Take out Tipping

Good question. Also when I hosted at a casual dining place, I wrote a ticket, the kitchen made the food and then I ran the food from the kitchen to the customer. No tipped employees touched those orders. I never got tips and didn't expect any because it really wasn't much work. Of course it would have been a nice surprise...

Weight Loss: Emergency protein to have around the house?

Get black beans or refried beans and make tacos using corn tortillas, salsa and some Fage yogurt instead of sour cream. For the refried beans make sure you get fat free or vegetarian (read: no lard).
I also make egg tacos by scrambling egg whites with some finely chopped veggies and either a little bit of pesto or some hot sauce.

Chi-town eating emergency!

I like Cafe Iberico for tapas. I've always had consistently good, inexpensive meals there. It's lively and centrally located as well.

Bringing home what is left over from a potluck?

I just had a potluck dilemma! My concern was getting my bowl back from a host that I had never met and would likely not see again anytime soon (we were celebrating a mutual friend). I didn't know if it was rude to ask for my bowl when there were still people at the party. Following someone's lead, I asked if she had a tupperware I could put the leftovers in She actually requested that we leave some (because she liked it) and take some (because there was far too much for she and her husband to eat). I was happy take leftovers. I didn't know how many people were attending so I made a huge portion for what turned out to be a small party. However, I acted on the assumption that the host was going to keep the food. I think that's polite and I would have happily scooped all of the food into a huge tupperware for her to keep had she asked.

Looking for pasta salad recipes without mayo

I also make a good pesto dressed pasta salad.
Sun dried tomatoes, sliced red bell pepper, artichoke hearts, pine nuts

Inexperienced cook trying to veggie grill...HELP

I know you asked about veggies, but I would also grill some marinated firm tofu on skewers. It's good served with peanut sauce.

Why does anyone buy flour tortillas?

I guess you haven't had good flour tortillas.

cleaning out my freezer challenge!

I'd make a cherry pie with a streusel top using some almond paste in the topping.
Mixed berry smoothies for breakfast.
Add the chipotles to your pound of hamburger for a tasty taco filling. Serve with a corn and black bean salad.
Meyer lemon and raspberry slushies! And throw in the vodka, who wants to ship it?

thrifting confessions

When I had my first apartment I picked up a shopping bag that said "FREE dishes" and lo and behold a set of dishes lovingly wrapped up for someone to take. At a local thrift shop in a trendy part of town my friend and I would alwyas see Alessi items. I got a Michael Graves teapot for $11, and we sold it in the store where I worked for $122 at the time!

Mystery Wedding Gift for Kitchen - Help me identify!

Ooh have you ever used it on a block of tofu?

Mystery Wedding Gift for Kitchen - Help me identify!

I guess it's mostly used for mashing potatos.
Have a look and see if this is it.

Mystery Wedding Gift for Kitchen - Help me identify!

It sounds like a ricer. You can use it for mashing potatoes or vegetables. I'm sure it has other uses, but I really don't know what they are.

Best Homemade Salad Dressing Recipes

For a creamy dressing that only has "good" fat I blend avocado, lime juice, salt, and a little adobo sauce from a can of chipotle peppers. Also you have to add quite a bit of water to thin it out. Sorry, I don't measure, but I think I used 1/4-1/2 of an avacado and 1/2-1 whole lime. Of course you can add whatever flavors you like but using the avacado makes a really creamy dressing without mayo.
I serve with a salad of romaine, black beans, cilantro, corn, green onions, and tomato.

Dried California Chili Pods

I just used California chiles for the first time in the Chicken Chile Verde recipe that I found here on Chow. Really good for a party.

Which snacks to beat pre-dinner munchies/diet sabotage?

If i'm not really hungry but just feeling 'snacky" I have a few wasabi peas. I only need a few because the flavor is so strong. If I'm actually hungry I'll have a hard boiled egg, plain fat free yogurt with fresh berries, or a small smoothie made of frozen berries and 1/2 cup of soy milk. It's hard isn't it?

If you were moving to Chicago and didn't have a car...

...and if you take a 15 minute stroll southwest of Clark and Foster you can go to Over Easy for breakfast and Ventrella for espresso and gelato!

Pink nibbles

Martha Stewert had a recipe online for grapefruit sandwich cookies. How about pink grapefruit sandwich cookies. Also maybe little raspberry meringue cookies, fruit sorbet with chocolate sauce.
Savory is harder. Smoked salmon tarts, shrimp salad on crostini...

non dairy dessert recipe for a BBQ

Grilled pineapple would be good with that poundcake too.

How do you eat your smoked salmon?

On Wasa rye crisps with Greek yogurt (or sour cream) and fresh dill.

Mother's Day Brunch and THE MEETING OF THE MOMS.

I am planning a brunch for my boyfriend's family myself. I don't have specific recipes, but I was thinking of making a strata and a baked french toast. Both are completely customizable to the ingredients you like. Also it's nice that they can be prepared in advance and baked that morning. Less stressful than flipping pancakes at the last minute! Do a recipe search and I'm sure you'll find lots of great options for these two dishes.
Good luck!

Chicken Challenge

BBQ chicken pizza is a favorite in my house. Poach chicken breasts, shred and mix with BBQ sauce. Top any pizza dough (I like the raw whole wheat dough from Trader Joe's) with more sauce, the chicken, caramelized onion and just a small amount of any cheese you like. After it's baked, sprinkle with fresh cilantro.

Best use of good feta in a main dish

Another good one for next time is to stuff a chicken breast with spinach and feta, add some mint and oregano to it too.

Any ideas for leftover roast chicken?

Toss in a mustardy vinaigrette with French green beans and small roasted potatoes. It's really good on salad greens or just by itself

Great Bakery that can accomodate egg allergy

Try Bleeding Heart Bakery on Chicago. They make lots of vegan baked goods as well as non-vegan. They are delicious!

Frozen Fish at Trader Joes

They have a "seafood mix" of calamari, scallops and shrimp that I like. I saute with some olive oil, garlic and a white wine and toss it with cooked pasta, broccoli, and artichoke hearts.

College students' first time in London

A fun "traditional" English place is S&M Cafe (Suasage and Mash that is). I don't eat red meat so I always feel like I'm missing out on the old fashioned English meals that are very meaty. S&M has meals like an all day English breakfast and the namesake sausage and mash with vegetarian options. It's across the road from the Spitalfield's market too which is also a great place to pick up some snacks for for later in the day.

bulgarian food

There are a couple places on Irving Park, west of California. One is called Beograd Meat Market and the other is Balkan Food Store. I'm not sure if the Balkan Food Store is a resstaurant or just a shop. I haven't been to either one but I think Time Out has given Beograd a good review. Also just down the street at Irving Park and Hamlin is the Bulgarian Cultural Center. Maybe they know of some good spots to hit.

DeLuxe fish sandwich, Champaign

In the 90's there was a Thai cafeteria in the YMCA. Is that what you're talking about?
