Ice cream in Venice

I really liked Ca D'oro in Canareggio on my last visit 2 years ago but I am not a gelato fanatic and it was nearby for us. There is a GROM at Campo San BArnaba.

Many people like Nico on the Zattere...
The gelato at Vizio Virtu is amazing with unique flavors but a limited selection.

But, I haven't been in Venice in 2 years.

Settimio al Pelligrino and more from Rome

Yes sorry for the confusion-- It's not AL Pistoia--just Osteria Pistoia. I asked the question there about being a Tuscan place and he told me no--they mean to be a real Roman place.

Ken got a plate of pasta Amatriciana which was wonderful if quirky by using the large "rotelle pazze" and I asked for a cooked vegetable plate which they made for me.

Settimio al Pelligrino and more from Rome

In Rome now! We went to Settimio tonight at 8:30, the earliest possible time. We were walking by at around 8:00 and stopped in to make a reservation. They were almost but not totally full by 9.

We absolutely loved our meal! Started with the gnocchi (it's Thursday, after all) with a perfect amount of rich pomodoro sauce. I loved how you could really taste the potatoes in the gnocchi; they were not "light as a feather" but substantial without being heavy. We followed with stuffed roast veal, stuffed with hard boiled egg and a little prosciutto. Two small slices were perfection -- delicious and tender. The cauliflower was soft, salty and yummy. We had the Mont Blanc for dessert. I had never tried it before--although super sweet it made the perfect finish to our meal.

I loved this place for its authentic trattoria style, friendly service and fabulous food!

Thanks to all who recommended it.

We ate a few nights ago at a new place called Osteria al Pistoia on via rinacimento and enjoyed it very much. Chalk board menu. wines by the glass. chatty, english speaking staff. They said they'd only been open a few weeks. While it had nothing of the heart and soul of Settimio, this place is worth a try.

We alslo had Porchetta panini from the truck in Campo dei Fiori which were fantastic. For my money, there is no better lunch!

I will continue to report...

one week ouside Montepulciano

Is A Gambe di Gatto open for lunch?
thanks

Venice

The Casa Parmigiano located right in the Rialto Market area is a good place to get cheeses.
Not sure if they're open Sunday and Monday though.

Last leg of FOOD TRIP in Northern Italy

Il Gatto e La Volpe requires reservations well in advance. In June of 2010, I called about a week out and they were full for the one night we were staying nearby.

Artichokes in Italy

How long does the season usually last. I won't arrive in Rome until May 22. Will I still see them in the markets? Restaurants?

Grazie.

I loved the use of commando in this sense, off your own bat.
Using crossover terms in this way makes for interesting culinary writing.

What are a cook's best sources for ingredients in Rome?

Errors aside (and I, for one, hope that others chime in with corrections) I really appreciate the list you mad missy.
I will not be in Rome May but I am constantly cutting and pasting info. Your list really helps. I also plan to do a fair amount of apartment cooking.

thanks!

Thanks for the report. I've been wondering???

First Stop Venice

La Zucca would not be very convenient. Maybe you should try the Cavatappi wine bar in San Marco. It would be close and casual.
La Cantina, La bitta and Orto dei Mori would top my list. And they would take you to 3 very different areas of the city. You could combine Orto dei Mori with your Jewish Ghetto stroll.
Like livingvenice said--you may have to stay longer!

Need Italian Cookbook recommendation

I, very enthusiastically recommend Marcella Hazan's "Essentials".
If you want a virtual taste of her recipes check out this blog:
http://www.slowtrav.com/blog/pomodori_e_vino/

I was one of 9 cooks who cooked the whole book and posted, daily, in the Pomodori e Vino blog. We were lucky enough to have Marcella follow along and comment regularly on the posts.

It 's great reading.

foodies in Italy, where to go?

After several trips to bella Italia I have a slight preference for Piemonte over ER. That being said, I think you will love your itinerary. Parma is a real gem. I have to agree about the food in Bologna restaurants being over rated but that is not the case, IMHO, in Parma or Ferrara. Trattoria Tribunale in Parma is highly recommended.

Keep Piemonte in mind for your next visit. The thing about Italy...You will be back.

Try "V"-- just the other side of Seaside from Grayton, on 30A. I don't recommend Fish out of Water.

Wine shops in Venice

We had very good and enjoyable experiences at Mille vini. Lorenzo seemed to understand our price point and made some really nice recs. Returning for the second time, we got a little sconto for being regulars. And we got nice attention even though there was a guy in there, at the same time, buying suit cases of high end wines.

