Interesting wine by the glass... options

The best wine deal in Philadelphia has to be Friday, Saturday, Sunday. The list is awsome and only $10 per bottle over cost. They have St Damien Gigondas Souteyrades 2007 (rated 98 points by Parker - WA) for $43 (or close to it) dollars!! That the cost of a few glasses of Schloky wine. Agree that Fork has a great wine list too.

Restaurants / PA LCB / distributors – how does this work?

how does that work? Can anyone pick up and deliver on the request of the Restaurant? Do you know the name of the company that delivers? thanks

Restaurants / PA LCB / distributors – how does this work?

he doesn't need a "Distributor" for that? I thought all wines (except "limited wineries", as Bigley9 pointed out). I guess that would eat in to your profits though

Restaurants / PA LCB / distributors – how does this work?

Some restaurants pick up their own wine and spirits at a local LCB store, while others seem to have it delivered (or is that only SLO wine orders?). Do distributors deliver to the restaurants or does a third party deliver? Can all products be delivered or only SLO wines? Are there special LCB outlets for restaurants only where they can pick up their products? I’m trying to get my mind around this. Anyone out there understand these procedures?

Becca's Restaurant

To me, Becca’s is terrible. I suppose if you liked Twin Bays, you’ll like this place. I hold local places like Alba and Birchrunville as a BYO benchmark. The staff is the same (kept of from Twin Bays) and the menu is way over reaching. Look for yourself. Any small place that will list so many options on the menu can’t be doing it right. To me it’s an amateur operation. Consequently, you’ll see no C.Laban review for this place.

Open restaurants in LBI this weekend?

thanks and enjoy the weekend. we'll wing it tonight and I'll be grilling some "leaping frog" chicken thighs. They are marinating now. it's an awsome south american thing we found in one of the food rags. take care

Open restaurants in LBI this weekend?

Thanks for that. What's the story with Plate? i've not been and they have no web site. do you like it?

Open restaurants in LBI this weekend?

Anyone have any recommendations? Seems nearly everything is closed for the season. prefer BYO, but at this point, i'll take anything. Prefer near LLadies, but will travel this time of year.

Anyone tried Daddy Mimms' Creole in Phoenixville?

WOW - I guess I had the only bad meal there then. when I consider the quality of the food, MAYBE it could be better on another night. that said, there's no way it is as great as some of you make it out to be. Let's face it, it will never be reviewed by Laban or the like b/c it simply is not that interesting (not unlike neighbors Black Lab and marly's).
As to ericinpville - Cajun food includes many braised dishes (especially considering its French roots). It is a weak statement that we ordered the wrong dish. In your glowing review (terrific, perfect, great, etc.), your argument lacks any details or specifics on what made the experience good. I have complemented many places on this board, so I had no aganda to bash Mims - our food that night really was awful for the reason that I detailed. But hey - that's me. Please post if anyone has the Pizza

Anyone tried Daddy Mimms' Creole in Phoenixville?

Went to Daddy Mims last night. it was a horrific experience. My wife had the short ribs. It was like they finished the sauce with a huge bottle of soy sauce or just a giant scoop of salt. It looked great and the meat was tender, but so salty it was completely uneatable. I couldn't even bring the leftovers for the dog. I had jumbalaya that more closly resembled rice-a-roni. The duck was so dryed out. In fact the whole mess was really dry and some clown went to town with ceyanne in an effort to "kick it up a notch". My ceaser was fine to start, but we ended it after the entre's and beat feet for home.

Oh No - Majolica is closing on Sat!

I read this. how does the bad economy "shaken the BYOB business model"? Seems to me, it would attract more business. Unless he means byo owners don't have deep pockets to keep up their business. It certainly takes more cash to run an operation with a bar.

Oh No - Majolica is closing on Sat!

Majolica is NOT closing. They are moving and will annouce the new plans next week. This is confirmed by display in the window of the now closed location. No surprise. They really needed to retool their operation.

Funky Lil Kitchen

I like FlK. It's very good. We drive there from Pville several times a year. Chef seems to really like using local food supplies, so I find that the better meals are during the growing season. Menu is limited, but always seems to have something in each catagory. I like the atmosphere. We always recommend it to friends.

Phoenixville

Thanks Lola. Was thinking about going there this past Saturday, but opted for Italian in Paoli (the second san Marco location). It was alright. The place was packed at 6pm and they were turning people away at the door. Lots of families and retirees. It ended up about $100, but half of that was wine. there is no cheap Italian places anymore. Anyway, I'll stop in Canullis on a weeknight and give it a try.

Phoenixville

has anyone been to Cannuli's in Pville? I can't find any info online.

Friday Saturday Sunday

my wife and I went there last night too. We were the first there at 5:30. That place is so dependable and the the service is always very plesent. wine prices are so fair, you don't need byo's with prices / selection that they have.

