Pomona Valley Mining Company
well i ordered an apple martini and i didn't taste apple at all. the fact that it was kind of warm made it harder to drink, it burned =(
your right though, when was the last time someone complained about strong drinks, its suppose to be a good thing.
Pomona Valley Mining Company
I went a few months ago. The filet mignon is okay but a bit chewy (they tend to overcook), the coconut shrimp is delish, but the martini's are way too strong and it doesn't feel right sipping it from that jar they put it in. The salad buffet is nothing to brag about, but the soups are decent. 6.5 out of 10 IMHO.
Best Sushi in San Gabriel Valley / Pasadena?
I went to Maki & Sushi last week, their small lobster roll is delicious. My SO ordered the mixed sashimi plate...salmon and tuna were quite fresh. However, some of the other pieces were still frozen, does this mean it's not fresh? Their fusion rolls are good.
Best Sushi in San Gabriel Valley / Pasadena?
I remember them speaking Japanese (chefs and a waitress) and my SO was really surprised. Can anyone else confirm? One thing that we didn't like was that most sushi items are written/posted above the bar. So if you're sitting at a table the menu they give you doesn't cover much and you have to get up to see the specials.
Best Sushi in San Gabriel Valley / Pasadena?
I went to Z Sushi last month due to the rave reviews and wasn't impressed. I much prefer Kiyosuzu on Baldwin...it's yummy!
Where can I get an awesome lobster
I still remember the lobster at Water Grill...yummmm. I went 2 years ago, not sure if it's still as good.
red bean mochi ice cream?
The red bean must be really good, I should try it next time.
Van's Bakery or Vanille Patisserie?
I love Cathy's Bakery on Las Tunas. If you go there early enough they have this wonderful mango cake and it's beautifully decorated or pre-order it.
My SO bought a Van's chocolate cake a few months ago and I found it terribly dry.
Vanille is okay, the cake is moist but the flavor is lacking. We got a strawberry cake last time with whipped strawberries/yogurt in the center. It looks pretty but not worth it IMHO.
red bean mochi ice cream?
I went to Trader Joe's last week in Monrovia and they were fully stocked in all flavors (red bean, green tea, strawberry, mango, chocolate). I love the strawberry ones! Their price is always 2.99 and Ranch 99 is randomly priced sometimes as high as 4.59! How is the mango one btw?
Info - La Vie in Rosemead
Thanks for your input everyone! The primb rib sounds yummy, do they have chocolate souffle? This site always gets me hungry.
Info - La Vie in Rosemead
Hi,
Has anyone been here recently? What's good to order and are reservations needed? I'm planning to go this weekend and any opinions will be greatly appreciated. I've always passed by and this will be my first time trying it. Thanks.
Favorite Grill (in Alhambra) ... closed!?
already? i passed by last week and it was still there. so sad.
Best lasagna in LA?
IMO, I had lasagna at Petrillo's and it was drenched in sauce. I couldn't taste the noodles or the meat sauce.
Sunday Bistro in Alhambra
I've been a few times with large parties...
-Chicken steak with fish fingers is tasty
-Rice with assorted meat in clay pot is popular and good
-Filet Mignon medallions are too chewy, not good
-Spaghetti with meat sauce is average but way too oily
-I like their club sandwiches better than other cafes
-Chicken wings are delicious but sprinkled with MSG (you can actually see the crystals)
Overall typical like you said.
Review on Brodard Cafe - Rosemead
I just came back from dinner at this fairly new cafe located on Valley Blvd. and Muscatel. I have read other threads that say the owners are the same as Nha Trang. What makes this different from all the other million cafes we have around here is the Vietnamese menu in addition to the cafe menu. You can have a club sandwich or pho, something for everyone!
I ended up ordering the New York Steak and Pork Chop combo which included a choice of: rice, pasta, or fries. The presentation is nicer than your average cafe, but the portions are smaller. Although, not too bad for $9.95. The steak was tender and juicy, but there was a lot of fat I had to cut off, and the black pepper sauce had a hint of shrimp flavor (weird huh). The grilled pork chop was lean, tender as well, but really thin. The flavor is light and not too salty. The fries were crispy and delicious, they said they just buy the fries from a wholesaler and fry them...so no secret recipe there. After all this I was still hungry (like I said the portions are small).