Anything new and exciting on Highway 30-A near Rosemary Beach/Seaside/Destin?

V on 30A, in Seagrove has a fantastic, airy, modern design with an open kitchen. The menu has lots of seafood and a short ribs dish and even chicken and waffles. We enjoyed all of our food tilefish, redfish, arugala salad, scallop and beet app. Some dishes were better than others and the desserts were outstanding--we had a key lime frozen pie and a blue berry shortcake. I found the wine list really thoughtful at many price points.
They really just opened, about 4 months ago, but I think there's lots of potential there.

Dining recs in Trentino/Alto Adige?

I forgot to add the link to this blog: (it's not mine)

I found it looking for places for our last Trento visit. Great read and photos!

Dining recs in Trentino/Alto Adige?

I spent 3 nights in Trento and Tre Garofani was our favorite place. Here's a little cut/paste from my blog :
We went for dinner at Tre Garofani. Wow! It was a fabulous meal. We started with complementary local sparkling wine—dry, not at all like prosecco, refreshing. Then we got a little square of homemade bread with wild boar pate and a tiny salad. It tasted like chopped liver—we all loved it. I had a wild boar appetizer. Small chunks of the delicious, tender meat with a very faint curry flavor to the sauce beside a “tower” of a foamy red pepper cream with small discs—like soft crackers. We drank a local Traminer from Maso Bastie. Its flowery perfume changed with each course. Ken and Pat shared an app of asparagus flan, smoked duck breast and salad. Bob had a chicken dish stuffed with zucchini and onions. He said the vegetable were great because he didn’t know he was eating them. For my next dish I had to try the local specialty canederli. They are described as dumplings but to me they seemed like balls of very tasty poultry stuffing. I was really glad to try this dish but really was too heavy for a steady diet. Ken had fabulous lamb chops with fennel and peppers. Pat had a house made tagliatelle with favas and guinea fowl. For dessert we all shared a “strawberry salad” (sliced strawberries) bursting with flavor and a zabione sauce. As we were leaving Ken was saying how we should reserve o come back on Thurs. night. It was the restaurant experience Italy dreams are made of: Enthusiastic owner out front, wife doing the cooking, beautiful rooms, linens, heavy wood tables, art on the homey walls.

And:
we went to the Osteria Scrigno del Duomo from the Slow Food Book. We really enjoyed the lunch. I had a vegetable terrine with fresh ricotta inside and chopped walnuts on top, and a small side salad. Like so many dishes, here in Italy, the olive oil really took it to the next level. Ken had tagliolini with a red pepper sauce and speck. The homemade pasta was bright yellow, the rich orange sauce was in a pool under it and it was topped with small pieces of the speck, which had been cooked to a crispy bacon-like state. I had a glass of Trento DOC sparkling wine and Ken had a Forst beer. It was a great lunch on a small patio with beautiful views onto the piazza and the duomo tower:

Next summer we will be spending 3 or 4 nights in the Dolomites so this thread is of great interest to me.

Creative food in Tallahasee, anything better than Cypress for dinner?

Lunch at Mockingbird yesterday was pretty good.
Chicken salad plate--nice fresh veggies, olives, dill in the chicken salad.
Great portabello mushroom sandwich! And really good ice tea.

can't ask for more...

Allergic to Seafood in Genoa

It's been about 3 years but we had a truly fabulous and obviously memorable meal, at Enoteca Infernotto (via macaggi, 64, tel 0105703250). The meal included a wonderful salumi platter and bright green pesto. Take the wine advice from the host--the pairings were just great!

We ate twice at Da Maria since it was about a block from our hotel and it was just OK. I think of it as Ligurian diner food--definitely worth a visit and inexpensive but nothing sensational.

tallahassee tonight 1-4-09! -- best thai "see yu" or "kee mao" noodles?

Just an FYI post.
There is a Korean Bar B Que place on West Tennessee--near TCC.
The food is really good--served in styrofoam though.
Some is Japanese and some Korean. Not too too spicy.

I need a best restaurant list for Venice 2011- Splurge for 3 days

In addition to the great list of Venetian seafood in a previous post, look for razor clams--I think they're called capelonghe but not quite sure. They are sweet and delicious. Last May they were on the menu at Boccoduro and Allle Testiere.

Also, don't forget to reserve your table. Many of the places you are interested in get totally full--especially Alle Testiere and Fiaschetteria Toascana.
