2012 Food and Restaurant CHANGES and CLOSINGS
Well, I was at a PFLAG event this evening and a new restaurant opening this summer had some of their offerings set out complimentary. They will be located at 417 Danforth Ave. The former DAVOS will be transformed this summer into a restaurant called 417 Four One Seven. Executive Chef Kai Zyganiuk. I think it will be a positive addition to the Danforth. They served some very good pasta this evening. Did not get an idea of when they were opening this summer however.
NEW CONSOLIDATED Thread: Best Chicken Wings in GTA
Must have been a full moon recently because I completely agree with TexS on this. No breading ever on a Buffalo style wing. You can have breaded wings with Buffalo sauce on them. Butter is a must. The best Buffalo wings I ever had in the GTA was years ago at a pub called Quinn's on the Danforth. These days I find that only a few small time pubs get it right in Toronto and they are hit and miss. Duffs are good, but nothing to write home about.
Burger Stomper and Milkshake Bar - Danforth Ave
Well, I could throw a stone from my backyard to Don and Danny. This area has been in a flux for a few years. Never really finding it`s culinary niche. About 40 years ago there was a great Fish and Chip shop that sold a cone of chips wrapped in newspaper for about 15 cents from what I recall. Mom would allow me to spend about 3 dollars from her food money for a pep pizza from Danforth PIzza House once a week. But in my opinion what is missing on the Danny, is a great Fish and Chip joint, sorry Duckworth`s, you are too far off the strip.
Walmart launches premium private label line
Well, I guarantee that I won't be rushing through the door to line up for these however I feel that the level of competition in the food distribution network in Ontario (and Canada for that matter) is heating up.

If anyone here has a chance to try any of the new private label products, I would be interested in reading about it.
Awesome Non Toxic (Ceramic) Fry Pans !
Just bought one. I have a 15 year cast iron pan as well. So far, I am impressed with it. Will treat it properly and see where it take me. Got it at a Zellers closing sale.
St. Lawrence Market - "World's Best Food Market" in National Geographic List -
My brother owns a farm just outside of Lindsay. About 120 acres with a small orchard and mostly they plant hay. Leeks grow wild around the place and he gives away because there is not enough to sell to market and more than they can use. That's the way it is.
St. Lawrence Market - "World's Best Food Market" in National Geographic List -
SLM has spawned several local "Farmers Markets" across the city. The real unique part is the North Market in my opinion when our local produce comes on stream. I used to drive up to the HWY 7- HWY 48 areas to get produce from the farmers however I know I can go to the North Market, pay a little more, and get fresh produce direct from the farm without having to spend the gas money to go up north to get what I want. If I can get to the local Farmers Markets, I do that as well. For meat, I go to both South and North Market. For produce, I go to North when it is in season to get local. Otherwise, during the off-season, the south is importing the same produce as is Loblaws, Metro etc. and I can do better cost-wise at the big box. Just my humble opinion.
St. Lawrence Market - "World's Best Food Market" in National Geographic List -
I have been going to SLM as long as I can recall. I miss the "old days" when vendors would compete for your business by yelling out the price per pound and the one with the best set of lungs won the battle. Vendors willing to go toe-to-toe with the other. I tried playing one off against the other recently, and it worked. Got them into a bidding war over ground meat. Score one for Poorboy. Not the same as the old days, but still, I manage to find the odd gem and the North Market, when our homegrown produce comes on stream, is fabulous. Can't beat Ontario produce in full season.
NEW Best Pizza in Toronto Thread
Agreed on the Danforth Pizza House.
I think people are changing their tastes though. For my money it is the best "old school" pizza in town.
CRFA Show, Anyone here going?
I decided to attend the Canadian Restaurant and Food Association show this weekend.
Hoping to learn a little bit about the the upcoming trends.
Anyone else here going?
Will "tweet" to #CFRA and #TorEats #Chowhound
Thoughts will be posted here.
Truffle Oil in Toronto?
I heard that President's Choice has this out on the market. Is it decent compared to the others out there? I am finding a lot of ways to add this to my recipes.....
Fabranak - anyone been?
Agreed. and what they do to payback the community is admirable. They often tweet their daily specials @FABARNAKresto
DNISTER - Ukranian Deli - St. Lawrence Market
Otonabee, that was one we picked up, yes, the cherry kielbasa was excellent. We also picked up some bigos that was very tasty. The Montreal style smoked meat is on the radar for next weekend.
DNISTER - Ukranian Deli - St. Lawrence Market
It had been a few months since I went to the St. Lawrence Market. I had no idea what I wanted but I was looking for something different.
We found a nice little Ukrainian Deli tucked away in the lower level. If my memory serves me correctly they were in a different location not too long ago.
The place is called DNISTER and is run by a lovely couple. I spoke with them for a wee bit and I was pleased to to learn that they prepare all of their meats on their own and there are no preservatives. We picked up some wonderful kolbassa that was very tasty.
The proprietor also told me that he smokes his meats himself. I am now kicking myself in the pants for not picking up some of his Smoked Meat. I will next week however and let you know.
Looking for Romantic restaurant in Richmond Hill
Hoping someone can suggest a high end restaurant in Richmond Hill area that has charm for a special occasion.
Any help would be appreciated. Tis the season....
Winterlicious 2012 menus are out - anything CH worthy?
Just got home from Prime Steakhouse at Windsor Arms. Discovered a great Ripasso while I was there as well. A 2007 Palazzo Maffei, very smooth. Sadly, at the end of the meal, I wasn't paying attention and wound up wearing some of it.
