled and then roasted - to die for!

Where to find yeast?

I have used fresh brewer's yeast for years to make bread and buy it in 500g ($5.00)blocks from Swiss Vienna Deli and Pastries in Pointe Claire. I divide the block in to 100g pieces, wrap in plastic wrap and freezer paper then freeze. This way I can keep the yeast without problem for a year. If I don't use a whole 100g piece, I cut off what I need and simply return the unused portion to the freezer. I disperse the frozen yeast in 50 mL water before adding to my dough mix.

Freezer Paper

I am looking for a supplier of a freezer wrap I have used for years. It is a dusky pink paper with a polyethylene coating on one side. I have bought it in the past through my butcher store but this is no longer possible. It comes in a commercial roll, about 8-10 inches in diameter and about 18 inches width. My butcher said I should try "S&P Sales" on rue Papineau but I can find no such store through Google or Canada 411. Does anyone know this outlet or know where I might get this paper in the greater Montreal region?
