Recommendations for 1st Visit to Dallas/Ft. Worth in July
Where are you visiting from? That might help steer our suggestions for a higher end place towards something not as common in your area.
For barbecue, I'd recommend Pecan Lodge at the Dallas Farmers Market. I also second the recommendation for Off-Site Kitchen although the only downside is it's mostly outside seating and you are visiting in one of our hottest months. Right now they are only open for lunch. There is some shade on the back patio but it's just something to keep in mind in case you are like me and melt in the sun. One of my favorite burgers is at Bolsa, served only at lunch I believe.
In general for upscale, some of my favorite places are Local, Stephan Pyles and Hibiscus.
Where else to buy coppa (hot coppa) in DFW metro OTHER than Jimmy's?
I haven't had it myself, but Alongi's Italian Market's website states they carry it. They are located in Flower Mound and their website is www.italianmarketanddeli.com. (Click on "Food Menu" and they list all the deli meats they carry.)
Mesa (Dallas) Review
I'm going to chime in too and say this is one amazing restaurant. We have been twice and have enjoyed everything we have tried so far! We have had picadas de Veracruz, the mole with the duck leg, the snapper Veracruzana, the pork ribs with adobo sauce and the oxtail. All were delicious.
Their cocktails are really impressive too (jamaica paloma, spiked horchata, fresh fruit mojitos) and the service is great. I'm looking forward to going back and trying out some more of the menu, especially the ceviche.
Cake Balls
They do have cake balls and they are amazing. Their selection varies though and sometimes they run out. They are so moist and delicious. My favorites are chocolate with vanilla cake and red velvet. They will typically only have 2-3 flavors at a time.
I've also had ones from the Cake Ball Company and they are very good but Creme de la Cookie is more convenient plus I also like a number of their other baked goods.
24 Hours to (and in) Ft. Worth
I would go to Love Shack over Kincaid's. And I totally agree with amokscience.....definitely wait until you get to the Hill Country for barbecue. I like Angelo's but it just can't compare.
I haven't been to Joe T's but I have been to La Familia and liked it a lot, the food was good and it has a nice atmosphere. Esperanza's is a good choice for breakfast. I also like Lonesome Dove in the Stockyards.
I also agree you should try to go to the Modern, which is right across from the Kimball, if you have any interest in modern art. They have a pretty impressive collection.
My stops along 35 south are barbecue....either Rudy's (I like the one in Round Rock the best) or Schoepf's in Belton. I haven't found a lot of good non-chain restaurants along the way.

New to Dallas. Comment & Questions....
I am a native New Yorker and while not Italian, I love Italian food. For me, Jimmy's is a taste of home. Their homemade sausage is awesome and their meatball parm sub is one of my favorite sandwiches in Dallas. Definitely worth checking out!
recommendations near the ballpark in arlington.
Potager is really good. There's a daily menu so check out their website beforehand. It will definitely be a unique experience! It's pay what you wish and the focus is on organic, local foods. It's the only place I know in Arlington itself, hopefully you'll get a few other recs nearby.
Not sure what kind of cuisine you're interested in but if you don't mind driving a little, another
recommendation is Lonesome Dove Bistro near the Fort Worth Stockyards. Its open for lunch and dinner. You will definitely feel like you're in Texas in the Stockyards area! If you wanted something a little more casual, there's Love Shack for burgers, also in the Stockyards. Both are owned by chef Tim Love.

In Addison: is it possible to get great brisket tacos without going all the way to Mia's?
This is probably too late, but I think the rest of the menu is just okay, nothing special. I haven't had the chile rellenos.
I have also been to Mena's and it's good too but a bit further away if you're cabbing it.
In Addison: is it possible to get great brisket tacos without going all the way to Mia's?
I agree with the Manny's rec. Their brisket tacos won't be as good as Mia's but they are pretty tasty and the best I can think of in Addison. It's on Midway just a little south of Belt Line.
Hi from Toronto...need a few high end options (maybe one cheap eats) for Thursday night
My suggestions for the business dinner would be Fearings, Stephan Pyles or Abacus, with Fearings being within walking distance.

