Veg Friendly in Charlotte
Friends have raved about Real Food, it's very close to downtown: http://www.realfoodclt.com/Welcome.html
You can take the light rail or a short cab ride.
The Lodge in Charlotte - anyone been?
From the guy who brought us Mac's and Bonterra. I can't find a menu on-line. TIA!
The Liberty-Charlotte NC
Do you know if it's non-smoking? How about kid-friendly? I can't wait to try it out regardless!
Looking for opinions on a good upper-end seafood restaurant in Charlotte
how 'bout gw fin's downtown? have heard great reviews. they have another resto in new orleans...
everyday foods in Charlotte? off Carmel Road
There's Bombay Grill and Thai Taste - i think that's the name - on 51 towards Carolina Place Mall. At Carmel and 51 is a pizza place - Carmella's? There's Panera's for salads and sandwiches, Tamarind Indian - it's OK, not as good as Bombay Grille, Bonefish Grill - seafood chain. I'm sure there's more, but I'm still exploring that area myself.
Moving to Charlotte. Afraid of the food
Nope. I thought they started serving brunch, but not yet. They're on FaceBook and they post updates, so I'll keep you updated when they do start.
Moving to Charlotte. Afraid of the food
$20 - 40 dinners: Rooster's, Barrington's, Ratcliffe on the Green, and Lulu's. Google them, I think they all have websites.
For sushi, I rec. New Zealand Cafe in Matthews - O.M.G. - the tuna tataki and the tuna carpaccio was unlike anything I have ever eaten. The fish was by far the best quality tuna i have ever had the pleasure to eat - seriously. I have heard good things about Mai, but haven't been since their South Blvd. days. Stay away from Ru San's and Nikko is OK in a pinch - just don't go on the weekends. Haven't eaten at Musashi, but have heard good things.
Deli: I'm partial to Chris' on Independence, but Katz in Arboretum is as authentic as you'll get here.
Creative breakfast: Soul Gastrolounge will be serving weekend brunch soon. I hear the lake area has good breakfast joints, just don't remember the names.
Vietnamese: Lang Van
Chinese: in the South, I'm partial to Shanghai. The owners are amazing people. Friendly and they remember EVERYONE. It's sorta scary. They have wonderful, fresh food and always have tasty specials.
Chocolate in Charlotte
I don't know of any brick and mortar retailer that specializes in chocolate. But the secret choclatier looks good as well.

OK, we were able to take a peek at Soul last week. While the space itself looks fabulous, we have yet to eat the food. We couldn't put another piece of food in our mouths after a full steak dinner. Drinks, well, that's another story... I hear they're opening tonight, so if any 'hounds are in the area and are curious, check it out and give us the deets!
Chinese food - Charlotte NC
Don't know when they changed hands, but my husband went there a couple months ago at lunch after his lunch companion INSISTED they eat there. The only person in the restaurant had a laptop. As my husband approached them, they said, "I'm getting ready to give this restaurant a 72 rating. I don't advise you eat here." They've been closed since.
Greensboro rehearsal dinner
Thanks, I'll definitely check GVG out. I contacted Flemings, but have yet to receive a menu.
And, brentk, yes, there is a red meat theme - the groom, my brother, is a meataterian. I think the last time I saw him eat a green, leafy vegetable was in 1987. There will probably be about 25 - 30 attending dinner, so if you know of any other chef-driven restos that can accomodate us it would be highly appreciated.
Greensboro rehearsal dinner
Hi,
I'm helping my family in choosing and organizing a rehearsal dinner in June. Here is a list of suggested restos from the bride:
Villa Rosa Italian
Kabuto
Solaris Tapas
Leblon steakhouse
Green Valley Grill
Chop House Grill
PF Chang's
Flemings
I'm not sure what our budget is yet on this, so what do you recommend for 1) sky's the limit 2) budget concious, but tasty.
Any other recommendations are also appreiated!
TIA!

I'm awaiting the opening of Soul Gastrolounge - where the Perch used to be. And a wine bar is opening below that - formerly Lotus...What about Common House, has anyone heard what they're about?
Great Mediterranean Grocer in So. Charlotte - Sahara
It does sound good.
BTW, if you feel intimidated, out of place at other ethnic stores, don't take it personally. I'm Asian American and I'm treated the same. Some cultures aren't known for friendliness or eye contact. It shouldn't be taken as intimidation, just seen as a difference in social behaviors.
