Sour grapes

I visited my local Jons at Hollywood and Vermont last night, and saw fruit I'd never seen before. They were listed as "Sour Grapes" at $1.29 per pound. They look like small champagne grapes, but are spaced further apart. They are green, and sour like a Willy Wonka candy. I ended up pairing them with some sweet fruit and a Gewertz.

Does anyone have more knowledge on these types of grapes? Their actual name? Origin? Are they just normal grapes that aren't ripe? Google searches for 'sour grapes' find information on the idiom, but not the fruit.

Cheers,

Restaurants for dogs

LA County Health does not allow dogs (except seeing-eye dogs) in restaurants or on patios. I hate the fact that some restaurants don't know about this code, or simply do not care about the health code.

The hungry cat for the lobster roll???

I was visiting family in Maine last week, and I love telling them about the price of Hungry Cat's lobstah roll. They think it is wicked funny. Then we went and got lobstah and fried seafood (clams, oystahs, haddock, shrimp, etc.) at a restaurant/shack near a friend's house in Seabrook, New Hampshah.

Ceviche

Ciudad in Downtown LA! This is one of the places I take tourists as they come through Los Angeles. I don't know if they still have it, but they used to have a Ceviche Sampler, of anywhere from 3 to 6 types of ceviche.

Sports bar in downtown LA?

Ah, I just looked up the L.A. Live information, and there will be an ESPN Zone, set to open in October 2008. Won't help you for this weekend, but perhaps will help future chowhounds searching for 'downtown' and 'sports'.

East Coast Chinese food in California

I grew up in Malden, MA, so I've got an idea of what you're getting at. I always visit Kowloon and a couple of other places when I visit Boston these days. So there's our touchstone.

Try Chi Dynasty in Los Feliz. They just reopened in a new location, and I'm glad to have them as my neighbor.

Sports bar in downtown LA?

Yeah, with Trifecta closed and Grand Ave Sports Bar closed, I send a lot of people to Fox Sports Bar at the Staples Center. I don't know if the Yardhouse is planning on positioning themselves as a sport bar when they open at L.A. Live later this year.

Remember, scalping tickets is illegal, and you shouldn't walk to Olympic to pick them up there from a stranger.

People come to Casey's looking for a sports bar, but it's really an Irish pub, so we don't usually have the sound on our 7 televisions, except for the big games (a dozen times a year). We show a good mix of European and American sports.

Irish Food in LA?

I'm curious. What is a 'faux Irish bar', or, how does one tell the difference from an authentic?

Cask beer on hand pump?

Seven Grand had a cask night in January. Casey's may have cask nights later in 2008. I continue to make rumors of Craftsman casks in the hope that I'll see one someday.

Best cask I've had around here was O'Brien's in San Diego.

My menu is at bigcaseys.com, but here's the latest list:

Be on the lookout for cask-conditioned beer in '08!

Taco Truck Catering?

I chose and worked with Lety's Catering. 323-353-8303, ask for Liz. This was for a fun holiday party for the crew of a restaurant, and we all loved the tacos. Highly recommended to other chowhounds.

Taco Truck Catering?

I'm planning a party for about 40 people, and I'd like to have a Taco Truck as a caterer. I'd like to have the taco truck parked right next to our party downtown on a Sunday evening. Any suggestions, or do I just pull over on the side of the road and ask a random taco truck owner?

Cheers!

Father's Office 2 open yet?

Saw the blueprints a while back. If I remember right, it'll be 3 times bigger than FO1.

(Not trying to sidetrack, but Yardhouse will open in Downtown LA in September 2008. Not my favorite place, but at least another multitap is opening.)

Cheers!

Does "Cut" Play Reservation Games? [moved from LA board]

As a restaurant manager, I can tell you that BlueHerons has it right. I think Ric is being a little difficult here. Perhaps I can try summing up:
- At a busy restaurant, a "no reservations" policy could result in higher sales
- This "no reservations" policy can be for a portion or all of the restaurant, and it could be for a portion or all of its business hours
- Lying about your restaruant's reservation policy is in Bad Form

By the way, as a manager, you occassionaly have to deal with people that don't understand restaurant operations. Have you ever had to stare at a group of walk-in guests at a host stand for 15 minutes while there are clearly open (reserved) tables in their view?

Cheers!

Does "Cut" Play Reservation Games? [moved from LA board]

Some restaurants set aside a portion of their seats for walk-in business. I can understand sizing that portion depending on business trends.

Has the Brite Spot in Echo Park gone completely downhill?

I visit about 5 times a year. Nothing to complain about - just a good local diner without the 'pizazz' of Fred 62. So I take the tourists to Fred 62, and I take the wife to Brite Spot.

Casey's Bar & Grille (review+pics)

I hired a new Chef 4 weeks ago. His name is Bart Allen, and he's worked at many places in the area, including a great pub called Matt Denny's in Sierra Madre. We just changed the Dessert Menu last week, so the crusty brownie is banished from Casey's. The weird urinals will be replaced in the upcoming months.

Nice pics!

Best beer in Vegas?

I've been to a couple of the brewpubs in Las Vegas, and there was nothing memorable. For a memorable beer experience, go off the strip to Rosemary's Restaurant. rosemarysrestaurant.com. They have a good selection, and pair their kitchen items with beer.

Jonathan Gold wins Pulitzer Prize

Our comrade-in-arms Jonathan Gold, LA Weekly restaurant reviewer, won a Pulitzer Prize today for criticism for his "zestful, wide-ranging restaurant reviews, expressing the delight of an erudite eater."

This is the first Pulitzer for a restaurant reviewer! This is the first Pulitzer for LA Weekly. Let's continue to raise the great public debate on the best of the best in food!

A keg for everyone?

I don't believe Mark sells growlers of Craftsman Beer. The smallest amount you can get is a 5 gallon keg. For the current availability of beer styles, call 626-296-ALES (2537). I recommend ordering days in advance to make sure the beer will be ready for you.

A keg for everyone?

Go local. Go with great beer. Mark Jilg makes great beer at Craftsman Brewery in Pasadena - craftsmanbrewing.com.

For the "majority of beer drinkers", their 1903 lager or their Hefeweizen would probably be best. For other tastes, Mark makes other beer styles - ask about availability.

Beer Chemistry

I am not a pro brewer, but as I understand, hops have alpha and beta acids. Alpha acids give that bitter taste, with a full texture on the mouth. They also help with preservation. Beta acids give the floral aroma that are found in IPAs, etc.

Over 200 compounds come from hops, and there are more technical people that could tell you more technical information than I can.

Trader Joes Hofbrau

As a former GB guy, I can verify that TJ's gets most of their beer from GB. Some specialties are made by Unibroue.

The beers are pretty damn good. Especially if the Unibroue ones are on sale, you can get a great price for them.

Beer migration to a new brewery

Most brewers will adjust their recipe according to the seasonal ingredients - for example, if the hops are more bitter than usual, use less hops.

Even with the same water, ingredients, and recipe, a new brewery can end up with a different beer due to kettle size, cleaning procedures, bottling line, etc.