Chicken and Waffles
They might be talking about JoJo's on West Illinois in Oak Cliff. I haven't been though so I can't give an opinion on the food.
If you are open to going to another place, I'd recommend Hattie's, also in Oak Cliff. They have chicken and waffles at brunch and they are quite tasty.
Help finding the right restaurant
I agree with the Cafe R & D rec and would add Hibiscus. Hibiscus is cozy and unpretentious to me and the food is quite tasty. I think both would give her some new things to try but still be friendly to her palate.
I think she would enjoy Tillman's as well but that might be too much of a drive to Oak Cliff. They haven't opened one up in Allen yet (that would be very convenient for me!).

Solo diner, late dinner near Galleria
Maximo is pretty good Mexican and you can walk there from the Galleria, it's in the plaza at the corner of Noel & Alpha. Go Fish Ocean Club is in the same plaza although their entrees are more in the $28-35 range.
My favorite restaurant in the area is Kenny's Wood Fired Grill, about a 5 min. cab ride away in a strip mall a the SW corner of Belt Line & the Tollway.
(Best) XLB in Dallas?
I like the XLB at Yao Fuzi in Plano. They are smaller than the ones I've had in New York but the broth is pretty tasty.
Favorite LOCAL Restaurants
Chitos in Plano, Casa Milagro in Richardson, Casa Vieja in Carrollton, the Fish Shack in Plano, Kenny's Burger Joint in Frisco. I also like the Greek Isles in Plano, it's not the best Greek I've had but it's pretty tasty. And if you like German food, I'd recommend the Bavarian Grill in the same shopping plaza.

Japanese grocery stores near Lake Highlands?
It's not in your area but Shop Minoya at 3115 West Parker in Plano, about a 30 minute drive, would be your best bet. They only carry Japanese items and have things you can't find anywhere else. Thera also Asia World Market at 240 Legacy Drive in Plano and Super H Mart at 2625 Old Denton Road in Carrollton.
Tonight in Ft Worth - Tex Mex or Burger recs required
Love Shack has pretty good burgers. There's one at the Stockyards and another in the So7 development not too far from the Modern.
From Old Mexico?
I love El Tizoncito. The al Pastor tacos are delicious as are the bistec con queso. Even the grilled onions with lime and salt are so tasty. The only thing is I wish it was closer!
Recommendations for the Farmers Branch area?
Two of my favorites in nearby Carrollton are Carribean Cafe (Cuban) on Webb Chapel near Belt Line and Casa Vieja (Columbian) in the shopping plaza on the northeast corner of Belt Line & Josey. Also, don't know how far into Farmers Branch you are, but Kenny's Wood Fire Grill in Addison on Belt Line near the Tollway is quite good.
Also in Carrollton is Babe's Chicken House in the town square. If you like fried chicken, you should definitely check it out.