Great Wall of China, Charlotte NC
I'm partial to Shanghai at Quail Corners. They run good specials - last week I had the spicy chicken, shrimp bok choy special - yum! The owners are accomodating and friendly. They know I like spicy dishes and will always bump it up to suit my taste.
Thai Orchid Charlotte NC
We've been driving out to Monsoon all these years, glad to know there's an alternative. Is it baby or kid friendly?
La Unica, Charlotte. My New Salsa Addiction.
If you're in the area, Taqueria Mexico on South Blvd. is def. worth checking out. It's about a block south of La Unica. It's sort of hidden b/ween a check cashing place and a hair salon. I LOVE their green salsa.
Sunday Morning Breakfast in Charlotte (Not Brunch)
Yes, Eddie's is great for breakfast - forgot about them. Hotel Charlotte serves brunch.
Sunday Morning Breakfast in Charlotte (Not Brunch)
The OPH, is OK, not great. I find CLT is lacking in good breakfast restos. And the one on South Blvd. is closed.
John's is not open on Sundays. Ever since Anderson's closed, I'm not happy with what's out there. Skyland and Landmark are 24 hr. diners. Good at 3 AM when you need to sober up, not so much any other time.
A nice Christmas eve LATE dinner near the airport in Charlotte
By the time you deplane, get your bags, etc., it will be 10 or later. I don't think you'll find anything besides a bar or a 24 hr. diner...I think Sir Edmond Haley's is your best bet. It's a bar with, if memory serves me correctly, a menu that's better than your average bar. You may want to call and confirm if they're serving food late that night.
Dish (Charlotte) closed?
I thought it was closed, as well, while pulling up in front of it for lunch yesterday. It's open. The sign must have fallen off...
World class Pizza coming to Charlotte ?
Really, I never had a problem parking there. I was a server at Town several years ago and before that was a regular at the wine bar next door. You take a right into the parking deck from Trade, right before that bar and Town.
Charlotte, yet again, this time pizza
I forgot about Intermezzo on Central. When they first opened, I heard great reviews on their pizza. Can anyone confirm?
Charlotte, yet again, this time pizza
Fuel is across the street on College, but it's open for debate on whether it's good or not.
If you're getting your chicken during the day, ride the light rail into the South End district and go to Price's Chick. Coop. Sorry, don't remember which stop - Bland St. maybe? If at night, take the rail north and get it at Mert's on College and 6th.
Non-Q lunch off I-85, around Charlotte-Spartanburg-Greenville
I have to disagree - there's several vegetarian options on their menu. Veggie burgers, soy dogs, veggie chili, etc.
http://www.penguindrivein.com/menu.htm
And it can be kid friendly during the day. At night is when the freaks come out.
Charlotte, Solo
For great Italian near SouthPark, try Portofino's. The owners are from Italy and they are friendly and accomodating.
I second the Penguin suggestion. That area of town is a great place to bar hop & people watch. Dish restaurant, Snug Harbor, Thomas Street Tavern, Common Market, etc. all make it an interesting part of town.
And Roosters is wonderfu l- great, simple, fresh food.
Charlotte Drive-Ins
I realized that when I responded - but I just couldn't make a rec. for either South 21 or BBQ King - isn't it the food that's important? At least for me it is!
(The Penguin needs to add the Charlotte Roller Derby girls as car hops - how cool would that be?)
I ate at Carpe Diem for the 1st time... (Charlotte)
Haven't been in awhile, but their menu is consistently great. From what I can remember, I always ordered one of their specials and have never been disappointed. I like to pick several items on the menu and ask the bartender or server which is popular/signature dish or their personal favorite. NEVER ask a server an open-ended question about the menu - they may steer you to the most expensive item!
Charlotte Drive-Ins
IMO the Penguin is worth the drive over BBQ and 21 South combined. From what I remember, their patties were thin, flat & flavorless. Penguin burgers are sooo much better. They use fresh ground beef that's hand pattied everyday. And I've gotten to know almost all burger joints in town - I'm 37 weeks prego.
Anyway, the Penguin has been around for over 50 years and those guys pack that place in everyday for a reason - good, quality food, almost all of it made in-house. Try the fried pickles - I HATE pickles, but will eat them there. I always get a take out order of their banana pudding to enjoy for later.
Good luck, hope you enjoy your CLT visit!