West Chester dinner recs

Hi C,
Honestly, I don't know who they are. there web site provided the bio's on them, but I don't think it was anything that stands out.
I too have always liked the Oyster Bar (oops showing my age), 4 dogs as a great place to drink, but MI is nice when the music get's too loud at the 4 dogs. MI is totally a fall/ winter bar. I'm born and raised in the area, so have a soft spot for old chester couny stone / HW floors bars with candles. To me, they have so much more character, just not many places like that around.
As for wine list, I spend most of my time in byo's b/c I'm a long time collector. You are right though. In the city, the typical $15 wine is $50, so it's bad all over.
In fact, I think I just decided I'm going there tonight - if it's bad, I'll let you know.

Phoenixville

Hey Kate,
I understand where you are coming from and it's simply a matter of taste. We prepare our pot roast a bit differently:) Have you been to Kimberton Station? When you talk about value, I think there's no comparison between the two places. Although, to be fair KS is BYOB. I've heard others say they leave Bville hungry (some very good friends). I have not, Some of the sides they put out on the entrees are kind of a joke. I'm on my third set of owners there and to me it's always been a place to really relax and drink and eat and yak...you know what I mean.

West Chester dinner recs

OK - I understand you being skeptical on Marshallton Inn. I grew up in the WC area and the only thing I would ever do at MI is drink. The food has ALWAYS been awful. Honestly though, I've been very inpressed by the quality of food the new owners have been putting out. And it's taken them awhile to hit their stride since taking over, but for me it's been working. Look, the bar there is awsome right? go out for a few drinks and try a few apps or share a meal and see for yourself. I want to be clear, this is solid, dependable stuff. Very simple in prep. Not anything that is overcomplicated. Recently had braised duck risotto (it was loaded with duck) and a blue cheese braised short rib fondue with arugula and crispy baguette (app) and it was great (it was a excellent blue with really deep flavors - french). The atmosphere helps too, especially this time of year.

West Chester dinner recs

do yourself (and husband) a big fat favor and go to Marshallton inn (just 10+ minutes outside of town). After a few years of ownership the husband / wife team has got the their act together and the (french influence) food / atmosphere is now the place to beat in the immediate WC area. go to their web site and see for yourself. I think gilmore and butterfish are average. Nothing special about going there. Do that on a week night when you have nothing else to do.

Phoenixville

I ate at Pickering Creek on monday and watched the Phillies game. additionally, I had the pot roast and thought it was extremly bland. Pot roast is supposed to be slow food and the prep was all wrong. The vegi's were not cooked in the "gravy", they were added at the end. The meat was tender enough and was cooked slowly, but yeilded little flavor. Their servers don't understand anything about the food or the draft beer at the bar, but it's Phoenixville and good help is hard to find. Burger was ok the previous week, but served on a cold roll. Why wouldn't you toast the thing before serving it up?
I live in this town and the only place worth the effort is Majolica. All the talk of the "restaurant scene" is a joke. They are nothing more than a collection of bars that serve average food (and no so cheap prices). Even Black Lab is serving up expensive meals. You used to be able to get something decent for under $20 an entree. For a few bucks more you can eat at Majolica, Birchrunville, Blackfish or Alba - all are winners.
as far as a good deal on food in Pville area - go to Kimberton Station (located right accross from kimberton Inn). That's good food at a decect price and it's byob

Philly Beer Week

The beer tasting at the UnivofPenn Archeology museum is great. Tix might be sold out. This is not one of those mayhem beer tastings. Beer drinking is very civilized amongst the mummies in the museum. Of course, this year will be w/o Michael Jackson, but the show must go on.

Nice restaurant for after the opera

glad you liked my recommendation. we went to the opera that day as well. however, we went to monks before hand, which was, well, monks! anyway, the show ended up being pretty good (but LONG!)- I liked it, but caught myself nodding a few times in the first 45 minutes. That's what tossing beer and frites will to to you before the show!

Osteria - Amazing Valentine's Dinner

The place is good - not that good. What really kills me is how they went away from their initial wine list, which had a handful of decent selection for $30-45 range. my guess is you can get that $100 bottle at the lcb for low to mid $20's. My last visit (2 weeks ago), I got a $60 super tuscan, which was fair at the very beat. This sells for $14.50. I never get out of that resaurant for under $100 per person. In the end, it's steep for what they deliver

Nice restaurant for after the opera

brasserie Perrier is BYOB on sunday nights. The food is always dependable. considering you can purchase their standard bottle of $60 wine for about $16 in a decent wine shop, it makes it a nice call. leave the wine in the car and grab it after the show

La Boheme - new owners - anyone been there?

I went. Not very good. Found out the new owners are Caribou cafe. for me, that explained it. at least I was able to have an unreal leitz! servers had no idea what's going on. It's like they recruited them right off the street.

seargantsville inn, nj

my girl and i ate there before christmas and stayed nearby at the woolverton inn (which is awsome). My filet was just ok. she had the duck, which was really nice. both starters were very good as well (sorry, forget details). wine prices are decent. Selections are standard, but you can find something. Ask for a table next to the fire place. It's got a great atmosphere, although the indoor/outdoor carpeting should be removed for hardwood floors. I like it there. next time we are going to the stockton inn, which is only a few miles from there. We'll see how that goes. Same type of place

La Boheme - new owners - anyone been there?

just made reservations...was curious is anyone has been there. They said, the liquor license comes in 10 days and they are new owners that retained the name.