Bread arrived shortly after we were seated.
We had the Wild Mushroom Soup with Truffle Oil Croutons and Caesar Salad and they were very tasty and ample portions.
For mains we both selected the 10 oz Char Grilled New York Striploin (21 Day Dry Aged)
Cremini Mushroom and Herb Pomme Puree. The steak was cooked to perfection for me, medium rare and the Mrs. ordered it Med-Well and felt it could have been done a little more at first glance howeve,r she was very happy with the overall flavour and tenderness once she started eating it. Very pleased.
Desserts were Chocolate Peanut Butter Bombe - Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse, Chocolate Glaze and Caramelized Peanuts and also the Pumpkin Crème Brulee respectively. Very decadent on both counts and yet not overly sweet, which is fine for my taste. George was our server and he was very attentive. In all, this was a very positive Winterlicious experience for us, outside of the wine incident lol. This was a "HIT". The Manager came over and engaged us and asked us about our dinner and the wine experience. Again, not for a second did we feel second class because we opted for the Winterlicious menu items. The manager even offered me soda to help with the wine spill that got on my tie. Will definitely be back. The Mrs will be going for Tea in the near future as well.
ISO meat pie shells
I am looking for pre-made pastry shells that can be used for beef or chicken individual pies. Not the tiny ones used for tarts and not the large ones used for pies.
Does anyone know if there is someplace in Toronto to purchase them?
Winterlicious 2012 menus are out - anything CH worthy?
Going to Windsor Arms this Sunday. Will let you know how it turns out. I usually tweet thoughts from @torontofoodie and then post here in CH. Have not seen a lot of reviews of Windsor Arms. Anyone here been lately?
Winterlicious 2012 menus are out - anything CH worthy?
Was at Ouzeri On the Danforth this evening for Winterlicious. I was impressed with the size of portions and the attentive service. Mind you it wasn't that busy. The vegetarian mousaka was very flavourful. For starters we each had Mezes which consists of taramosalata, humus, melitzanosalata served with grilled pita. The better half had the souvlaki and it was pretty much what you would expect. Desert was a coin toss but I selected the Loukomades and was not disappointed. I have heard that Winterlicious portions could be a little cut back at some places however we were both stuffed. Our server put the Winterlicious menu right out and encouraged us to order from it. All in all, good meal and excellent value. $25pp
Dinner with bf and my parents
Re: Sidecar - I love it. However the tables were very close in my opinion and you will find you are listening to conversations at the nearby tables and they yours. Not intimate, still has it's own charm and the close proximity to your neighbour makes for a different "local" type of experience with really good food.
German Restaurant - GTA ?
Hello there, I am looking for an authentic German restaurant in the GTA. Does anyone have any good suggestions?
TIA
P.F. Chang's ?? [moved from Ontario]
Well, a friend of mine is ecstatic that this restaurant is soon to open in Toronto. Apparently it is popular in the USA and the food is quite nice.
Has anyone tried any of their other locations and can comment.?
No info yet on location and opening date that I could see yet they are advertising positions available.
Best pizza in Toronto?
Could not agree more re: Danforth Pizza House! Angelo still takes the care with each one he bakes. I fondly think back to when his uncle was churning them out 40 years aqo.
Christmas Party Cancelled - Need new plans for downtown Toronto Friday night
Sidecar. Excellent choice! I will second that. I have been there and while the tables are close, it is like an old shoe, you are comfortable with it.
Royal Beef
Well, we have been going back for a while now as we needed a nice tritip :)
A couple of weeks ago they had some awesome chicken sausages that were to die for. This week we scored on some burgers that were labelled: Steak, Cheese and Chipotle burger. They were also awesome. ALL made on the premises. It's great to see that they are pushing the envelope a bit now. Quality of the meat, in my opinion, is back up there. Good to see Carmen still behind the counter.
Very tasty food - Raby's 66 Overlea Blvd, Thorncliffe Toronto
I drive past this place all the time so I will be sure to check them out. On a low carb diet right now but I am sure I can find something. I called to see what their hours were and they are: Weekdays 11:30 A to 11:30P and weekends 11:30 A to 10:30P apparently. Delivery starts at 12 noon and goes to 10PM. The discussion was slightly confusing but my sense was that they charge for deliveries outside of a 3KM range. Would like to see them do well as this may fill a void when people in an office want to order lunch from the same place. Lot's to choose from.
Pumpkin Foods in Toronto
About 3 years ago we were out and had a pumpkin soup. It was pumpkin chestnut soup at Marcel's on King St. W. as I recall. We had no idea what to expect. Never had it before and we absolutely loved it. I am going to try my hand at making pumpkin soup myself this year.
The David Duncan House????
Had very similar experience. As we left the guy made a rude comment to my wife. I will admit that I had a very good experience about 3 years ago but this past summer we had a "miss". Partly our fault . It's not a great restaurant in my opinion, but it's not bad either. The way in which we were handled was irksome. They have some very long term staff there and they are good. A nice old school Caesar Salad is up there with the best. So if I am going to drop some decent money in a place, this is not one that I would readily go back to. If it was on someone else's dime, sure.
Susur's SHANG goes bang!
I have his book, A Culinary Life, to give you when we meet up fD. I think that market is very saturated and really, money is no object when it comes to really good food and a great experience in my point of view. If the product is there, so is the money in my opinion. Susur is a very talented Chef, no doubt. Let's hope he has not lost his passion and rebounds from this as a lot of good chefs have done. A focused Susur in our market is a good thing. :)
