Not convenient from Balston if you don't have a car, but soooo worth it!

I agree with this if you're looking for good coffee and great pastries - plus it's a cute little place.

Fontaine Cafe and Creperie has yummy crepes and pastries, as well as other great choices. I love this place for breakfast/brunch. Seriously.

For standard breakfast fare, and a local scene for sure, try Table Talk on Duke Street.

If you want to venture over to Del Ray, Evening Star has a great brunch.

Chinese Restaurant Mustard

I'm going to try the mustard butter. I bet that would be really good with some pretzel bread, in particular. Thanks!

Chinese Restaurant Mustard

I love the little packets of Chinese mustard that accompany my Chinese delivery. I'm sure there are also brands and types I can buy. However, I'm wondering if people have used or have ideas on how to incorporate these in my home cooking. Maybe something a bit healthier than using it to dip fried food in. Thoughts???

Good suggestions for dining (with restrictions) near Crystal City Hyatt?

I would definately try Kora. It is very close walking distance and just opened recently. There are plenty of optins for you. I think you should find some solid options. And, I've found their food quite tasty. They also have a reduced price menu at the bar during happy hour -- though I'm not sure if those options would fit with your restrictions.

If you are willing to take a short (five bucks or so) cab ride or make a longer walk, I would go to the neighbor hood Del Ray (along Mount Vernon Ave. in Alexandria...it's right down the road from your hotel, really). There are many excellent options. I woul suggest RTs for seafood/cajun, the Evening Star and Del Merei Grill. All should have options for you.

Co Co Sala

I'm planning a little shindig for a friend's birthday and want to start w/dinner somewhere we haven't been and -- of course -- tasty and cool. I was wondering what others' takes are on Co Co Sala. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Asian London Broil Marinade

I'm a wee bit simple in this area. I would make a concoction of Coke, garlic and soy sauce and marinade it for while. Yum! I had BBQ about 15+ years ago with a Philipino friend's family. His dad used this simple little marinade and I have never forgotten it and do it myself now, too!

arlington near the crystal city metro

I would agree with the suggestions for Jaleo and Bebo. You could easily go over $30 with liquor, but without you are in the green. Other than those two, nothing stands out in my mind that you could walk to -- and I live over here. If you want to take a long walk or a short cab to Pentagon Row, I would suggest the Asian Bistro or Lebanese Taverna. Just say no to the Creperie and Tapas places.

Whatever you do don't check out Crystal City Restaurant. Unless you like greasy food and girls in pasties dancing the pole. (Sorry, couldn't help myself.)

The Afghan restaurant is definately, definately worth it. Super tasty. You are correct tho -- the appearance is a turn off. I think it's kind of cool inside. There are murals of Afghanistan and its old buddhas and such that were since destoyed by the Taliban.

How long do things keep?

I try to buy fish and use it the same day. The next day may be OK, but after that I wouldn't push it. Chicken I try to use that day or the next -- otherwise, I freeze it and then thaw the day I plan to use. Meat, I treat like chicken.

Veggies last longer, but don't eat them too past their prime. For example, some leafy greens can grow bacterias and such if left too long.

Baked spaghetti

I would think that covering it in foil would serve to steam it a bit. I would suggest no foil...

Mid-range, casual DC?

I'd try Matchbox in PennQuarter. If your part is larger than six, you can make a reservatino, which would be preferable as there is usually a wait -- though, I'd say it's worth it.

While strolling the museums, try the National Indian Museum's cafeteria (I know, 'ick', right? But it really is quite good).

17th Street Corridor

I just ate at Floriana recently (Q & 17th). It was super good! It's right across from Annie's (which is good, too). I would definately recomend it.

Best Lasagna in NoVa-not Balt or DC

There's a neighborhood joint called Monroe's in Del Ray on Commonwealth & Monroe. I had their lasagna the other day and it was quite tasty. Interestingly enough, I ordered the portabello lasagna and they made the regular meat kind, which I accepted (with the offer of free desert, natch). I'm glad I did. It was yummy.

A restaurant to linger

Evening Star in Del Ray (Alexandria) is good. They are decently priced, the foods good and they have a bar in the back, as well as a lounge upstairs. Nice chill ambiance, too.

You might also consider Rustico in Old Town (well, at the very far end of Old Town) and chill there for a bit and hit Buzz, a desert, coffee, drinks place that's is right across the tiny street and stays open until midnight.

I concur that Tallula might be OK, too.

I can't think of anywhere worth noting in Old Town off-hand. Two restaurants that might be good to try ar the Majextic and Eastmans, but I'm not sure if that's quite what you are looking for...

Absinthe -- cocktails

I've seen the posts on where to get a bottle of absinthe, but I'm looking for places that serve Absinthe. I would like to try it, but don't necessarily want to buy a bottle (it's not the price -- per se, tho). Any run-ins with the little 'green fairy'?

Are They Still Around?

Al Tiramisu in Dupont (on P Street). It used to be great. Luigi, the owner and chef, is awesome. His brother open a restaurant on U Street not long ago that was pretty decent though I can't recall the name. I never go to Tiramisu any moer -- I never remember it.

Favorite Foodie Stores

If we are talking wine stores, I have to throw the Daily Planet and Wine in. It's in Del Ray (Alexandria) and sells some food, including a decent array of cheeses and fresh breads.

Favorite Foodie Stores

The Meditarean bakery (or store) on Pickett in Alexandria. I second the Italian Store in Arlington and the Courthouse Farmer's Market on Saturday. Wegman's rockks, too. Also, MOMs (My Organic Market).

Favorite Cheap(er) Eats in No.VA?

Alladins in Shirlingon is good -- and I love the seared tuna salad at Carlyle Grill, also in Shirlington. Bangkok 54 for Thai on Columbia Pike. Del Merei Grill -- YUM! -- in Del Ray, also Firefly and Taqueria Poblano. There's a fabulous thai restaurant on Colmubia Pike -- a small place -- but to kill me, I can't remember the name. Not quire Arlington, but Four Sisters for Vietnames (7 corners) and Duangrats (Rt. 7).

Yeah, cheddar dos certainly sound odd, but I thought I'd add that I had some just in case someone had been successfully inventive at some point.

Squash Blossoms

I just got back from the farmers' market where I scored some squash blossoms. I plan to fry them, but have never tried stuffing them. I also picked up some cheddar and feta cheeses. Can I stuff them with Feta, you think? Any other thoughts?

1. 2 Amy's
2. Four Sisters (echoing the Eden Center thing)
3. Bistro Du Coin
4. Matchbox
5. Restaurant Eve (followed by desert at Buzz, it's on Slater's Lane)

Swordish tonight -- dry grill?

I've never cooked Swordfish, specifically, at home. I just picked some up. How would you suggest preparing? Would salt, pepper, lemon cut it. Perhaps make a balsamic-based drizzle. I'm hoping for something relatively simple.
