Is there any source for Kishka made with beef intestine?
Your description takes me back to my mother's kishka, the best I've ever had. That was in Chicago. Can't find anything to compare here in Los Angeles.
PRIME RIB
Thanks all for your replies. I appreciate your very helpful reviews and suggestions.
TAM O'SHANTER
Has anyone been to Tam O'Shanter on Las Feliz Blvd. recently? How was it?
Carne Asada Burrito or Taco in Los Angeles
If Alegria on Sunset does with beef what they do with pork, the carne asada must be great and the burritos are BIG.\
There is a place in East L. A. that has the biggest burrito's I've ever heard of but I can't think of the name. I'm sure someone out there can give you details.
PRIME RIB
Crossed my mind. Too far and VERY expensive. Thanks to everyone who replied. It will be Tam O'Shanter.
PRIME RIB
Depending on the cut of prime rib, Lawry's charges $35 - $53. Tam O'Shanter, owned by the same company, charges $$27 - $37. I'd rather go to Tam O'Shanter.
Carne Asada Burrito or Taco in Los Angeles
Alegria, 3510 Sunset Blvd. Great food. Give it a try.
Any good Mexican food in Silver Lake?
Alegria on Sunset, 3510 Sunset. Owner/chef. Friendly, very good service. Strip mall parking. Food is absolutely great. I love the carnitas tacos and burrito. Excellent menu.
PRIME RIB
In the city of Los Angeles, what restaurant has great prime rib at a reasonable price?
Pressed Almond Duck
That sounds like what I had, but I'm so curious and hungry for pressed duck, that I either have to go to Chicago or downtown L. A. which is 4 hours closer. Afterwards, I'll write and let you know how it was this time around.
Pressed Almond Duck
You're right. What I had that time was similar to chunks of something mysterious covered in sawdust. I'll certainly order the Almond Duck next time. Thanks for the info.
Pressed Almond Duck
So good to read this blog again about pressed duck. I went to Paul's Kitchen a few years ago and didn't care for it but after reading your comments, my mouth is watering and I have to try my luck a 2nd time. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. I'm from Chicago and always looking for the great Chinese food I remember.

Chinatown.. need new place
I loved J.R. Seafood in W. L.A. and went regularly. It was always crowded, but 1 day it was empty. We asked the mgr. or waiter who said the owner had gambling debts and couldn't keep up the restaurant. I loved the dim sum at J. R.'s and look forward to JR Bistro. It must be less expensive for the owner in Chinatown.
Australians please Help! ISO : a butcher that has Pork Loin with the skin on/crackling
I've seen the roast pork on TV that you're talking about. Nigella Lawson made it. I've tried finding it too with no luck. I've also asked butcher's who didn't understand either. I thought it was a loin and just looked at Nigella's website. There is a recipe for pork shoulder or butt, but no photo so I don't know if it's the roast I saw her make. I look forward to seeing the replies you receive.
The best steamed dumplings around downtown LA?
CBS Seafood, 700 N. Spring St., Chinatown has a large variety of very good dim sum including har gow.
Best Milkshakes
MILK, 7290 Beverly Blvd., L. A. So far I've only had the Coffee Toffee Crunch Shake, Triple chocolate Shake and The MILKIE Way Malt and they're all to die for... also, the Cafe Mocha. They go great with the Pressed Sandwiches.
Bagels in LA?
Label's Table, 9226 W. Pico Blvd., L. A. I've been to many places for bagels and this is my favorite. I love the Everything bagels, and their rye bread is the best.
NY Style Chinese food in LA?
I'm from Chicago and also long for the Chinese food I remember like Pressed Duck that I can't find in L. A., but is still on Chicago Chinatown menu's.
The best Pork Won Ton Soup I've had In L. A. is at Red Corner Asia, 5267 Hollywood Blvd., L. A. (www.redcornerasia.com) The soup comes with thin egg noodles, minced pork, bbq pork and vegetables. It's delicious and fulfills 1 of my needs.
BUCKWHEAT PANCAKES
Does anyone know where to find buckwheat pancakes? In L. A., Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Westwood? Thank you.
Best pastrami in L.A.
Langer's is consistently outstanding... EVERY time. Went to Junior's on Westwood Blvd. recently and the pastrami was delicious, but someone told a friend that it's hit and miss with the pastrami.
Chicken: Where to you buy it?
Puritan Poultry in Farmer's Market at 3rd and Fairfax.
Fresh and plump.
Best butcher to buy a prime rib
Huntington's Meat at Farmer's Market, 3rd and Fairfax. Every bit as good as Superior was.
Fisherman's Outlet Seafood Downtown
I've been there many times. If you can get there early, 11:00ish, you have a better chance of not having to stand in line too long. Lines can be very long. Once the person in line in front of my SO had 17 take-out orders to place. Go with someone who can claim a table while you're in line.
Food is very fresh, made to order. Our favorites... fish platter which is fried Pollock, fries and cole slaw. Or giant shrimp with garlic butter, fries and cole slaw. Bay scallops with fries and cole slaw. Tartar and cocktail sauces are delicious. Everything is! Combo plates, lobster tails, salmon, etc.
Very big menu. Everything is deep fried or charbroiled. There are chowders, salads, seafood cocktails, sides, beer, wine, sodas, desserts.
They have their own parking lot and street parking isn't bad. They also have a seafood market. You'll see people from every walk of life. It's a great place. Highly recommended.
Zankou. Downhill fast AND they changed the garlic paste!!!
I was in Zankou on Sepulveda not long ago and took a menu. The Hollywood location isn't on there, so they must be out of the chain but the Zankou sign is still up.
Best Chinese Restaurant in Chinatown
I can't answer your question, but to put in my 2cents worth, I think CBS Seafood at 700 N. Spring St. is the best restaurant I've been in, in Chinatown and I've been to many. CBS has delicious dim sum until 2:00 P. M. and everything we've had there is good. There is a big take-out deli adjacent and they have their own big, free parking lot.
Golden Bird (at Porky's) vs. Honey's Kettle
Honey's Kettle is at 9537 Culver Blvd. in Culver City.
I was there Wed. for the 5th or 6th time. I've had breasts and wings and they've always been moist and crunchy. Don't care for the fries. I ordered wings for there and to bring home and re-heat and they were very good. I like their cole slaw and chocolate malts too.
No matter what time of day I've been there, it's never been very crowded and the wait is usually 10-15 min. I like Honey's Kettle and can't complain except that Wed. they were out of napkins.
REAL indian food in LA
Surya India, 8048 W. 3rd St., L. A.
Chef/owner is from India as well as the employees. Food, service and atmosphere are very good. He also owns Holy Cow down the street near LaCienega.
