awesome. thanks! that's right around the corner from my office!
Are There Any Bars With Wi-Fi?
My bf and I are planning on having some productive (or so we hope) work dates. Was wondering if there are any spots where you can get a beer or glass of wine and comfortably sit with your laptop? Thanks for your help!
Alternative to Locande Verde
l'artusi closest bet. then dell'anima (though slightly smaller).
dinner/drinks spots convenient for date taking path back to hoboken
thanks all, for your suggestions!!! malatesta is one of my faves and didn't realize it was convenient for someone heading back to 'boken. will start there and check out a few of the other recs in the 'hood.
dinner/drinks spots convenient for date taking path back to hoboken
hey guys,
planning a date tonight with a guy who lives in hoboken and figured i'd take into consideration the fact that he'll be heading home after our night (it's a first date so he'll definitely be heading home;)
nothing fancy. looking for fun, reasonable, good food and most of all great drinks.
thoughts?
thanks ahead of time,
-@monasapple
Park & 50s-60s
not going to be of too much help here, but when i see park avenue i think of park avenue summer. http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/park-avenue-cafe/ and its right in the area on 63rd i believe!
Bar Tour - Mid Town
as far as midtown goes, i'd definitely second the oak bar. incredible cocktails. or try king cole at the st. regis. though i'd say its hay day is over, the hudson hotel makes for some great people watching and they have a couple of bars to choose from. a little higher up (76th) is bemelman's bar at the carlyle hotel. just went before a met party last night and it's tres cool. if you want fun, old school (little more casual) new york try billy's gay nineties is another tried and true establishment.
if you can make a brief detour to soho on the e.village day, i would add tailor to the list.
have fun and oh, ... can i be a +1? :) make sure you ask for a st. germain cocktail. my friend created it.
vegetarian/raw/vegan - midtown to Canal st.
definitely go to PF&W. just wrote it up as my top 10 favorite outdoor seating spots in the summer.
Solo Hound in Manhattan
turks and frogs (any location) has a nice bar, perfect for drinking wine and eating their turkish delights.
taste on ues has a great wine list/cheese tray. i always go here and sit at the bar.
kefi - GREAT greek on uws. another place i go to and only sit at the bar.
riposo 72 is sleepy wine bar on uws. super friendly bartenders and i always see peeps reading at the bar, enjoying their pizzas and wine.
babbo has a great bar and people always eat at it.
bar boulud, resto, grape and grain, les enfants terribles are a few others.
i would go to any of these solo in a heartbeat.
Shake Shack Fries Suck Horribly
amen! i feel the same way about in 'n out's fries. at least their's in theory sound like they'd be great- handmade/hand-fried etc. but shake shack's? god awful. and i'm sorry, if i can't get a good fry with my burger, chances of me going back are slim to none.
UWS BEST ITALIAN?
If you're willing to travel a little higher than the 90s hit up Campo between 112 and 113 or spiga (in 80s i think - cash only). Gennaro used to be my favorite until I revisited it a few weeks ago and was extremely disappointed by the service and the food. People can dog Carmine's, and while sure, it's big and chainy, I've never been disappointed with a meal here. max soha is also cute - up by columbia. to be honest, you're really not going to get that great of an italian meal on the upper west... you're better off going down to the village to some of my favorites like malatesta or gradisca.
Anniversary dinner July 4th weekend
i'm always nervous to recommend restaurants for anniversaries. i don't want to ruin anybody's night. but here are a few ones you can look up. restos will be open, and saturday is usually a crazy night to get in places, but you may luck out because most NYers will be out of town. the earlier you call, though the better.
high end: jean georges and le bernardin. if you like old school italian i'd say il mulino as well. if you like sushi, you can't go wrong with nobu, megu or morimoto.
middle of the road: babbo, allen and delancey (super romantic), eleven madison park.
sort of a ny romance cliche but lots of out-of-towners love one if by land, two if by sea.
hope this gives you some guidance. feel free to email me at my web site if you have any more questions.
Restaurants everyone loves--except you
wow. at some point i will have to read through this entire thread. what a great discussion! i glanced over and saw one i agreed with - celeste - posted by brian W. amen! my other one? corner bistro. never had a drier, less appetizing burger in my life... sorry guys!
Minetta Tavern Alternative?
though i hate to see it, if you're looking for somewhere just as equally scene-y it would be the waverly inn, though probably just as hard to get in. if you're looking for GREAT food, try freemans. if that doesn't work, mcnally's pastis, balthazar and schiller's are as equally great. you could also go for bobo, public or the spotted pig.