SO...I ordered a Pho Tai and split half with my younger brother. The broth is light as well, not a strong beef flavor but I guess it helps when you add your own sauces. The thin slices of meat were fresh and are served raw on the side so you can add them to your soup and the noodles are decent.
Overall, this place is pretty good considering the cheap prices. Their liquor license is still pending and it seems as though the decor isn't completely finished. So if your passing through why not give it a try, the waiter was really friendly and service is quick.
Villa Sorriso in Old Pas-- suggestions?
It was more like a slight resistance all around and I found it chewy. I went before and hadn't experienced this. I assume they had an off day.
Villa Sorriso in Old Pas-- suggestions?
The space is definitely nice. My friends and I went a few times before and the food was pretty good. However, on Saturday I took my SO and his friends there for lunch and they were dissapointed. I usually order the Chicken Pesto Fettuccini, this time the pasta was undercooked and the service was slow (it wasn't even crowded at 2pm). I also agree with it being oversauced. My SO ordered the Penne Arrabiata and the pasta was undercooked as well, he said the flavor wasn't good and barely ate half. We also had the Garlic-Roasted Mussels which were tasty but small in size. Someone at our table had one of the sandwiches but found it drenched in this bitter green sauce, also ate half and left he rest.
Based on this poor experience, I probably won't go again and I felt really bad the I suggested this place. On the plus side, the mango lemonade is yummy and the mixed drinks are delicious.
Please help -- Where to go for your favorite CALIFORNIA ROLL?
You must've have been the lucky ones...unfortunately we were rushed out while the waitress and manager stared at us...waiting. When you go to Kiyosuzu try the Spicy Cat's Eye Roll. IIRC, it's spicy tuna deep fried in tempura with a ponzu sauce. YUMMMM.
Please help -- Where to go for your favorite CALIFORNIA ROLL?
Too bad they're so rude at Gin, don't make the kids suffer! I like Kiyosuzu on Baldwin and Duarte. I went there after reading the recs on chowhound. They have a variety of rolls and are as decent as Gin but with way better service.
SGV: Need fun, casual place, with beer!
I'm surprised I haven't noticed this place before...we're always on Hungtington. The environment looks like a nice change, much more mom and pop. I'll show him the thread and let him choose...thanks everyone!
SGV: Need fun, casual place, with beer!
Hi Hounds,
We're celebrating my SO's birthday this Saturday...I'm open to all types of food as long as everyone has their own entree. Keep in mind everyone is on a budget so $20-$30 pp with drinks is good. Just because we're tight on money doesn't mean our taste buds have to suffer right?! This place should be a casual place where the guys can have their rounds of beer with dinner and not be rushed, around the SGV, and with tasty food!
I can't wait to hear your suggestions, please help!
Thanks!
DUMPLING HOUSE in Arcadia - AWFUL
Yes Dumpling House on Rosemead is yummy, also Luscious Dumplings on New and Las Tunas (they have weird hours). Run a search...there's a detailed thread on them. I think it's hilarious how he tried the Tofu, hahahh that's classic!
French Fries - How do you like them?
Mocasalsa has super fries! Instead of using chips, they top the fries with chunks of beef, sour cream, guacamole (sp?), onions, beans, and cheese. So yummy, your heart will feel the pain (and your waistline too)!
Is this the same as your "pachos"?
Poll: What restaurants do you eat in most often?
SGV:
Young Dong Tofu House - #1 BBQ Beef Rib combo with the clam tofu
Jim's Burgers - yum chicken dinner
Wendy's - chili
CPK
will add more later (time to leave work)...=)
The Best Moderately Priced Restaurants
Whenever I pass by La Vie, it's always closed. What are the hours? I've heard many good things about it.
New Crab Place in SGV ..sort of like Boiling Crab
My uncle in TX ships out crawfish and says that its so popular there that they sell premade sauce for it. It could be a powder that you just add water to, try the Asian supermarkets. Sorry I don't have more info.
Your favorite word/expression to describe food/flavors....
When I was younger I didn't like salad. I always said "it tastes like the way grass smells after you mow the lawn." Or tomatoes "they taste too raw."
The Water Trick [split from LA]
I should have read this sooner, last year when we went to Ruth's Chris they asked if we wanted water. So I figure since the waiter asked it somehow was complimentary. NOPE we were billed $8 for Pellegrino which I saw in the super market for waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper.
A lesson learned, more alcohol please.