DFW - Taqueria El Fuego - DFW
Taqueria El Fuego has expanded their hours and they are now open Monday through Friday from 6 am to 9 pm and Saturdays from 8 am to 9 pm. I found out about this restaurant from the board some time ago but have never been able to go for dinner until last night because they would be closed . Usually I go there almost every Saturday for their breakfast burritos (which are really like tacos).
We were the only ones in there which is a shame because their food is so good. I decided to get the Tampiquena plate which came with a mini quesadilla and an enchilada along with a plate of rice and beans. The steak was very thin, seasoned well (although they were a little heavy on the pepper) and huge. It was hanging off the plate! It was quite tasty. The quesadilla, just Monterrey cheese and corn tortilla, was delicious. I will have to have an order of those next time I go! I couldn't even get to the rice and beans as I was so full. My boyfriend had the enchilada trio which he enjoyed as well. My dinner was a good deal for $12.99, two people could easily split it.
Just wanted to share their new hours and say I am so glad I found out about this place from you guys...it's fantastic!
Alo Dallas -- Closed for good?
I attended a mojito class at La Duni last month and Taco Borga spoke about Alo. Apparently, they have been going back and forth with the insurance company and that's been the hold up. If I recall correctly, he said they are going to add some of the dishes and the drinks to the menu at the McKinney location in the meantime.
Columbian Food
I really like Casa Vieja, which is in the big shopping plaza at Josey & Belt Line. It's family run and the food is delicious, especially the empanadas, the bandeja paisa, the chicken milanesa.... Really, you can't go wrong with pretty much any choice on the menu. I think most of the main dishes are under $15. They have salsa music on Saturday nights which is a lot of fun.
The one thing I will say is the service is on the slow side, which doesn't bother me, but if you needed a quick dinner this probably wouldn't be a good choice.
restaurant recs for sept visit ?
I would pick Abacus and my other recommendations would be Local or Stephan Pyles. I haven't been to Shinsei yet but it's on my list.
DFW- Anyone seen Local's Restaurant Week menu?
I could be wrong about it being called a roasted chicken on the menu but it is more of a fried chicken. It's a breast and my boyfriend said it tasted like it was fried in a sweet potato batter. It looked pretty tasty...in fact, he said he could have it again tonight for dinner.
DFW- Anyone seen Local's Restaurant Week menu?
I did not do the wine pairings but they did have one. Their "champagne drink" is one of my favorite cocktails so it's hard for me to order anything else!
DFW- Anyone seen Local's Restaurant Week menu?
I went tonight and had quite a delicious and enjoyable meal. I was there with three other people. I can't remember all of the exact details, but here is what I remember:
First Course
--Texas corn soup
--Heirloom tomato salad with baby arugula, blue cheese & fennel
--French cow's milk cheese and mushroom dish, it was served like a salad
Main
--Wild Alaskan halibut with fresh corn
--Beef tenderloin with an onion risotto
--Roasted chicken with mashed potatoes
Dessert
--Devil's Food Chocolate Cake with ice cream
--Banana pudding
--Warm peach tart with ice cream
4th Course
--Foie Gras
--Lobster with romaine hearts and parmesan (basically to me this was a Caesar salad with lobster)
--The onion risotto that is paired with the beef tenderloin
I had the heirloom salad, the beef tenderloin, the chocolate cake and opted for the 4th course and had the lobster dish, which was served first. I really liked everything. The beef tenderloin was perfectly cooked and the onion risotto was delicious. The halibut looked great and my boyfriend had the roasted chicken, which he said was a little spicy but good. He loved the mashed potatoes. The chocolate cake was quite a surprise because I wasn't expecting much...it was rich but light and the ice cream in a cone was a great pairing.
My only complaint is it took about 40 minutes to get our first course. The table next to us waited quite a bit for their dessert. Once we got the first course, the rest of the courses arrived at a typical pace for the restaurant. I like having time between courses so it wasn't a big deal but our reservation was at 8 so by the time the first course arrived, I was quite hungry. Just something to keep in mind. But the service overall was quite good. And I think unlike other restaurants, they are only serving the RW menu, we were not given the regular menu.
First trip to Dallas......
For Mexican, I would recommend Cafe San Miguel on Henderson in Dallas or El Ranchito in Oak Cliff. For Tex-Mex (and a little closer), I thnk Casa Milagro is pretty good...it's on the northeast corner of Campbell & Plano Road, not too far from your hotel.
Also, for breakfast or lunch, you might want to try Taqueria El Fuego, which is on the opposite corner of Plano Rd. & Campbell in the shopping plaza just past the Texaco station. Their breakfast burritos (which are really the size of tacos) are delicious as are their salsas. They have a pretty good lunch selection.
French Macaron's in Dallas?
Central Market, at least the one in Plano, now carries them. They have six flavors: lemon, raspberry, chocolate, mocha, pistachio and vanilla. I didn't care too much for the chocolate but the other flavors were pretty good.