Cesca or Telepan? Birthday Dinner for Mom Friday Night.
i'm with mahler5. telepan HANDS DOWN. don't even think twice about it. i am posting my review tomorrow, but here's a direct quote from my draft: Telepan is the perfect place to take parents or grandparents, or to celebrate any occasion: birthday, anniversary, graduation or romance.
Quatorze Bis?
quatorze bis is great, but i wouldn't call it "casual." i went with my uncle and he's pretty hoity toity (sp?). http://monasapple.blogspot.com/2005/10/quatorze-bis.html
if you want french on ues that's casual i highly recommend orsay. it's great.
http://monasapple.blogspot.com/2006/07/orsay.html
there's also le bilboquet but it's somewhat more on the elderly /serious crowd like quatorze bis.
Need a bar downtown for large group (30-60) that might do drink specials
hi mnguyen,
i'm not sure about the deals, but i would say phebe's would be the best/easiest place to rally a big crew. it's a great spot for holiday parties, birthdays, etc. the owners are really cool too so it's worth giving them a call.
the back room might be fun with a large group - though normally packed i would definitely call ahead of time.
also worth a shot is the magician - and their drinks are the best deal in town - no large group necessary.
if you need more details you can click here:

good luck. email me if you have any more questions.
Bachelor Party Dinner
FREEMANS! trust me. just go. if not, le pere pinard, essex, supper. if you're not limited to LES dylan prime in tribeca is a great place for a dude's bachelor party. or any of the BLT spots.
Has anyone ever eaten at the bar at Babbo?
yes and it's totally awesome. the breadsticks are to die for! i'm a new fan of eating at bars, anyway. the service is impeccable at B and it's just as good at the bar. not to mention they'll let you sample all the wines before you commit to one.
reasonable b-day dinner near Black and White Bar
thanks D...DF and Lucia. i appreciate it!! and D...DF - i was thinking ssam but was worried it'd be too pricy and i went to otto last year for my bday so...great minds think alike!
reasonable b-day dinner near Black and White Bar
was thinking The Smith...
anybody been that can recommend it? or have other suggestions?
thanks!
NYC Restaurant Advice...
wow - that's a lot of stuff but i'll try to give you a few pointers.
chinese- wo hop in chinatown. dirty hole in wall but great stuff.
italian - frank in Evill, malatesta in w.vill, more upscale babbo, otto, baldoria
steak - freemans, not your typical steakhouse but best reasonable filet in town
seafood- mermaid inn, jack's oyster bar
gyro, shawarma, falafel - jerusalem on uws
pub with happy hour - mcsorleys-oldest pub in nyc, pianos, the magician (not your typical irish pubs but great drink deals in lower east side), phebe's, swift, spring lounge
inn at irving place is the best tea house, i'd say, or try Tsalon
coffee and desserts - serendipity, alice's tea cup
Happy Hour on Sunday
try supper and pianos. both great places to drink and eat on a sunday.
and though not a happy hour, check out the frying pan - the boat/bar/restaurant just north of chelsea piers.
Romantic Birthday dinner with fiance
If $$$ is not an issue I would say Jean-Georges, Le Bernardin or Per Se (over the top but friends just went for birthday dinner).
For more affordable places, I'd say you can't go wrong with any of these:
The Place
Allen and Delancey
Babbo
Il Buco
Firenze
Morandi
Hope this helps!
meal to take on a plane
i got the best chicken sandwich i've ever had takeout from daddyo's in the village. i also ordered tater tots on the side and it was delicious. and i bet the sandwich may even be better cold and leftover.
Memorable 38th Anniversary Meal
By the way SP is fantastic! You certainly cannot go wrong with JG, but if that's too stuffy for you, I would say Landmarc in Time Warner Center. Telepan is about ten blocks north of LC and definitely gets nothing but high praise. For something a little more casual and more French, Cafe Luxembourg is fabulous on 72nd.
Trendy restaurant recommendation tonight for 4
ok here it goes. the first ones come to my mind are:
freemans - you MUST go here if you can
if not any of these will do:
the spotted pig
bobo
the little owl
allen and delancey
blue ribbon bakery
schiller's
i trulli
keep in mind the Web site tablexchange.com if you get really desperate. you can pay $20 and virtually eat anywhere you want in the city.
